    New coronavirus detected in sewage

    Publication date 03/25/2020 | 12:00

The new coronavirus (SARS severe acute respiratory syndrome -CoV coronavirus -2) has been found in Dutch sewage. This is evident from research by the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. Some patients with COVID-19 have the new coronavirus in their stools. That feces ends up in the sewer via the toilets. The research shows that monitoring of sewage water is a good method for diagnosing viral infections in infected people. Wastewater workers are protected against the virus if they adhere to hygiene regulations.

The new corona virus with DNA deoxyribonucleic acid techniques has been demonstrated in wastewater in Amsterdam, Tilburg and at the sewage treatment plant that also purifies the wastewater from Loon op Zand. A weekly sampling of waste water at Schiphol started on 17 February. The new coronavirus was not detected in these samples for the first two weeks. However, in the wastewater of March 2, 9 and 16, molecular detection methods were able to detect the genetic material of the virus. This was four days after the first person in the Netherlands had tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Wastewater was also sampled in Tilburg on 3, 10 and 17 March. Genetic material of the virus has been detected on all days. This was also within the first week after the first patients tested positive from February 27. Waste water was tested at the sewage treatment plant in Kaatsheuvel on 3 and 18 March. This installation purifies, among other things, the waste water from Loon op Zand, where the first reported COVID-19 patient lives in the Netherlands. The new coronavirus was not found in the sample taken on March 3, but the genetic material of the virus could be detected in the sample taken on March 18.

RIVM previously demonstrated the same technique with norovirus, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, polio virus and measles virus in wastewater.

    Protective measures
Previous research has shown that the protection measures for people who work with wastewater do not only protect against the known pathogens. These measures also work against the new corona virus. People working with wastewater should avoid direct contact with and swallowing and / or inhalation of wastewater mist. This means that they must wear personal protective equipment that suits the work. Think of protective outer clothing, gloves, boots, safety glasses, mask and / or face protection-FFP3. All these measures to work safely with waste water are in the Working Conditions Catalog of the water boards (opens in a new window). In addition, wastewater workers must observe hand hygiene and do not touch eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. And wash everyone's hands before eating and after every toilet, and sneezing or coughing in the elbow.

    COVID-19
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 outbreak in China in December 2019, the first patient in the Netherlands was tested positive on February 27, 2020. Some of the COVID-19 patients have diarrhea. And the new coronavirus is detected in feces in some of the infected individuals.

Possible flattening of number of new hospital admissions of patients with coronavirus

Recently, the number of newly admitted patients to the hospital has been an increasing curve. At the moment this seems to be leveling off. That may indicate a cautious decrease in the rate at which the virus is spreading. This is the first signal. We cannot draw firm conclusions from this. The next few days should show whether there is a real flattening.

With the figures of the number of hospital admissions, the speed of spread of the virus was calculated using mathematical models. The rate at which the virus is spreading also seems to be decreasing. Here too, it must become clear in the coming days whether the decline will continue.

Many deceased patients have also been reported today. However, these are reports of individuals who have died over the past few days. Deaths are not always immediately reported. Therefore, a new graph has now been included showing the number of deceased patients by day of death.

        Overview numbers
Total number of patients reported: 6412 (+852)
Total number of reported deceased patients: 356 (+80)
Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 1836 (+341)

Extension of data on the outbreak of the new coronavirus

The RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment is getting more and more information about the outbreak of the new coronavirus. For example, the current data from the NICE foundation has now also been included in the reports.

We present an overview of graphs and notifications daily in a PDF Portable Document Format.

          Overview numbers

Total number of patients tested positive: 7431 (+1019)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 434 (+78)

Total number of reported patients hospitalized (or have been): 2151 (+315)

          Explanation

The number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of deaths are increasing less quickly than you would expect without measures. This could indicate that the measures taken are affecting the rate of spread of the virus. These effects will be better explained at the end of this week or early next week.

Most people tested positive live in the province of Noord-Brabant, namely 2161 people. After that, most positively reported patients were reported in South Holland (1042) and North Holland (1029). In the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, there are the fewest infections with 71 and 72 people tested positive respectively.

Most of the deceased patients fall in the age category 80 - 84 years.

The basis for the number of confirmed patients admitted to the hospital and the deaths from COVID-19 are the reports of the GGDs. There is a delay between the day of death and the day that death is reported. The number of reported deaths per day therefore refers to deaths that occurred over several days.

Biggest increase to date: 117 more corona patients on ICU

There are currently 761 corona patients in intensive care, 117 more than yesterday. This is reported by the Dutch Association for Intensive Care. It is the largest increase yet.

A total of 925 ICU beds are currently available for corona patients. According to Minister De Jonge of Health, this can be extended to 1037 on April 1. All in all, there should be 1,612 ICU beds (except for corona patients, 575 for other patients).

Diederik Gommers of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care says to BNR Nieuwsradio that due to the sharp increase, the more than 1,600 ICU beds that have been released for next week are not enough. "The increase is very bad news. This means that we will be there in 3 days, instead of 6 or 7 days."

              Overview of the numbers
              • Total number of confirmed cases: 7431 (+1019)
              • Total number of reported deaths: 434 (+78)
              • Total number of confirmed cases who are or were admitted to hospital: 2151 (+315)
              Explanation

The number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of deceased patients are increasing less rapidly than would have been expected without measures in place. This could indicate that the measures taken are having an effect on how fast the virus is spreading. It will be possible to interpret these effects more clearly at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

The area with the highest number of confirmed cases is the province of Noord-Brabant, where 2161 people tested positive. After that, the most confirmed cases were reported in Zuid-Holland (1042) and Noord-Holland (1029). The provinces of Friesland and Drenthe reported the fewest COVID-19 infections: 71 and 72 respectively.

                Overview numbers

Total number of reported positive tested patients: 8603 (+1172)

Total number of reported patients hospitalized (or have been): 2500 (+349)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 546 (+112)

                Explanation

The number of reported people who died of COVID-19 is still increasing nationally. The number of reported new hospital admissions and Intensive Care admissions seems to be increasing less rapidly.

As reported yesterday, the number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of deaths are increasing less than you would expect without measures. If this line continues, it can be concluded in a few days whether the measures taken (keeping distance, limiting social contact, washing hands) are working.

The province with the most positively tested persons is still North Brabant with 2,488 persons. However, the number of new hospital admissions in this province is falling. After that, most positively tested patients were reported in South Holland (1249) and North Holland (1235). In these two provinces, the number of hospital admissions is increasing relatively quickly. This also applies to the province of Gelderland.

In the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, there are the least infections with 83 and 81 people tested positive.

80 percent of corona patients in ICU are also overweight

80 percent of all Dutch corona patients treated in intensive care are overweight. Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC), told the television show "Jinek" on Friday.

According to Gommers and Peter van der Voort, head of intensive care at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), there is "apparently" a link between obesity and COVID-19 complaints, although this cannot yet be said with certainty.

Van der Voort notes how many overweight people experience breathing problems after being infected with the coronavirus. Gommers suspects that this has to do with their "heavy chest, which makes it harder to breathe".

Similar reports were also reported to have come in from China.

                    Overview numbers

Total number of reported positive tested patients: 9762 (+1159)
Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 2,954 (+454)
Total number of reported deceased patients: 639 (+93)

                    Explanation
The number of reported new hospital admissions and Intensive Care Admissions is also increasing less rapidly today. The number of reported people who died of COVID-19 is lower than yesterday. Because not all patients can always be reported immediately, the reported numbers may differ slightly from the current situation.

Even today, the number of reported patients admitted to hospital and the number of reported deaths are increasing less than you would expect without measures.

If this line continues, it will be possible to conclude in a few days whether the measures taken are working.

The province with the most positively tested people is still North Brabant with a total of 2748 people. However, the number of new hospital admissions in this province is falling. After that, most patients tested positive were reported in South Holland (1508) and North Holland (1401). In the province of South Holland, the number of hospital admissions of positively tested patients is increasing faster than in other provinces.

In the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, there are still the fewest infections with 96 and 98 people tested positive.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese masks have been recalled from Dutch hospitals

A large part of the masks that the Dutch government has imported from China is inadequate.. Because the masks were already distributed to hospitals, the Ministry of Health has launched a recall.

This recall refers to almost half of a batch of 1.3 million so-called FFP2 masks, 600,000 pieces. Healthcare workers use it to treat critically ill patients with Covid-19 infection. Bad masks put doctors and nurses at risk.
Een grote partij mondmaskers die de overheid uit China heeft ge?mporteerd is niet veilig, blijkt na een keuring door TNO.

                        Overview numbers

Total number of patients tested positive: 10,866 (+1,104)
Total number of reported patients hospitalized (or have been): 3,483 (+529)
Total number of reported deceased patients: 771 (+132)

                        Explanation
As has been reported in recent days, the number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of deaths are increasing at a slower pace than you would expect without measures. In a few days' time, it will be possible to conclude whether there has been a real flattening of the number of hospitalized patients and the number of deaths among reported patients, and thus how well the measures taken are working.

Extension of data on the outbreak of the new coronavirus
The RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment is getting more and more information about the outbreak of the new coronavirus. The current data from the NICE foundation (National Intensive Care Evaluation) is also included in the reports.
About 100 new patients in intensive care (IC intensive care) are added every day. Because patients stay in IC for some time, the total number of patients in ICU in the Netherlands is currently increasing by about 80 per day.

The basis for the number of confirmed patients admitted to the hospital and the deaths from COVID-19 are the reports of the GGDs. There is a delay between the day of death and the day that death is reported. The number of deaths reported is therefore deaths that occurred over several days.

Total number of patients tested positive: 11,750 (+884)

Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 3990 (+507)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 864 (+93)

                          Explanation
As has been reported in recent days, the number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of reported deaths in the Netherlands are increasing less quickly than you would expect without measures. This week it will become clear whether there is a real flattening.

The declining trend in the number of hospital admissions continues in North Brabant. There are relatively many hospital admissions in South Holland, North Holland, Gelderland and Limburg. The number of hospital admissions is stable in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Flevoland and Zeeland.

RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment is receiving information about the outbreak of the new coronavirus from various sources. The data per day of the NICE foundation (National Intensive Care Evaluation) is also included in the Data coronavirus report.

These figures are updated several times a day by the NICE Foundation. The figures in this report are behind the current situation.

                            Deceased persons 1,039 ** (+175)

                            * The actual number of infections with the new coronavirus is higher than the number mentioned here. This is because not everyone is tested with possible contamination
** There is a delay between the day of death and the day that death is reported.

The corona card is changed as of today to the number of patients admitted

There are several ways to show the spread of COVID-19 in the Netherlands. The best data available at the moment is hospital admissions per municipality. Therefore, as of today, the number of people admitted to hospital can be seen on the map. The distribution shows the patients' place of residence.

                              Overview numbers

Total number of patients tested positive: 13,614 (+1,019)

Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 5,159 (+447)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 1,173 (+134)

                              Explanation

Today, 447 patients have been reported as hospitalized. 134 persons have been reported dead. These hospitalizations and deaths have occurred in recent days, but have been reported in the past 24 hours.

So far, two deaths have been reported from individuals under the age of 50, both with serious underlying health problems.

The numbers of reported hospital admissions and reports of death are lower today than yesterday. It is important to note that the number of reports per day is not the actual number of deaths or hospitalizations from the past day. This is because there is a delay between the time of death and hospitalization and the reporting of this to the GGDs.

The first effects of the measures seem to be visible. The number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of reported deaths in the Netherlands is increasing less quickly than you would expect without measures.

The trends in admissions per province have remained unchanged from yesterday. North Brabant seems to have passed the peak in the number of new hospital admissions. This is not yet visible in South Holland, North Holland, Gelderland and Limburg. The number of hospital admissions is stable in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Flevoland and Zeeland.

RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment receives information about the outbreak of the new coronavirus from various sources. The daily data of the NICE Foundation (National Intensive Care Evaluation) is also included in the report Data coronavirus in the Netherlands. These figures are continuously updated by the NICE Foundation. The figures in this report are therefore slightly behind the current situation.
