  • Religious conference attendees may have been exposed to COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- People who attended a religious conference in mid-March may have been exposed to the coronavirus. Individuals who attended the Kansas East Jurisdiction's 2020 Ministers and Workers Conference at the Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ in Kansas City, Kansas from March 16-22, are being warned that the event has been identified as a place of exposure for multiple people in Kansas who have since tested positive for the virus.

Symptoms for COVID-19 can appear anywhere from two to 14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Rarer symptoms include malaise, sore throat and diarrhea.

If you develop any of these symptoms but are not sick enough to seek immediate medical care, you must stay home for at least one week after symptoms started, or for 72 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medication).

If you attended this event and develop symptoms of COVID-19 between 2 and 14 days later, please call your local health department.

            • K-State student recovers from coronavirus

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KSNT) – K-State freshman Kennedy Mounce was given the go-ahead on Sunday that she could leave her house.

Mounce spent two weeks stuck in her home after she was diagnosed with the coronavirus. Mounce says she is glad to be in better health.

“I know that I am nothing short of blessed to have had the minor symptoms that I did and that my immune system fought back and it fought hard,” Mounce said.

She is now continuing her schooling online, at her parents’ home.

As soon as her family found out Mounce had coronavirus, they started taking precautions.

“We jumped in and isolated her from her very first symptom, and I think this story could have been very different had we not done that,” said Kennedy’s mom, Kelli Mounce.

The state’s health department said to follow Mounce’s example and stay at home if you are feeling sick at all.

                          • Stormont Vail slashes employee pay in wake of financial disruptions triggered by COVID-19

Stormont Vail Hospital said Tuesday unprecedented financial disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic prompted salary reductions of 50% for nonessential employees and cuts of 10% to 35% for other staff members.

Robert Kenagy, president and chief executive officer of Stormont Vail Health, said in a memorandum the plan would be implemented on Thursday, April 5. It will be reviewed every 30 days as consequences of COVID-19 are expected to be felt for months, he said.

The plan is designed to preserve staff assigned to “essential face-to-face patient care roles working in acute care and ambulatory settings” by not adjusting compensation for those health workers, Kenagy said.

Kenagy said the hospital would require medical personnel capable of responding to an anticipated surge in seriously ill people during April. State and federal health officials predict infection rates in Kansas will peak in the final week of the month.

“We need clinical team members to continue to step up during the anticipated influx of COVID-19 positive patients, as well as care for all other patient needs,” Kenagy said. “We are preparing, training and investing in individuals who move to these areas of critical need.”

                            • Second Positive Case of COVID-19 Identified in Barton County

                              Published on Tuesday, 31 March 2020 19:24

The Barton County Health Department has reported a second positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Barton County. Testing was confirmed on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 31.

The case involves a male patient from the city of Claflin over the age of 60 with a known travel history.

The Barton County Health Department is working with KDHE on intensive patient contact investigation. This individual will be asked to provide contact information.

The Health Department is relying on the individual to identify whom he had contact with while symptomatic. Any identified persons who are at risk of exposure will be contacted as soon as possible. The Health Department will monitor all known contacts for fever and respiratory symptoms.

A contact is defined as exposure with the affected person for more than 10 minutes within a six-foot perimeter.

No further information about the patient will be released.

                              • CORONAVIRUS: Coffey County positive cases now at 16

The rise in positive COVID-19 cases for Coffey County is continuing.

The Coffey County Health Department announced two more positive cases Tuesday evening. The cases involve an 86-year-old female and a 70-year-old male.

The two new cases, as well as the additional 14 Coffey county cases and three of Lyon County's 12 cases, have been linked to Life Care Center in Burlington. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment identified Life Care as the common link between the cases Monday and are currently looking into what may have led to the spread within the facility.

The health department says it has contacted those who were exposed to these cases and will be actively monitoring those individuals for signs of symptoms for the next 14 days.
