  • The COVID-19 Elimination Strategy: Why it was the best choice for New Zealand

    University of Otago, Wellington

Professor Michael Baker and Professor Nick Wilson An overview of the elimination strategy adopted by NZ in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was a major switch from the mitigation approach of the pandemic influenza plan. This multi-billion dollar response is by far the largest single public health intervention in NZ’s history. It warrants careful evaluation and continuing improvement as we progress into the uncertain post-elimination world.

Michael Baker and Nick Wilson are public health physicians and professors in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington. Along with several colleagues they developed and promoted a strong containment approach to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have continued to work on generating timely evidence to support the NZ response, much of it disseminated through scientific blogs.

I was glad to hear Prof. Baker say he didn't like the term, 'the new normal', either.
