RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person has tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Wake County, health officials said Tuesday.

Governor Roy Cooper and the Coronavirus Task Force will host a news conference at 3:30 p.m.

In a news release, Cooper said the patient is currently at home in isolation.

"I know that people are worried about this virus, and I want to assure North Carolinians our state is prepared," Cooper said in a written statement. "Our task force and state agencies are working closely with local health departments, health care providers and others to quickly identify and respond to cases that might occur."

North Carolina Identifies First Case of COVID-19

A North Carolina person has tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The test, conducted by the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health, is presumptively positive and will be confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab. The person is doing well and is in isolation at home.

“I know that people are worried about this virus, and I want to assure North Carolinians our state is prepared,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “Our task force and state agencies are working closely with local health departments, health care providers and others to quickly identify and respond to cases that might occur.”

The North Carolina person from Wake County traveled to the state of Washington and was exposed at a long-term care facility where there is currently a COVID-19 outbreak. Local health department officials are identifying close contacts to monitor symptoms and contain spread. To protect individual privacy, no further information will be released.

While awaiting confirmation of results from the CDC, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will treat presumptive cases as positive and follow CDC guidelines to protect public health and limit the spread of infection.

Today’s announcement represents an isolated case, and COVID-19 is currently not widespread in North Carolina. Because COVID-19 is most commonly spread through respiratory droplets, North Carolinians should take the same measures that healthcare providers recommend annually to prevent the spread of the flu and other viruses, including washing your hands, avoiding touching your face and covering coughs and sneezes.

Last month, Governor Cooper established the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Task Force to support the state’s ongoing effort to monitor, prepare for and respond to COVID-19. State actions include:

• Aggressively pursuing containment strategy of rapid identification, testing and contact tracing.
• Engaging in daily collaboration with federal, state and local partners to ensure rapid response.
• Mobilizing resources for our providers, local public health system, local emergency management and others.
• Developing detailed response plans for multiple sectors for a range of scenarios.
• Developing guidance for planning for multiple sectors for a range of scenarios.
• Preparing health care providers and facilities to streamline and standardize response activities.
• Activating a Joint Information Center to provide timely information.
• Testing patients in the NC State Laboratory of Public Health.
• Leading regular calls with local health departments, hospitals and local emergency management.
• Providing guidelines for health care providers, child care, employers, schools, colleges and universities and others.
• Monitoring residents who have returned from China through local health departments.
• Staffing a COVID-19 phone line to answer urgent questions from the public.
• Maintaining an up-to-date website with information about COVID-19 disease, risk and guidance.

Raleigh, N.C. — The Wake County Department of Health and Human Services has notified a Raleigh restaurant that the person who they said has contracted the COVID-19 virus from this area ate there recently.

North Carolina faces shortage of test kits
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- State officials confirmed Friday night that they have tested 19 people for the coronavirus, with two of them testing positive. Gov. Roy Cooper said he expects the numbers to go up as testing increases.

But he also said more supplies are needed.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) - Five more people in North Carolina have tested positive Monday for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus), bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to seven.

All five of these people traveled to Boston in late February to attend a BioGen conference. Several cases of COVID-19 across the country have been tied to the conference.

These cases are based in Wake County, but are not related to the Wake County individual who tested positive last week. All are in isolation at their respective homes.

NCDHHS Announces Three Additional Cases of COVID-19 in North Carolina

Two people from Forsyth County and a person from Johnston County have tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total of positive cases in North Carolina to 12, including a Durham resident who tested positive in another state. The tests, conducted by the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health, are presumptively positive and will be confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab. All are doing well and are in isolation at home. While awaiting confirmation of results from the CDC, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will treat presumptive cases as positive and follow CDC guidelines to protect public health and limit the spread of infection.

The Forsyth and Johnson County local health departments will work to identify close contacts. The couple from Forsyth was on a cruise where other travelers have tested positive. The exposure for the person from Johnston County is being investigated. The CDC defines close contact as being within approximately 6 feet of a person with an infection with COVID-19 case for a prolonged period of time of 10 minutes or longer. Based on information provided by the individual, county health officials will assess risks of exposure, determine which if any additional measures are needed such as temperature and symptom checks, quarantine and/or testing.

Because COVID-19 is most commonly spread through respiratory droplets, North Carolinians should take the same measures that health care providers recommend to prevent the spread of the flu and other viruses, including washing your hands, avoiding touching your face, staying home if you are sick and covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow.

Camp Lejeune reports its first presumptive positive COVID-19 case

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WNCT)– A Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune dependent tested presumptively positive for COVID-19 at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune.

The patient is receiving treatment in isolation with the patient’s family who has also been in isolation at a home on base due to a high risk of exposure to a known COVID-19 patient outside of the local area.

The test results are pending confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

None of the other family members who were also exposed to the known COVID-19 patient have tested positive for the virus at this time...

Director Gibbie Harris announced three additional cases in Mecklenburg County, bringing the total to 7 in the county. It’s not clear how many, if any, of those numbers were reflected in the state’s 33 positive cases.
