Confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Animals in the United States

The table below lists cases of SAR-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans) in animals that have been confirmed by USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories. Only the first animal of a species at a single facility, home or location will be reported in the table.

SARS-CoV-2 is considered to be an emerging disease by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). USDA must report confirmed animal infections in the United States to the OIE. We are still learning about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 in people, but it appears that it can spread from people to animals in some situations. A small number of animals worldwide, have been reported to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, mostly after close contact with people with COVID-19. More information on COVID-19 can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...r-animals.html

Epidemiological comments 27 Aug 2020 Update-- Georgia (GA): One additional dog in Berrien County, GA who has shown no clinical signs but shared the same household with the SARS-CoV-2 confirmed positive dog has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by virus neutralization (VN). A domestic cat from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). The affected cat was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and exhibited respiratory clinical signs that appeared to worsen. The cat tested positive for both mycoplasma felis and SARS-CoV-2 at the initial testing laboratory. Maryland (MD): A domestic cat from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). Mild clinical signs were reported. Resampling of all animals in household (4 other cats plus 1 dog) previously positive cat tested negative by PCR – all other samples negative by PCR; all animals appeared normal at resampling. California (CA): A domestic cat from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR).The cat had very mild respiratory signs. Utah (UT): Following increased mortality rates, domestic American Mink (Neovison vison) from three commercial premises were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). Clinical signs included respiratory signs and sudden death. State Officials in Utah have quarantined the premises and are working closely with federal One Health partners to complete disposal and monitor the situation. Please note: To protect any data related to human cases, the location used for these outbreaks is that of the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL), where animal testing samples were first collected. Due to limitations with the WAHIS system, the map notation indicates disease outbreaks in wild mink, however the affected populations are domesticated American Mink (Neovison vison) from commercial premises as stated above.

Eight other cats and two dogs residing in the same household have remained asymptomatic and tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR. Texas (TX): A domestic cat from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). The affected cat showed no clinical signs and continues to be asymptomatic. Two dogs residing in the same household have remained asymptomatic and tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR. Texas (TX): A domestic dog from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). The affected dog showed no clinical signs and continues to be asymptomatic. Samples for all of the above cases were collected as part of planned and targeted active surveillance of a specific animal, with known or suspected exposures to a person with COVID-19 or other exposure to SARS-CoV-2, to better understand risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Epidemiological comments 24 Sep 2020 Update-- Louisiana (LA): Virus neutralizing antibody for SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the affected cat from Rapides Parish as well as the dog and cat who share the same household. Kentucky (KY): A domestic cat from a known positive COVID-19 household was confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing (PCR and sequencing). The cat showed clinical signs of increased respiratory rate, congestion, sneezing, cough and some vomiting. Two other cats residing in the same household have shown mild clinical signs and will also be tested for SARS-CoV-2. Utah (UT): Following increased mortality rates, domestic American Mink (Neovison vison) from one commercial premises were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories based upon molecular testing results (PCR and sequencing) and meeting case definition. Confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in domestic mink from the United States have now been identified on six commercial premises. Clinical signs included ill thrift and sudden death. The affected premises reported a confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in a person that was in contact with the mink. State Officials in Utah have quarantined the premises and are working closely with federal One Health partners to complete carcass disposal and monitor the situation. Mink mortality rates on the affected premises have since decreased, returning to normal levels. Please note: To protect confidentiality of any data related to human cases, the location used for this outbreak is that of the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL), where animal testing samples were first collected. Due to limitations with the WAHIS system, the map notation indicates disease outbreaks in wild mink, however the affected populations are domesticated American Mink (Neovison vison) from commercial premises as stated above.
