  • Texas: Lubbock County 28% increase in hospitalizations from June - July 10th

    July 11, 2020
    Excerpt
In Lubbock County, more residents have needed hospitalization due to COVID-19 in the first two weeks of July than they did in the entire month of June.

Data from the City of Lubbock shows a 28 percent increase of hospitalized patients from June, which was 617, to July 10 when the number of patients rose to 795. The increase comes from a dramatic spike in new coronavirus cases that began in mid-June and is now reaching triple digits.

As of Friday, there were 88 residents hospitalized from the virus, and 39 were in an intensive care unit. Rhyne said most of the patients in the ICU have other conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, that have made them more vulnerable.

“Probably 25 percent need the assistance of a ventilator,” explained Karen Baggerly, Covenant Health’s chief nursing officer.
“Everything is going to depend on whether or not we see the incidents of new cases plateau, or if the cases go up,” said Rhyne. “The patients that are the most desperately ill can receive antiviral therapy as long as we have the supplies to hold out. That may be a very limited set.”

The deaths are mostly happening in the older population, but Baggerly said they have recently seen people in their 30s and 40s who have required hospital treatment.
