Sweden Coronavirus Covid-19 - 86,505 cases,?5,846 deaths
Sweden is far from unaffected by the coronavirus epidemic, with markets in free fall, mass unemployment on the horizon, and the health services under growing pressure. As of Tuesday, a total of 36 Swedes have died after contracting the novel coronavirus and there are more than 2,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, although the real number is not known since testing is generally limited to hospital patients and elderly home residents who show symptoms of COVID-19. Moreover, the Public Health Agency has refused to make public risk assessments or prediction models for the spread of the virus.

While its Nordic neighbours have closed all schools and shops to fight the spread of coronavirus, Sweden’s latest decree in the crisis has been to impose table service-only in restaurants.
Sweden had 2,510 confirmed cases and 42 deaths from Covid-19 by Wednesday, though the real number of infected is likely higher after a shift in testing rules to focus on at-risk groups.
Unlike neighbouring Norway, Denmark and Finland, Sweden’s government has adopted a looser, more voluntary approach to the growing crisis.
Gatherings of up to 500 people are still permitted and only university and higher education have moved teaching online.

Sweden Bans Groups Larger Than 50 In Its First Major Coronavirus Crackdown

Sweden's prime minister announced Friday that public gatherings of more than 50 people will be banned as of Sunday, with violators subject to fines or even imprisonment.
The ban is much tighter than the country's previous restriction on groups over 500, but looser than limits imposed elsewhere in Europe. It amounts to a major crackdown in a country that has otherwise become known for its lenient approach to coronavirus management.
While neighboring Denmark was one of the first European countries after Italy to announce it would close all public schools and daycare centers, Sweden's institutions remain open. The country also hasn't followed its Scandinavian neighbors' lead in shutting down bars, restaurants, sports practices or national borders...

There is no evidence that Swedes are underplaying the enormity of the disease rampaging across the globe. The country’s leader and health officials have stressed hand washing, social distancing and protecting people over the age of 70 by limiting contact with them.
But peer into any cafe in the capital, Stockholm, and groups of two or more people can be seen casually dining and enjoying cappuccinos. Playgrounds are full of running, screaming children. Restaurants, gyms, malls and ski slopes have thinned out but are still in use.
The state epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, said in an interview that Sweden’s strategy is based on science and boiled down to this: “We are trying to slow the spread enough so that we can deal with the patients coming in.”

Sweden’s approach appeals to the public’s self-restraint and sense of responsibility, Mr. Tegnell said. “That’s the way we work in Sweden. Our whole system for communicable disease control is based on voluntary action. The immunization system is completely voluntary and there is 98 percent coverage,” he explained.

That approach is now sparking concerns among public health officials as coronavirus cases mount across Scandinavia — Sweden alone had 3,447 reported cases as of Sunday, with 102 deaths. At stake is also Scandinavia’s reputation as a leader and trendsetter in public health — a status progressives in America frequently cite as an example. Sweden’s deputy state epidemiologist, Anders Wallensten, has argued that strategies to battle the virus can vary between nations depending, among other factors, on “what stage a country is in with regards to the epidemic.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sweden stood at 4,435 and 358 patients have been or are being treated in intensive care units. Of the 180 dead, 105 were men and 75 were women.

Regarding Imperial College London’s much-cited report, Dr Tegnell has previously admitted he was “a bit surprised that it’s had such an impact.” He added: “It’s not a peer-reviewed paper.”
Dr Tegnell’s strategy appears to have drawn support within Sweden. According to one poll, about three-quarters of the Swedish public is at least quite confident that the country is taking the necessary precautions to deal with coronavirus.
In line with a study publish by Harvard University, which shows that enacting harsh social distancing measures could lead to a resurgence of infections in the autumn, Dr Tegnell has said that “having a very abrupt stop of the spread now would actually move the problem ahead of us”.
However, others within Sweden have raised concern that the country’s current approach is dismissing scientific data and risking thousands of lives in the process.
A petition signed by more than 2,000 doctors, scientists, and professors has called on the government to tighten restrictions and enforce strict containment measures.
Cecilia Soderberg-Naucler, a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said: “I am a scientist. I don’t trust authorities, I trust data.
“I don’t see transparency of data that makes me calm and believe the right strategy has been chosen.
“We’re not testing enough, we’re not tracking, we’re not isolating enough – we’ve let the virus loose.”
It is unclear how many people in Sweden have already contracted coronavirus.
Tom Britton, a maths professor at Stockholm University who has been modelling the spread of the virus, predicts 10 per cent of the population is already infected. “If I guess correctly about half the population could be infected by the end of April,” he told The Times.
Although Mr Tegnell has avoided describing his strategy as ‘herd immunity’, he has spoken of the inevitability of the disease passing through a large proportion of the population.
He has said his goal is to slow the spread of infection to a manageable pace which would avoid straining the country’s healthcare system, and believes a strict lockdown is not necessary to achieve that.
“We put in a lot of effort trying to stop the disease from entering Sweden,” said Dr Tegnell. “We also did a lot of testing and contact tracing. This bought us time for the health service to prepare.”
Although Sweden’s figures lag behind the UK’s – to date, 6,433 cases and 373 deaths have been reported by health officials – the country is believed to be a number of weeks behind on the virus curve.

STOCKHOLM (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 08th April, 2020) The number of people infected with coronavirus in Sweden reached 8,400, and the number of deaths neared 700 people, the country's chief epidemiologist said on Wednesday.
"The number of cases in Sweden today is 8,419 people. The number of deaths has reached 687," Anders Tegnell said.
The number of new infections in Stockholm is stabilizing, he said.
"At the same time, we can state that the number of cases in other regions is on the rise," Tegnell said...
