The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has removed a running tally of the number of people tested for coronavirus in the US.

The deletion comes amid questions over the number of people tested in the US, and suggestions that the low number of tests could limit the countries' response to the spread of the disease.

"The lack of testing is a scandal," wrote Judd Legum, the journalist who first spotted the change, on Twitter. "This is the coverup.
          ...

"Americans are dying," he wrote. "We deserve to know how many Americans have perished from COVID-19, and we deserve to know how many people have been tested for it.

"Knowing that CDC testing is keeping pace with the likely number of cases is imperative to maintaining public trust. With that in mind, when will you return to publicly reporting the total number of deaths and tested persons on your website?"

          ...
On 1 March, the site showed that 472 people had been tested for the disease by the CDC, with 22 of them confirmed or presumed positive. A day later, the number of people tested had disappeared, and the number of cases had nearly doubled.
"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."

California county says person who died from coronavirus had recently taken cruise to Mexico

Updated 4:06 PM ET, Wed March 4, 2020

(CNN)As officials around the country urged local communities to think about ways to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading, California authorities said Wednesday that a person who died from Covid-19 had recently been on a cruise.

The patient, whose name wasn't released, was elderly and had underlying health conditions, and probably was exposed to the virus on a cruise from February 11 to 21 between San Francisco and Mexico, Placer County health officials said.
A person from Sonoma County who was on the cruise has contracted the virus.
The ship involved, the Grand Princess, is in the Pacific, and cruisegoers on this voyage and the previous one received a health advisory Wednesday. The ship is skipping its last port of call and returning to San Francisco. It is expected to arrive Thursday.

CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The outbreak first started in Wuhan, China, but cases have been identified in a growing number of other locations internationally, including the United States. In addition to CDC, many public health laboratories are now testing for the virus that causes COVID-19.

                              COVID-19: U.S. at a Glance*
                              Total cases: 647
                              Total deaths: 25
Jurisdictions reporting cases: 36 (includes District of Columbia)
                              * Data include both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United States from Wuhan, China and Japan. State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. In the event of a discrepancy between CDC cases and cases reported by state and local public health officials, data reported by states should be considered the most up to date.

† CDC is no longer reporting the number of persons under investigation (PUIs) that have been tested, as well as PUIs that have tested negative. Now that states are testing and reporting their own results, CDC’s numbers are not representative of all testing being done nationwide.
