JIC RELEASE NO. 303 - Cumulative Results: Seventy-four Test Positive for COVID-19; New Case Definition Changes how Probable Cases are Classified; Profiles of Confirmed Cases
Press Release Posted on Date: 09/03/2020 07:30 pm
    ...
New Case Definition Changes how Probable Cases are Classified
On August 5, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) approved a new case definition for COVID-19 which was adopted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To classify as a probable case, the following criteria must be met:

Meets clinical criteria AND epidemiologic linkage with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for SARS-CoV-2.
    Meets presumptive laboratory evidence.
Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory evidence for SARS-CoV-2.

From March 12 to September 2, Guam reported eight probable cases under the previous case definition: six who were clinically diagnosed without confirmatory laboratory evidence and two who tested positive through antibody testing. On September 3, DPHSS adopted the new CDC case definition for COVID-19 and reclassified Guam COVID-19 cases. Under the new case definition, Guam has no cases that classify as probable cases. The Guam COVID-19 Case Count has been adjusted to reflect the adoption of the new case definition: as of September 3, Guam's COVID-19 Case Count is 1,560 confirmed cases and 0 probable cases.

To date, there have been a total of 1,560 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 13 deaths, 716 not in isolation, and 831 cases in active isolation. Of those cases, 1,334 are classified as civilians and 226 are military service members.

The Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth COVID-19-related fatalities occurred today.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the second patient, a 36-year-old female, passed away at GMH. She is the island’s second youngest COVID-related fatality.

Both patients were not known COVID-19 cases; however, both were swabbed at GMH and their results came back positive.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., a third patient, a 74-year-old male, passed away at Naval Hospital Guam.

“To the people of Guam, we have had too many days filled with grief and too many lives lost. Thirteen people have succumbed to this virus. Contrary to what some have said, not all of them were elderly—two of them were in their thirties, with their lives ahead of them,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “I ask the island to keep their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers, to not only mourn their passing but to also remember them for the lives they lived.”

The three recent deaths will be counted in Guam’s overall COVID-19 case count, bringing Guam’s total to 13 COVID-19-related fatalities.
