    USFK COVID-19: Updated February 19, 2020

By USFK Public Affairs | Feb. 19, 2020

From Gen. Robert B. "Abe" Abrams, USFK Commander:

    February 19, 2020:

Due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Daegu, I want to emphasize the care and well-being of our Daegu service members, families and civilians is a top priority of mine. I’ve implemented the following proactive and precautionary measures to ensure USFK remains vigilant in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in Daegu to protect the force:

All service members who’ve attended the New World Church (Sin Cheon Ji Gyo hoe) since Feb. 9 will undergo a mandatory self-quarantine - and is highly recommended for family members, civilians and contractors - until KCDC completes their contact trace procedures to determine who has been exposed to COVID-19.

All service member's non-essential travel to and from Daegu will be prohibited, and off-installation travel minimized; I highly request all family members, civilians and contractors do likewise regarding their travel as well.

All USAG-Daegu and Area IV schools, child development centers, and child & youth services activities will be closed Thursday, and we will make a decision regarding a Friday closure tomorrow.

All visitors who are not performing mission essential or official business will be denied access to USAG-Daegu and Area IV military installations for the next 24 hours, and this directive will be reassessed every 24 hours.

As a Health Protection measure, I’ve elevated the risk for USFK peninsula-wide personnel and installations to moderate until KCDC completes its contact trace procedures.

Finally, good hygiene practice is the best preventive measure to controlling the spread of viruses. We must protect the force and our community by maintaining our "Fight Tonight" readiness!..https://www.usfk.mil/Media/News/Arti...ruary-19-2020/

Daegu Army base restricts access, imposes self-quarantine after South Korean church linked to coronavirus

    • By KIM GAMEL | STARS AND STRIPESPublished: February 19, 2020

SEOUL, South Korea — The Daegu Army garrison restricted access and imposed self-quarantine for any U.S. troops who recently attended a local church linked to a cluster of new coronavirus infections on Wednesday as South Korea’s infection toll surpassed 50.

The top U.S. commander in South Korea also raised the risk level for the military community on the divided peninsula to moderate.

U.S. Army Garrison Daegu, about 155 miles southeast of Seoul, also recommended that members of the military community avoid public places and transportation in the city, including stores, restaurants and other heavily congested areas until a trace investigation is completed.

Schools on the base and several other activities were to be closed on Thursday, the garrison said, adding that conditions would be assessed the next day as South Korean authorities work to determine who has come in contact with infected patients....

Out of continued abundance of caution and the utilizing the USFK Commander's authorities to protect the force, the risk for USFK peninsula-wide personnel and installations remains moderate.

South Korea reports first virus death as Daegu struggles to contain outbreak

By KIM GAMEL AND YOO KYONG CHANG | STARS AND STRIPESPublished: February 20, 2020

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea reported its first coronavirus-linked death Thursday, while the U.S. military tightened restrictions on travel to the southeastern city of Daegu due to an outbreak in infections in the area.

Daegu also urged residents to stay home as the city of 2.5 million people and surrounding areas struggled to contain an outbreak of the pneumonia-like disease.

The Army garrison in Daegu also restricted access and announced that schools and nonessential business would be closed for a second day on Friday.

In an exception to policy, U.S. service members were authorized to wear face masks in uniform “regardless of air quality conditions,” according to the garrison’s Facebook page.

Fast-moving developments this week were a blow to South Korea’s hope that the crisis was easing.

Instead, dozens of new cases were confirmed in recent days, with the total number of infections soaring to 104 on Thursday, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

U.S. Forces Korea said, “there remains zero confirmed cases of USFK personnel with COVID-19.”..

U.S. Army Garrison Daegu, about 200 miles southeast of Seoul, also said visitors not performing mission essential or official business would be denied access as it implemented health checks at the gates....
“National quarantine efforts that are currently focused on blocking the inflow of the virus (from China) and stemming its spread are inadequate for preventing the illness from circulating in local communities,” Mayor Kwon Young-jin was quoted as saying by The Associated Press....“So far, 65 persons within USFK populations have been self-quarantined with 61 medically cleared for duty,” USFK spokesman Col. Lee Peters said Thursday in an email....https://www.stripes.com/news/pacific...break-1.619407

Camp Humphrey’s Facebook page is very transparent on status updates. Notice was also put out of child services, youth group cancelations. Here’s an example of quarters or quarantine implementation.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The number of new virus cases in South Korea jumped again Wednesday and the first U.S. military soldier tested positive, with his infection and many others connected to a southeastern city where the outbreak has clustered.

South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 134 of the 169 new cases were confirmed in Daegu, where the government has been mobilizing public health tools to contain the virus. Another 19 cases were in neighboring North Gyeongsang province towns.

A U.S. military statement said the 23-year-old soldier who tested positive was in self quarantine at his off-base residence. He had been based in Camp Caroll in a town near Daegu, and visited Camp Walker in Daegu earlier this week...

By KIM GAMEL | STARS AND STRIPES Published: February 28, 2020

SEOUL, South Korea — The wife of an American soldier who tested positive for the new coronavirus also has been infected, the military said Saturday as the total number of confirmed cases in South Korea neared 3,000.

The soldier was the first U.S. service member to contract the pneumonia-like illness, which has spread rapidly since first appearing in China late last year.

His wife has been in self-quarantine since Wednesday, when her husband tested positive, according to U.S. Forces Korea.

“She is currently being transported to a U.S. military hospital where she'll be in isolation under direct medical care and supervision from U.S. military medical providers,” USFK said in a press release...

A USFK Korean National employee tested positive for COVID-19, making this the seventh USFK-related personnel to be confirmed with the virus.

The employee is currently in isolation at her off-base residence in Asan as directed by KCDC.

KCDC and USFK health professionals are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether anyone else may have been exposed.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean woman who works for the U.S. military in Daegu tested positive for the new coronavirus, raising the military’s total to nine, the command said Tuesday, as the overall number of cases in South Korea showed signs of slowing.

U.S. Forces Korea said the woman, who worked at Camp Walker, has isolated herself at her off-base residence in the southeastern city, which is at the center of the outbreak that has led to more than 7,500 infections nationwide, with 54 deaths.

South Korean and U.S. military health professionals “are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether anyone else may have been exposed,” USFK said in a press release, adding the military remains at a “high” risk level across the divided peninsula.
Military officials have tightened access to bases and ordered service members to stay on post as much as possible as it fights to keep the pneumonia-like disease COVID-19 from spreading.

So far, only one American soldier has been infected. The other eight confirmed cases were the soldier’s wife, another dependent of an active-duty service member, the wife of a civilian Defense Department employee, the widow of a military retiree and four South Korean employees....https://www.stripes.com/news/pacific...owing-1.621854
