First Confirmed Case of COVID-19 In Eagle County
By Christin Kay • 3 minutes ago

Eagle County Public Health and Environment is reporting the first positive case of COVID-19, or coronavirus, in the county.

The patient is a woman in her 50s visiting the area and likely exposed during international travel. The patient was not hospitalized and is recovering in isolation. The patient is working with public health officials in the ongoing investigation to identify people that may have had close exposure. The case is presumptive positive, which means test results haven’t yet been confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention...

As of March 7, 2020, eight cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Colorado:

        Denver County
        • One case in a man in his 40s. The investigation is ongoing.
        • One case in a woman in her 70s, exposed during international travel.

        Douglas County
        • One case in a school-aged female, exposed during international travel.
        • One case in a woman in her 40s, exposed during international travel.
        • One case in a woman in her 70s, exposed during international travel.

        Eagle County
        • One case in a woman in her 50s, exposed during international travel.

        El Paso County
        • One case in a man in his 40s. The investigation is ongoing.

        Summit County
        • One case in a man in his 30s, an out-of-state resident who was exposed during international travel or through contact with an out-of-state case.

This week, the state laboratory expanded testing guidelines to ensure early detection in order to slow and limit transmission.

When cases test positive, the individual and their close contacts like family members and roommates are instructed to “isolate” (isolation is in the case of a person with a positive COVID test) or “quarantine” themselves (quarantine is if there is a suspected exposure). Meanwhile the state or local public health agency works to identify other possible contacts. Public health agencies can issue individual quarantine and isolation orders requiring individuals to remain at home for a certain period of time. Quarantine orders also include instructions for how to seek care and testing if the individual becomes symptomatic. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and local public health agencies began to issue orders on Thursday with the announcement of positive cases.

Per protocol, each local public health agency is the lead investigator on cases involving people who reside within their jurisdictions. They will provide information as necessary and appropriate to protect the public’s health. The state will provide technical assistance to counties and will act as the lead investigator on any cases that occur in Colorado but involve residents of other states or countries. The department will update numbers on our website and provide daily media summaries as long as necessary.

First two COVID-19 cases confirmed in Arapahoe County; governor declares state of emergency for Colorado
At least 15 in the state have tested likely positive for coronavirus

                Ellis Arnold

Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of emergency in response to the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by a widespread coronavirus, as the number of cases in Colorado grew to at least 15.

“Our administration's response will be guided by the science and lessons learned from the countries and states that this virus arrived in first,” Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement. “We will continue to be proactive and working around the clock to protect public health and safety with an eye towards preventing the need for more drastic measures that result in social disruption.”

Polis' announcement March 10 came as Arapahoe County saw its first two cases announced that morning and the previous night. One is a man in his 50s, and the other is a woman in her 30s.

The woman recently returned from travel to India and lives in Centennial, according to the Tri-County Health Department, which oversees Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. No further information on how the man contracted COVID-19 was immediately available...

Primavera will be in attendance. “While we were expecting this day, it doesn't make it any less difficult to hear and share this news. As a state we are in mourning and our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the Coloradan we lost,” said Governor Jared Polis. “We care deeply about our older Coloradans and people who have chronic diseases,” said Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “This is an all-hands-on-deck effort to slow the spread and support people during these trying times. We know Coloradans will do whatever it takes to help protect those at risk of getting very sick.” “We offer our deepest, heartfelt condolences to the family and are saddened by this news,” said Susan Wheelan, El Paso County Public Health Director. “We have a dedicated team of experts working around the clock to protect the health and safety of our community. • Signed an emergency executive order aimed at minimizing the spread of the virus.
                          • Allocated $4 million dollars to immediately help response efforts in our communities.
                          • Ordered paid sick leave for workers in many occupations.
                          • Set public health orders to protect our most at-risk populations, including those who live in nursing homes and similar facilities.
                          • Issued directions that ensure Coloradans can get access to medical care for COVID-19 without fearing the cost.
                          • Worked diligently to ensure testing is available for all who need it through either public health or private labs.
Locally, El Paso County Public Health has been working with partners since it learned of COVID-19 (late last year) from the CDC. With partners from the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management, public health has:

                          • Coordinating with key stakeholders and City and County partners to address community needs.
                          • Activated a Joint Information Center to field inquiries and streamline communication efforts.
The people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 are:
                          • Older people (over age 60), especially those over 80 years.
                          • People who have chronic medical conditions like heart, lung, or kidney disease, or diabetes.
                          • Older people with chronic medical conditions are at greatest risk.
To ensure expedience on reporting presumptive positive cases, the state will provide overall testing statistics as soon as we are able on the website.

Virus reaches ‘community transmission’ in Aspen

                            | March 13, 2020
                            Jason Auslander

jauslander@aspentimes.com The Aspen-area community is now experiencing “community transmission” of the COVID-19 virus, two local public health officials said Friday.

That means the virus has spread among the local population — outside of the group of visiting Australians who were previously identified as the area’s only cases — and cannot be traced back to an original source, said Karen Koenemann, Pitkin County Public Health director.

“From what (the state public health department has) seen, … we have limited community spread in this community,” she said during a media briefing call Friday afternoon. “We know for certain that there’s community spread in Eagle County.
“And so, because of that, knowing it’s just a matter of time, we decided to be really proactive with Eagle and Garfield (counties) around this.”

The comment referenced a tri-county public health order issued late Thursday night forbidding gatherings of more than 50 people until April 8.
But the diagnosis of Aspen community transmission of the virus was not backed up by official test numbers of local Aspen or Pitkin County residents who have come up positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Koenemann said local public health officials hadn’t received test results back from the state lab from samples taken from at least 25 residents Wednesday and Thursday. She said she did not know when those results might become available.

Nonetheless, Aspen Ambulance Director Gabe Muething agreed that Aspen-area community transmission of the virus has occurred.

“We know at this point we do have community transmission,” Muething said during Friday’s media call

                              Colorado COVID-19 Case Summary

                              UPDATED: March 14, 3:00 p.m. COVID-19 Test Result Overview

                              • Positive*: 101
                              • Negative**: 610
                              • Total number of people tested**: 711
*Originally we classified cases as “presumptive positive” until they could be re-tested by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC confirmed we no longer need to send positive cases for re-testing because the test they perform is identical to the CDPHE testing. Therefore, all positive cases reported here are confirmed.

**Now that private labs are conducting testing, the positive cases number represents all positive cases in the state. The negative and total numbers represent just the confirmed data from the state lab. Private labs are not required to report negative numbers to the state.

Numbers are changing very quickly. We will do our best to update them as soon as possible.

Please note: information may change slightly as more information is collected on each patient.
