Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell's office said Wednesday a D.C.-based staffer has tested positive for COVID-19. It's the first known case on Capitol Hill.
"The individual has been in isolation since starting to have symptoms," according to a release from the office. "On the advice of the Attending Physician, the senator has closed her Washington, D.C. office this week for deep cleaning and staff will be teleworking."...
Ten people have tested positive for the virus in D.C.
A rector in his 50s at Christ Church Georgetown was the first person to test positive. He had "no history of international travel and no close contacts with a confirmed case," Bowser said.
A 39-year-old organist at the same church, Christ Church Georgetown, later tested positive as well.
Another of the D.C. patients is a man from Nigeria. According to the mayor's office, the man, who is in his 50s, traveled to D.C. and then went to Maryland, where he went to a hospital with symptoms.
The other patients are a 77-year-old man who attended a conference held in Boston last month by the biotechnology company Biogen, a 59-year-old man with a history of travel to a Level 3 country, a 58-year-old woman who attended a conference in the District where other positive cases were identified, a 39-year-old man with a history of travel to a Level 3 country, a 24-year-old man with no known exposure, a 59-year-old woman who had contact with a previously identified case in the District, and a 69-year-old woman with no known exposure the mayor's office said.
Coronavirus USA Update: COVID-19 Enters Senate, Staff Tests Positive
"On Wednesday, it was learned a staffer working for Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-WA, at her Washington D.C. office tested positive for "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)," the disease that causes COVID-19.
Cantwell’s office said this woman staffer had no known contact with the senator or other lawmakers. Confirmation of the infection, however, led Sen. Cantwell to close her D.C. office for the remainder of the week."
Fears of a COVID-19 rampage in the U.S. Congress is growing after seven lawmakers enter self-quarantine and a Senate staffer tests positive for COVID-19.
