Georgia saw its greatest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases based on numbers from the Georgia Department of Public Health on Saturday.

Public health records show that 9,837 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized in Georgia since the outbreak began in March. Of those, 4,525 have been hospitalized since the state began its phased-in reopening at the end of April. The Georgia Department of Public Health acknowledges that this number likely is an “underestimation” since cases only count if the patient was hospitalized when their case was reported. It does not include the number of patients hospitalized after diagnosis and does not differentiate between current and past hospitalizations.

Deaths have nearly tripled and the overall number of hospitalizations in Northeast Georgia has doubled since May first when Georgia started reopening.
