May 10, 2020
The Ministry of Health (SSa) reported this Saturday, May 9, that the accumulated COVID-19 infections are 33,460. Furthermore, since the beginning of the epidemic, Mexico has suffered 3,353 fatalities.
Jos? Luis Alom?a, General Director of Epidemiology, reported that today's evening conference is number 71, and that 48 days have passed since the National Day of Healthy Distance.
On the international scene, confirmed and active cases (from April 26 to May 9) by region, according to the World Health Organization, are concentrated in the Americas: 589,333 cases or 51.2 percent. Europe registers 381,625 cases or 33.2 percent. The total number of confirmed cases worldwide is 3,855,812, but those confirmed in the last 14 days are 1,150,146 or 30 percent. The global case fatality rate remains at 6.9 percent.
In the country there are 8,283 confirmed active cases, which represent the active epidemic in the country. There are 73,801 negative cases, 20,887 suspects, and a total of 128,148 people studied.
Among the confirmed cases accumulated by federative entity of residence as of May 9, most are concentrated in Mexico City with 9,218, the State of Mexico with 5,710, and Baja California with 2,365. The smallest number of cases are in Zacatecas with 140, Durango with 109, and Colima with 38.
The entities with the highest number of active epidemics are Mexico City with 2,152 cases, the State of Mexico with 1,179, and Tabasco with 388. Campeche and Zacatecas with 59, Baja California Sur and Durango with 37, and Colima with 9 are the least.
The incidence rate of active cases in the country per 100,000 inhabitants is 6.48. The highest rates are found in Mexico City, Tabasco, and Morelos. The minors in Durango, Oaxaca, and Colima.
In the distribution of accumulated deaths by date, there are 252 suspicious deaths that may or may not become confirmed. The upward trend hasn't changed since April 25 or 26, Alomy said.
Most of the deaths in the country have been registered in Mexico City, Baja California, and the State of Mexico. The minors in San Luis Potos?, Durango, and Colima.
The confirmed and suspicious cases show what is the trend of the epidemic curve at the national level, “remembering that each of the regions that have been prioritized for having the greatest burden, among all are contributing and adding to this national curve, but each of them it has a temporality, a magnitude, and a different slope ”, reported Alom?a.
The epidemic curve of total cases of COVID-19 in Mexico reports that 1,939 new confirmed cases were registered in the last 24 hours, an increase of 6.1% the previous day.
Regarding occupation and hospital availability as of May 8, the IRAG Network reported that there are 13,917 IRAG beds available and 7,025 (34%) occupied. There are 687 reporting hospitals, but only 660, 96%, notified the system.
The availability of general hospital beds is 27% in Mexico City, 41% in Baja California, and 46% in the State of Mexico. The highest availability is in San Luis Potos? with 95%, Quer?taro with 96%, and Colima with 97 percent. “These are proportions that have been maintained and are given based on how many patients, each day, leave and vacate the bed. Also with the hospital restructuring and expansion works that are being implemented nationwide, "said Alomia.
Among the availability of ventilated beds for critically ill patients, there is 59% occupancy in Mexico City, 52% in the State of Mexico, and 48% in Sinaloa. The lowest percentages are Aguascalientes and Durango with 7%, Jalisco and Zacatecas with 6%, and Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Sonora with 5 percent.
At the press conference this Friday, Hugo L?pez-Gatell, Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, reported that the five cities with the highest transmission intensity in the country are Mexico City, Villahermosa in Tabasco, Canc?n in Quintana Roo , Culiac?n in Sinaloa, and Tijuana in Baja California.
L?pez-Gatell stated that in the COVID-19 epidemic and in other diseases of epidemiological interest there is not a single epidemic curve. In small countries where there is "high" population density or physical proximity between cities, for example, the epidemic can be synchronized throughout an entire territory, he reported.
"But in large countries like Mexico, the United States, Brazil, Russia, China, and India, it is as if they were multiple countries in the sense that each city, sometimes each state, synchronizes an epidemic by itself, but the dates are different occurrence compared to others, "he added.
The undersecretary reaffirmed that this dynamic is “very good news” because it allows efforts to be focused on the five cities with the highest transmission intensity.
