(TibetanReview.net, Feb15’20) – The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Tibetan regions of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has been reported to total 70 as of Feb 14, although it was not clear how many of them were Tibetans.

Available reports appear to suggest that the Tibetan populated county of Tawu (Chinese: Daofu) in Kardze (Ganzi) Prefecture, Sichuan Province, has the largest number of cases among Tibetan populated regions in the PRC. Confirmed numbers had jumped to 38, with most of the patients being among three families, reported the Tibetan Service of rfa.org Feb 14, citing Chinese state media and other sources.

The report said the six most recent patients were life-long residents of the county and had no history of traveling outside the region. It added that all the patients with confirmed cases were being taken to the prefectural capital Dartsedo (Kangding) for treatment....

China is mobilizing to control the narrative on coronavirus

About three weeks ago, Ivo Daalder, former US ambassador to NATO, submitted one of his bi-monthly columns to The Chicago Tribune for publication. In it, Daalder criticized China for choosing “secrecy and inaction” in dealing with Covid-19, as the disease caused by the coronavirus is officially known. He wrote that China had turned “the possibility of an epidemic into a reality.”
              ....
              .....
Four days later, the column was picked up by The Korea Herald, and then published by The Kathmandu Post in Nepal, alongside an illustration of Mao Zedong wearing a surgical mask. Pandemonium broke out.

Zhao Jian, China’s consul general in Chicago, sent a letter to the editor of the Tribune, accusing Daalder of inaccuracies and bias. In Nepal, the Chinese embassy issued a strongly-worded statement that said the Kathmandu Post was “malicious” in choosing to publish the editorial and the accompanying image, and accused its editor-in-chief of “becoming a parrot of some anti-China forces.” In response, editors from major publications across Nepal published an open letter calling the Chinese embassy’s actions “a direct threat to the Nepali people’s right to a free press.”

              .....
Experts on Europe’s relationship with China say this is part of a broader pattern of increased hostility from Chinese diplomats on issues ranging from coronavirus to Taiwan, Tibet, and Hong Kong

[Commentary] As the haze of the new crown pneumonia epidemic gradually dissipated, the diversion route of the Barkhor Street of the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet was opened to the public on April 28. Activity returned to normal.
Affected by the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, Barkhor Street was closed on January 27 and reopened three months later. On the same day, the people who came to pass by formed a long line outside the security station in the ancient city of Barkhor and entered Barkhor Street in an orderly manner.

In order to prevent crowds from gathering and congestion, sang sang is temporarily not allowed on the turnaround of Barkhor Street. The believers look forward to the opening of Jokhang Temple and Potala Palace as soon as possible to resume normal Buddhist activities.
