    Third inmate at Bridgewater facility dies after getting coronavirus

    The Department of Corrections announced that a third inmate at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater died as a result of the coronavirus. It was the third death of an inmate with the coronavirus from the Bridgewater facility within the matter of three days.

    BRIDGEWATER – For the third day in a row, an inmate from the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater died after testing positive for the coronavirus.

    The Department of Corrections released a brief statement about the death on Saturday, which didn’t identify the person who died, but described him as inmate who was in his 60s, who had underlying health conditions and was incarcerated by the state since 2019. His next of kin were notified, prison officials said...

    ...The Department of Corrections said there have been 24 confirmed cases of the coronavirus among inmates in its custody, including 22 at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater alone. The two others were at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Shirley. On top of that, the department said, 15 staff members tested positive for the coronavirus.

    The Department of Corrections also announced on Saturday that it was implementing more health and safety measures in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus at all of its facilities around Massachusetts. The department said that includes stricter limitations on movement within all the facilities, “to allow greater social distancing.” Staff members were instructed to use personal protective equipment if they will be within 6 feet of another person, or in an area with inmates who have tested positive for the virus...
