Data analysis reflected that 5,000 deaths from COVID-19 were not registered in the CDMX
At least 5 thousand 59 deaths related to Covid-19 in Mexico City were not included in the official registry for April and May reported by the General Directorate of Epidemiology
    June 5, 2020

According to a study conducted by data scientists Sarah? Aguilar and Mois?s Arispe, published in Nexos, 7,198 deaths from April to 2020 in Mexico City are related to Covid-19, so there is a gap between the numbers reported by the federal government and the minutes that were recorded in the entity's Civil Registry.

The number of deaths in the capital related to Covid-19 represents 34 percent of reported deaths. However, the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health reported, for the same period, only 2,139.

The figure is three times higher than the number of the Directorate, and the daily deaths curve is "substantially higher" than the official one. However, as the study authors acknowledge, this discrepancy was explicitly anticipated by federal authorities.

This data comes from the analysis of 20,900 death certificates corresponding to April and May, the months of greatest activity of the pandemic, which were issued by courts 13, 14, 16, 18, 19 and 51 of the Public Registry of the Mexico City that remained open during the quarantine.

Overall, Covid-19 deaths are related to atypical pneumonia, viral pneumonia, and respiratory failure. According to the study, nine out of 10 reports related to "viral pneumonia" and four out of 10 related to "atypical pneumonia" are also linked to the mention of "COVID-19".

The month with the most registered deaths was May, with 12,228 compared to 8,672 in April. Of this total, 1 thousand 980 deaths in April and 5 thousand 218 in May are related to Covid-19.

May 18 would be the date with the highest death record, so it is established as the maximum point of the curve only in the period analyzed in the city.

The deaths caused by the virus that generated a health emergency in the country and a worldwide pandemic situation were recorded in the files with various terms such as "Coronavirus", "COVID," COVID19 "or" SARS-COV2 "despite refer the same cause of death. Deaths were also recorded under the label “possible COVID”.

Aguilar and Arispe's search and analysis method was inspired by research conducted by Mario Romero and Laurianne Despeghel, published in the same newspaper on May 25.

The authors of the study denounced that the database used by Romero and Despeghel was modified one day after the publication of their results, since to enter now a CAPTHA is required to validate the query. Data scientists managed to access the site using crowdworkers and issuing access requests every five seconds.

The study presented in late May by Romero and Despeghel aimed to determine the increase in mortality caused by the health crisis, and estimated that between January and May 2020, 8,772 death certificates were issued more than the average of the four previous years.

Due to the delay in the integration of data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (the latest statistic available on deaths is from 2018), both studies opted for the revision of the death certificates available in the open data of the Civil Registry of the Mexico City.
