      Weekly COVID-19 update:15-21 July 2020

987 new COVID-19 infections were reported over the past week. That is nearly twice as many as last week. Hospital admissions for 19 patients due to COVID-19 were reported (current or previous). That is an increase of 3 patients compared to last week. 7 deaths were reported, 1 less than the week before. Not all of the reported confirmed cases, hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last week. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with previous reports that had not yet been included.

The novel coronavirus is starting to spread again in the Netherlands. The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus is increasing. The percentage of positive tests in the test lanes is rising, and the reproduction number (Rt) is above 1. See the news item (follows shortly)

Since 1 June 2020, anyone in the Netherlands with (mild) symptoms can get tested for COVID-19. People can sign up directly to get tested in the GGD test lanes. Tests are also administered by the GP or in hospital, and the regional public health authorities (GGDs) are giving people tests as part of source and contact tracing. Since it is likely that not all people who have COVID-19 will get tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are probably higher than the numbers stated here.

It is still important for people to comply as much as possible with the measures to prevent the spread of the virus: social distancing (stay 1.5 m apart), wash hands, sneeze and cough into your elbow, and use paper tissues. Also: stay home and get tested at the first sign of symptoms. This is how we can keep the novel coronavirus under control.Links

      • Number of COVID-19 infections is increasing

        Publication date 07/21/2020 - 13:56

987 new COVID-19 infections were reported over the past week. This is nearly twice the number of infections reported in the previous week, when 534 new cases were reported.

The number of infections with the novel coronavirus is increasing again. To prevent the virus from continuing to spread, it is important for people to comply with the measures: social distancing (stay 1.5 m apart), wash hands, sneeze and cough into your elbow, and use paper tissues. Also: stay home, work from home, and get tested at the first sign of symptoms.

The reproduction number (R) is used in an epidemic to see how fast the virus is spreading. The reproduction number (Rt) is 1.29 this week. It is the first time since 15 March that the bandwidth of the Rt is completely above 1.0. This is also an indication that, following a period of few infections, the spread of the novel coronavirus is increasing again in the Netherlands. The reproduction number (R) indicates how many other people are infected on average by a person who has the novel coronavirus. The reproduction number is currently at 1.29, which means that 100 people will collectively infect another 129 people.

Percentage of positive tests is rising

Between 13 July and 19 July, 88,886 people* were tested at the GGD test sites. That is an increase of more than 12,000 tests compared to the week before, when 75,547* tests were administered. The percentage of people who tested positive rose from 0.6% in week 28 (6-12 July) to 1.0% in the week of 13-19 July.

There are regional differences in the number of confirmed cases per province (see figure). This is also visible in the number of tests performed per 100,000 inhabitants and the percentage of positive tests per region. (see epidemiological report) The provinces of South Holland, North Holland and Zeeland in particular show an increase in the number of confirmed cases

Number of local clusters in the Netherlands

Spread throughout the country, there is an increase in the number of small local outbreaks (clusters) with at least three related infections. There are currently 96 active COVID-19 clusters in the Netherlands. The average size of these clusters is 5.4 people (range: 3-23). These infections mainly occur at home, but in recent weeks there has been an increase in infections due to contact with other family members, friends, at parties, in the workplace or in caf?s.

              Weekly COVID-19 update: 22-28 July 2020

1,329 new COVID-19 infections were reported over the past week. That is 342 more than the number of confirmed cases reported last week and 795 more than the week before that. Hospital admissions (current or previous) due to COVID-19 were reported during the past week for 23 patients. That is 4 more than last week.

9 deaths of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were reported, 2 more than the week before.

The number of new people who tested positive in the Netherlands continues to increase. In the GGD test lanes, the number of tests increased by almost 23,000 compared to the previous week. The percentage of positive tests remained the same as a week earlier: 1.0%. Just like last week, the reproduction number is above 1. See the news item: Number of COVID-19 infections continues to increase

Not all of the confirmed cases, hospital admissions or deaths that were reported during the past week also occurred within the last week. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with previous reports that had not yet been included.

              • Number of COVID-19 infections continues to increase

                Publication date 07/28/2020 -

1,329 new COVID-19 infections were reported over the past week. That is 342 more confirmed cases reported than the week before that, when 987 new COVID-19 infections were reported.

The virus continues to spread in the Netherlands. The reproduction number (R) indicates how many other people are infected on average by one person who has the novel coronavirus. The reproduction number is 1.40. This means that 100 people who are infected with the novel coronavirus will collectively infect another 140 people.

Although the number is slightly higher than the 1.29 reported last week, the upper limit of the bandwidth has hardly changed. This indicates that the situation has not changed much over the past week.

There are regional differences in the number of confirmed cases (see figure 1). This is also visible in the total number of tests performed in the test lanes per 100,000 inhabitants and the percentage of positive tests per region. (see epidemiological report - only in Dutch) The provinces of South Holland and North Holland in particular show an increase in the number of confirmed cases. The number of new infections remains stable and low in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Flevoland.

Figure 1 Number of confirmed cases per region

In addition to an increase in the number of infections, there is also a shift in age structure. In recent weeks, we have seen a stronger increase among younger age groups than among older age groups. (see figure 2)

Figure 2 number of infections among age groups

More testing, but percentage of positive tests remains stable

Between 20 July and 26 July, 111,764 people* were tested at the GGD test sites. That is an increase of more than 22,878 tests compared to the week before, when 88,886 tests were administered. The percentage of people who tested positive remained the same at 1.0%.

Number of infection clusters is increasing

Spread throughout the country, there is an increase in the number of small local outbreaks (clusters) of three or more related infections. There are currently 133 active COVID-19 clusters in the Netherlands. The average size of these clusters is 5.9 people (range: 3-23). Most infections still take place within the home. The number of infection clusters due to contact with other family members, friends, at parties, in the workplace or other leisure activities is increasing.

                Source and contact tracing

The results of source and contact tracing are now available up to week 29 (6 June to 19 July). Among the close contacts identified in week 29, 354 COVID-19 infections were identified (10.9%). The percentage of contacts that were infected varied between household members and other close contacts. 17.9% of the household members turned out to be infected with the novel coronavirus. 6.8% of the other close contacts were infected.

To prevent the virus from continuing to spread, it is important for people to comply with the measures: Keep your distance, and stay home and get tested if you have symptoms. Wash your hands, sneeze and cough into your elbow, and use paper tissues.

                • National Statistical Office: up to twice as many corona deaths as recorded

The number of people who died of covid-19 is most likely 50 to 100 percent higher than recorded. This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics, after it has used a new method to determine the so-called excess mortality.

People speak of excess mortality when more people die than is normal at the time. It has been known since the outbreak that more people have died from corona than officially registered.

It concerns the period from March 9 to May 24. In those eleven weeks, the excess mortality was between 8,593 and 11,691, according to Statistics Netherlands. These numbers are the minimum and maximum number of people who died from corona.

In the same period, 5,900 covid deaths were recorded. So victims who were not tested are not included. Statistics Netherlands therefore concludes that for every ten fatalities registered, five to ten more people die of corona. Statistics Netherlands notes that this conclusion can be drawn with 95 percent certainty.

Especially in the first phase of the corona outbreak, relatively many people probably died from corona without the deaths as such ending up in the statistics. This has to do with the fact that not so much was tested in the beginning.
Het CBS keek naar de periode van 9 maart tot en met 24 mei.

"From a medical point of view, there is no evidence of a medical effect of wearing face masks, so we decided not to impose a national obligation," said Dutch Medical Care Minister Tamara van Ark late Wednesday, after a meeting with health experts and mayors.

                            • Pim Touber entered intensive care at the height of the pandemic. Like many other corona patients, he was overweight. It worsened his course of disease. "I've been on the edge." After weeks of respiration, he had to learn to walk again. Experts warn: corona once again shows that obesity poses a huge risk to public health.

"If we look at the people who ended up in intensive care during the first wave of the corona pandemic, more than three-quarters of the cases are people who are overweight or, even worse, obesity," says Liesbeth van Rossum, who as an internist. works at Erasmus MC and is a professor of obesity.
80 procent van de mensen die met corona op de intensive care belandt, heeft overgewicht. Die combinatie levert een groot risico op.
