  • Coronavirus outbreak at S.Korea e-commerce warehouse drives spike in new cases

SEOUL, May 27 — South Korea reported the highest daily number of new coronavirus cases in 49 days today, as one of the country’s largest e-commerce companies battled an outbreak linked to a now-shuttered logistics facility.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 40 new cases as of midnight yesterday, bringing the country’s total number to 11,265. A day earlier the country recorded 19 new cases.

So far, at least 36 cases have been linked to an outbreak at the logistics centre operated by SoftBank-backed e-commerce firm Coupang Corp in Bucheon, west of Seoul, the KCDC said. It was not immediately clear how many of the cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

About 3,600 people at the facility are being tested. The company said it closed the centre on Monday and began the strongest disinfection measures recommended by authorities.

South Korea is grappling to contain a spike in new coronavirus cases as clusters continue to pop up in cities across the country, putting authorities and the public on edge.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday reported 79 new cases from the previous day, raising the national count to 11,344.

This marks the biggest daily increase in 53 days and was mostly attributed to mass infections at e-commerce operator Coupang's logistics center in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.

At least 69 cases have been linked to this cluster as of Thursday morning.

Over 100 Virus Infections Tied To Coupang Center
      2020-05-29
At least 102 coronavirus infections have now been traced to a logistics center run by Coupang in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 70 of the cases were infected at the center while the remaining are people that they came into contact with.

Health authorities said they have completed tests on 88 percent of over 4,300 workers and visitors at the distribution center.

Officials have called on residents in the Seoul metropolitan area to avoid large gatherings and to cancel or postpone events for two weeks to stem the further spread of the virus.
