Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 13) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday assured the public there is no need to panic following the worldwide spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) because the government is on top of the situation.

In a taped message posted on social media, Duterte said the threat is present, but there is no need to worry because no Filipinos have been infected by the deadly virus despite the three confirmed cases in the country.

"I call on our people to remain calm, vigilant, responsible and I also ask for your trust and cooperation, support as we face the challenge. Tayo ay magkaisa together as one nation, this challenge can be overcome," he said.

Over 230 are currently admitted to various hospitals and classified as “patients under investigation" or PUIs — those who exhibit signs of the new viral infection as well as had history of travel to China or contact with confirmed cases. DOH said 208 of the 408 people under watch for possible infection have already tested negative for COVID-19.

MANILA — With one COVID-19 patient already dead and two fully recovered, the Philippine government is still unable to trace hundreds of people who came in contact with them.

Of the 455 who interacted with the Chinese couple who became the first two cases of COVID-19 in the country — a 38-year-old woman who recovered from the disease and a 44-year-old man who died — only 277 have been interviewed.

Of that number 218 have already completed their 14-day home quarantine, said Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire, Health assistant secretary for public health services, during a press conference. Fifteen are still on home quarantine while 44 who showed symptoms were admitted into hospitals as patients under investigation (PUIs).

Of the contacts of the third case, a 60-year-old Chinese woman who also traveled to the Philippines from Wuhan, only 34 percent or 255 of the total 740 have been traced. The third patient has a longer list of contacts because she rode a fastcraft ferry from Cebu to Bohol, which did not have strict seating arrangements...

Philippines: Criminal Charges Filed over Misinformation on Coronavirus

(Mar. 2, 2020) On February 17, 2020, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that criminal charges had been filed against an individual who was caught spreading misinformation about coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) on social media.

The individual was arrested after he was identified as the author of a Facebook post stating that an alleged coronavirus patient had died at a Philippine hospital.

On discovering the post in question, Philippine police conducted inquiries as to the accuracy of the information with personnel at the hospital where the alleged death had taken place. The hospital personnel indicated that the information was false, which led to the arrest of the post’s author. He was reportedly charged with violating article 154 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes publishing inaccurate information that may endanger the public order.

The PNP has indicated that police officers are coordinating with Facebook Philippines to monitor posts spreading misinformation about the coronavirus disease, and urged the public to avoid posting unverified information related to this virus that may create panic and confusion, warning that they will take appropriate legal action as necessary.
