Ciudad Ju?rez— Despite the fact that workers assure that at least six Covid-19 outbreaks have been registered in the Ciudad Ju?rez maquiladoras, the State Government and the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) stopped reporting on April 29 the infections and deaths that belong to the industrial sector.

According to both authorities, the agreement is that all the information about Covid-19 in the state of Chihuahua flow through the Ministry of Health. However, the requests for information made by El Diario and other media about the maquiladora workers are ignored by the Department of Social Communication of the State Government during the daily press conferences that are offered virtually to publicize progress on the situation of the new coronavirus in Chihuahua.

"Of the deceased, 13 patients belong to Lear Corporativo", reported on Tuesday April 14 the head of IMSS Medical Benefits, Humberto Campos Favela, while on Wednesday April 19 Dr. Arturo Valenzuela Zorrilla, medical director in the North Zone The state of Chihuahua updated the figure to 17 workers and nine more sick.

Since then, employees of different assembly plants have assured that dozens more have lost their lives, but the information has not been updated. They have also reported that a large number of cases have been certified as pneumonia, respiratory problems and possible Covid.

    Avoid questioning

On May 6, this medium requested the information and Dr. Valenzuela Zorrilla, stressed the importance of knowing the figure and assured that the IMSS had not updated them, but that it would request it to make it known the next day.

On Thursday, May 7, the question was insisted on and the response from the Communication Department was that "it is information from the IMSS", so they did not ask Dr. Valenzuela Zorrilla the question.

On May 11, El Diario returned to request information on the outbreaks in the maquiladora sector, on the 12th it insisted on the numbers of sick, deceased and outbreaks, but on both occasions the questions about the maquiladoras made by the reporters of this medium stopped be transmitted to the epidemiologist Gumaro Barrios and the medical director in the Northern Zone.

On Friday, May 15, the lack of information regarding the sector, whose reopening date until yesterday was not established, was questioned again. But once again the State Government's Social Communication omitted the question, just like the previous times.

Last May 26, the question about the outbreaks in the maquiladoras and public complaints from workers at at least six plants was sent directly to the Director of Communication in the State, Manuel del Castillo, but was once again ignored.

On the same Tuesday, Governor Javier Corral Jurado assured that the institute had not updated the data, so the request for information from the IMSS was insisted, which through its Social Communication area assured that said data will be informed by the Ministry of Health.

Yesterday, the number of sick maquiladora workers killed by Covid-19 was asked once again, as well as the outbreaks found in the plants. Without the questions passing the Social Communication filter.

    Lear tops the numbers

According to the workers, during the health contingency, at least 30 people have died in only three maquiladoras: 14 in Lear R?o Bravo, ten in Compa??a Armadora S.A. from the American corporate Regal (Regal Casa), in the Waterfill industrial park and six more in Syncreon Borderland, in the Salv?rcar industrial park.

They have also denounced the outbreaks in Electrolux, Foxconn and Electrocomponentes, as well as the names of their former colleagues killed in maquiladoras such as Honeywell, in the Las Fuentes industrial complex; Becton Dickson (BD), in the Aeropuerto industrial park; Foxconn, in the Intermex industrial park; Johnson & Johnson Las Torres, Tyco Electronics and Electrocomponentes de M?xico.

Deaths in the maquiladora sector do not add up to 17, as reported by the IMSS through the State Health Secretary, the labor lawyer Susana Prieto Terrazas claimed on May 18, during a demonstration in which dozens of maquiladora workers participated to require their companies to respect quarantine with their full salary until the health authorities establish the end of the health contingency by Covid-19.

"That is the most outrageous thing yet, workers hear that the state health secretary says that 17 have died in the maquiladora, but if Lear has more than 30! Lear has more than 30! Why do they want to cover the sun with a finger? Regal has 10 direct and three indirect, they have six in Syncreon, they have seven in Electrolux, they have 10 in Electrocomponentes de M?xico, they have nine in Foxconn Santa Teresa, they have six in Foxconn Las Torres, they have two or more in Toro Company, they have one in Columbus. And the dead continue to fall and the contagion curve is never going to be planned, because they have not suspended, for that reason, the quarantine, "the lawyer told El Diario, after assuring that there are more than 200 victims in the maquiladoras.

"We are very angry and very dismayed that in the official figures of Ciudad Ju?rez they are saying that there are only 17 deaths by the maquila industry, because those deaths are only learned by Lear, but then by Toro, by Syncreon, by Regal, Continental, Commscope, Foxconn, where are they? They must not deceive the world. We know there are more. There is a lot of consternation, why do they want to reduce the number of deaths? ”Veronica, a Regal worker, claimed days ago.

"Who do they want to deceive? Only we contribute to these nine figures," he said before the company's 10th victim died, according to the employees themselves.

According to the operator, at the beginning "some relatives did not accept it, they were afraid of being singled out, that society would see them as plagued ... in addition, the IMSS was not giving the certificates and the opinion did not say he died for Covid or he died by coronavirus, they say respiratory deficiency, atypical pneumonia. "

The Journal has collected at least five testimonies about workers whose causes of death have been certified as pneumonia or possible Covid.
