Monaco reported two new cases on Wednesday, April 8, taking the total number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus to 81. Ten are in hospital, and five in intensive care. Once again the Government pointed out that not all the cases involve residents of Monaco, since the Princess Grace Hospital also serves neighbouring communities.

In Italy, 542 new deaths were reported in the last full 24-hour period, down from the previous day by almost 70. In France, the figures were much more alarming with 11,059 new cases and 1,417 new deaths.
France is in recession and undergoing its sharpest slowdown since the Second World War, shrinking by six per cent in the first quarter of 2020 due to the economic impact of the pandemic.

The Monaco Government on Saturday announced two new coronavirus cases, taking the total since the start of the outbreak to 92. Eight are hospitalised and four in intensive care. Five patients, included in the total, have fully recovered.

The latest available figures show 4,694 new coronavirus cases and 619 new deaths in Italy, both increases on Friday’s figures, while in the US the daily death toll rose to 2,035 on Friday, with 777 deaths in New York alone. Italy has extended lockdown until May 3. PM Giuseppe Conte said he took the responsibility for doing so on his own shoulders. Italians have been in lockdown for one month, and the damage to the economy is anticipated to be seven percent of GDP.

In France, 7,120 new cases and 987 new deaths were reported on Friday, April 10. President Macron is expected to formally announce an extension of lockdown until at least May 3.

With the peak of the local coronavirus epidemic now seemingly passed, Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) is slowly returning to normal. Several medical staff have already left to help out in a hospital in Mulhouse, in eastern France, according to Beno?te de S?velinges, the director of CHPG.

Two of the specialised coronavirus units in Monaco have been stood down, but could be restarted in a few hours if the need arises, she told local French-language daily Monaco Matin.

During the coming week, from Monday, April 20, cardiology services and surgery will restart, although with special precautions. “We will consider that all patients are potentially carriers of the virus, so as to protect everyone,” the director said. Also, at this stage of getting back to some sort of normality, no visitors will be allowed for in-patients.
