    • 99 out of 102 confirmed! Gathering infection in a psychiatric hospital in South Korea
      Source: Xinhua News Agency
      2020-02-24

Xinhua News Agency reported on February 23 that the number of confirmed cases of new crown pneumonia in South Korea rose sharply for many consecutive days. As of 4 pm on the 23rd, the number of confirmed cases has reached 602, and the number of deaths has increased to five.

In addition to a church in Daegu, where 329 people have been diagnosed, the Daejeon Hospital in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do has also become a "hit area." According to South Korean media reports, 111 patients were diagnosed with new crown pneumonia associated with the hospital, of whom 3 died.

South Korean health authorities are investigating the route of infection in these confirmed patients. It is understood that the 31st confirmed patient who was considered a "super communicator" had visited the hospital in early February. The reason for the outbreak of concentrated infections is that people in the medical community speculate that the hospital's psychiatric inpatient area is closed management and no timely response measures were taken or the main reason.

Chiang Dao Danan Hospital is a general hospital mainly for elderly diseases. The majority of inpatients are elderly people. The hospital's psychiatric inpatient building is mostly multi-personal and closed management, with a total of 102 inpatients and 99 confirmed.

The first patient with suspected symptoms at this hospital was an inpatient in a psychiatric department. The patient died on the 21st after the diagnosis and was the second death in South Korea.

South Korean health authorities disclosed that the patient developed sore throat and fever on the 11th. The patient's body temperature was 38.6 ? C that day, and the body temperature fluctuated between 37.7 ? C and 38.5 ? C the next day (12th). Pneumonia symptoms began to appear on the 14th. On the 17th, the patient's temperature was still around 37.8 ? C. He was taken to a university hospital in Daegu because of a suspected myocardial infarction, but the guardian insisted that he should be treated in Danan Hospital, and then returned to Danan Hospital. On the 21st, the patient was diagnosed with the new crown virus and was transferred to the Busan University Hospital, but died unfortunately.

Around 15 days during the period when the patient developed symptoms of infection, several inpatients in his inpatient building also developed symptoms such as fever.

According to the hospital staff, the hospital did not take relevant measures after some inpatients and medical staff appeared suspicious symptoms one after another. It was not until the first death (also inpatients at the hospital) on the 19th that the hospital began to pay attention to testing those with suspected symptoms. As a result, the number of confirmed cases is rising rapidly.

Yonhap believes that the special nature of closed management of psychiatric inpatient areas and the delay in hospital response have led to the current out of control of the speed and scale of virus spread (TV series).

A medical source said with regret: "When the first suspected symptoms appeared on the 11th, it would be nice if the hospital medical staff could use more snacks."

At present, the psychiatric inpatient area of the hospital has been collectively isolated.

"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."

                    • Coronavirus in South Korea

Warning - Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel—Widespread Community Transmission

                      Key Points
                      • CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to South Korea.
                      • There is a widespread, ongoing outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that can be spread from person to person.
                      • Older adults and people with chronic medical conditions may be at increased risk for severe disease.
                      What is the current situation?

CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to South Korea. There is limited access to adequate medical care in affected areas.

A novel coronavirus is causing an outbreak of respiratory illness (COVID-19) in South Korea. Illness with this virus has ranged from mild to severe. Signs and symptoms of infection include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Sore throat also has been reported in some patients. Some patients also have reported diarrhea without other symptoms. This new coronavirus has caused severe disease and death in patients who developed pneumonia. Risk factors for severe illness are not yet clear, although older adults and those with chronic medical conditions may be at higher risk for severe illness.

                      Novel Coronavirus Information for Travelers

Health Information for Travelers to South Korea

What can travelers do to protect themselves and others?

CDC recommends avoiding nonessential travel to South Korea. If you must travel:
                      • Avoid contact with sick people.
                      • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
                      • Discuss travel to South Korea with your healthcare provider. Older adults and travelers with chronic medical conditions may be at risk for more severe disease.
                      • Clean your hands often by washing them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60%–95% alcohol. Soap and water should be used if hands are visibly dirty.
                        • It is especially important to clean hands after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

If you spent time in South Korea during the past 14 days and feel sick with fever or cough, or have difficulty breathing:
                      • Seek medical advice. Call ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room. Tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
                      • Avoid contact with others.
                      • Do not travel while sick.
                      • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
                      • Clean your hands often by washing them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60%–95% alcohol immediately after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. Soap and water should be used if hands are visibly dirty.
                      Clinician Information

Healthcare providers should obtain a detailed travel history for patients with fever or acute respiratory symptoms. For patients with these symptoms who were in South Korea and had onset of illness within 2 weeks of leaving, consider the novel coronavirus and notify infection control personnel and your local health department immediately.

Although routes of transmission have yet to be definitively determined, CDC recommends a cautious approach to interacting with patients under investigation. Ask such patients to wear a face mask as soon as they are identified. Conduct patient evaluation in a private room with the door closed, ideally an airborne infection isolation room, if available. Personnel entering the room should use standard precautions, contact precautions, and airborne precautions, and use eye protection (goggles or a face shield). For additional healthcare infection control recommendations, visit CDC's Infection Control webpage.
