    S. Korea has more COVID-19 cases due to high diagnostic capability, says study

    Updated March. 07, 2020 07:52

South Korea appears to have more confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) than other countries due to its high diagnostic capability, according to health experts.

A report titled, “The current status of COVID-19 and its problems” published by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs shows that South Korea has tested a total of 75,792 people for COVID-19 as of Monday while Japan and the U.S. have tested only 2,517 and 472, respectively. The number of South Korea’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 stood at 4,212 and 5.6% of people tested have been diagnosed with COVID-19. The figure is almost twice as high in Japan with the confirmed cases of COVID-19 standing at 239 despite the fact that much fewer people are being tested.

South Korean health authorities have argued that the country has a high number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 because it is testing more people at a faster pace. “We’ve made more prompt efforts than any other countries to prevent the spread of the disease,” said Kim Kang-lib of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on Friday. “We’re preemptively testing a higher percentage of population than that of any other countries for the early detection of the disease.”..

    • Residents at Daegu apartment tower in cohort isolation following group infection

      Welfare/Medicine 09:46 March 07, 2020
DAEGU, March 7 (Yonhap) -- Residents at an apartment tower in the southeastern city of Daegu have entered cohort isolation following group infections, Daegu city officials said Saturday.

The first cohort isolation at an apartment block came after 46 were infected with the COVID-19 virus in the residential complex where 141 people live, according to officials of the city where the largest numbers of infections have occurred in the country.

The city government said it has sent text messages to residents notifying them of a full entry and exit ban, which applies to all residents and delivery workers.

The apartment block, which consists of two five-story buildings, is run by the city for unmarried women who are under 35 years old. A total of 141 people live in 137 flats.

Cohort isolation is a way to contain the virus by putting patients and medical personnel under a group quarantine....https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2020030...ience/medicine

      • . Korea's virus cases near 6,600, with another cluster of infections looming

...Aside from Daegu and North Gyeongsang, cases of community spread with unknown origins, mostly cluster and sporadic outbreaks, are gradually on the rise. Seoul's confirmed cases rose by four to 105, with 14 cases linked to Eunpyeong St. Mary's Hospital in Eunpyeong Ward. Another 13 cases in Seoul came from an apartment building in Seongdong Ward.

Virus cases in Busan rose by three to 95, with 33 patients linked to a Christian church in the Dongnae district and another nine patients linked to Shincheonji. The 33 patients of the Oncheon church in Busan are tied to the church's three-day retreat that ended on Feb. 17, officials said. It is still unclear how they were infected with the virus.

In the central cities of Cheonan and Asan, 58 of the total 92 patients were tied to a Zumba dance class last month in Cheonan, officials said.

A total of 765 virus patients with mild or moderate symptoms in Daegu have been admitted to isolation facilities, Kim said, adding that more than 800 patients will be admitted to such facilities next week....https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2020030...ience/medicine

A majority of the new cases again came from the southeastern city of Daegu and neighboring North Gyeongsang Province, the two epicenters of the virus outbreak that together account for more than 90 percent of all infection cases, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Of the 367 new cases, which were detected Saturday, 294 cases came from Daegu, the country's fourth-largest city with a population of about 2.5 million that is located some 300 kilometers from Seoul.

                            REPUBLIC OF KOREA-COVID 19-CONFIRMED CASES

SEOUL, March 8, 2020 (Xinhua) - Medical workers rest in a research clinic, in Suwon, Republic of Korea, on March 8, 2020. Republic of Korea confirmed 179 more cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, increasing the total number of infections at 7,313. (Xinhua / NEWSIS)

SEOUL, March 9 (Xinhua) - South Korea today confirmed 96 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections to 7,478, and two more deaths were reported, leaving the number of deaths at 53.

Among the patients, 42 were in critical condition, which increases the possibility of increased mortality.

The total number of infections in Daegu, about 300 km southeast of Seoul, and the surrounding province of North Gyeongsang increased to 5,571 and 1,107 respectively from midnight, which represents about 90 percent of the total.

The numbers in Seoul and its adjacent province of Gyeonggi were 130 and 152 in each.

Daegu became the epicenter of viral spread, since the largest group of infections was found in the metropolis with a population of 2.5 million. The city has been designated by the government as a "special care zone."

Daegu's focus is closely linked to the services of a religious sect called Sincheonji. Health authorities said 62.5 percent of patients are related to the infections reported in the case of the religious congregation.

Robust healthcare, prior preparation, aggressive testing – and good fortune
by Andrew Salmon March 9, 2020

South Korea has the dubious distinction of suffering the second-highest number of Covid-19 infections after China – but can also boast the lowest death ratio among countries with significant numbers of cases.

According to the WHO on March 6, the crude mortality ratio for Covid-19 – that is, the number of reported deaths divided by the number of reported cases – is between 3-4%. In Korea, as of March 9, that figure was a mere 0.7%...
