Thousands of NYPD Officers out on Sick Leave, Hundreds Test Positive for Coronavirus

    March 25, 2020
Thousands of New York Police Department (NYPD) officers are on sick leave following a coronavirus outbreak within the force.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea confirmed on Tuesday that approximately 3,200 NYPD officers were out. Of the officers out on sick leave, more than 200 officers — 177 uniformed officers and 34 civilian officers — have tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to the statistics, the number of officers equates to approximately 8% of the entire force.

While local citizens are practicing social distancing to flatten the curve, Shea admits that he is seeing the opposite within the law enforcement agency.

“It’s a trend as you talk about what we’ve seen and what we’re trying to do with social distancing, and lowering the curve what we’re seeing internally as an agency on the frontlines is we are still on an upward climb,” Shea said.

During an interview with “Fox & Friends,” Blue Lives Matter NYC founder Joseph Imperatrice has also weighed in to share details about what life is like for the officers on duty...https://ijr.com/thousands-nypd-offic...avirus-spread/

The number of confirmed NYPD coronavirus cases is expected to spike Monday morning to around 900, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Sunday — as he revealed that more and more cops continue to call out sick.

That’s a jump of 300 cases since Saturday.

“We know that those numbers are going to continually grow,” Shea said of confirmed cases. “We’re looking at both sides of the spectrum, quite frankly: what is the current sick rate as officers are still becoming infected? And when is that beginning to plateau?”

The number of cops out sick Sunday was close to 5,000, or nearly 14 percent of the force, according to the commissioner. That number is up by nearly 800 officers from the day prior...

More Than 1,000 NYPD Officers Have COVID-19

NYPD's Police Chief said more than 6,000 officers called out sick on Wednesday.

Some 1,400 New York Police Department employees have tested positive for COVID-19. Police officers account for more than 1,000 of those confirmed cases.

Police Chief Terence Monahan also said some 6,100 police officers called out sick on Wednesday. That's about 17% of the city's total force. Just the day before, more then 5,000 officers called out sick. Five officers have died from the virus, so far.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has shared his concerns about "essential workers getting scared and not wanting to show up."

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea told CNN Wednesday there have been some NYPD employees that have recovered and returned to work since testing positive for coronavirus, but there are far more calling out....https://www.newsy.com/stories/more-t...have-covid-19/

The number of cases of COVID-19 within the NYPD continues to rise, with over 1,400 members of the force testing positive for the virus as of Wednesday.

Shea spoke to the department's rising COVID-19 cases in an interview with CNN. The cable outlet also reported that nearly 6,200 members of the force, or 17%, were currently out sick, a number Shea did not dispute.
