  • Rome. Covid outbreak at San Raffaele with 99 positives and 5 deaths is worrying

The balance of the cluster rises a few days ago to the Roman IRCCS specialized in rehabilitation. Two deaths in the last 24h referring to the cluster, it is an 89-year-old woman from San Raffaele Pisana who died at the Gemelli Polyclinic and an 82-year-old woman who also came from the Pisana facility and died at the Celio military hospital .

JUNE 12 - The Covid epidemic is recording a growth in cases in Lazio in the last few days due mainly to the outbreak detected at the IRCCS San Raffaele alla Pisana in the capital.

Of the new positive cases reported Friday at regional level, 22 are in fact attributable to the cases of San Raffaele, the institute specialized in rehabilitation for several days at the center of the attention of the health authorities.

The outbreak today reached 99 positive with 5 related deaths. Two deaths in the last 24h referring to the cluster, it is an 89-year-old woman from San Raffaele Pisana who died at the Gemelli Polyclinic and an 82-year-old woman who also came from the Pisana facility and died at the Celio military hospital .

The epidemiological investigation will go backwards from 1 May and the first 200 patients discharged from the facility at the drive-ins to carry out serological tests have already been called. Attention remains very high and the positive patients have all been transferred. Activities for serological tests on health workers and law enforcement agencies continue.

Coronavirus in Rome: contagions at San Raffaele and Garbatella, what happens

The situation of the outbreak of the IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana in Rome is becoming increasingly critical. The infection started by the rehabilitation institute has reached 104 overall cases of positivity and 5 deaths. 'And we fear that they are destined to increase,' said the Lazio Region Covid-19 Crisis Unit. 'Attention remains very high and the positive patients have all been transferred', continues the Regional Councilor for Health, Alessio D’Amato.

Even today, cases related to San Raffaele are recorded. And they are 5: 2 in the ASL Roma 1 (these are technicians from the Rai Center in Saxa Rubra, where 70 tests were performed); two others in the ASL Roma 3 and one last in RM6 (a health worker from the rehabilitation institute). The first infections emerged on June 4: 3 positive. But given the strategic importance and size of the Pisan Irccs (300 inpatients and 450 health workers and not) it immediately became clear that they were not destined to stop there. The confirmation comes already the next day, when the patients of Covid-19 rise to 7 and an elderly guest of the structure, owned by the family of the deputy Antonio Angelucci, dies. And the IRCCS is isolated, closed by a sanitary cordon that blocks new acceptances and manned by the military.

?This outbreak did not take us and all our efforts are now linked to the protection of patients and operators. Then we will do all the checks at the completion of the epidemiological investigation - so the commissioner D’Amato -. I must not let down on guard I have been saying this for days, attention must be kept high. A possible index case among operators emerges from the framework provided by the ASL Roma 3 and we expect a further increase in the cases ?.

On 6 June the numbers confirm the validity of the concern that grows around the Pisan cluster: 31 the total number of patients, 9 employees, two family members and 20 patients. The next day 4 others. And a second patient dies. The epidemiological investigation conducted by the ASL Roma 3 and Seresmi by Spallanzani indicates as a possible index case a physiotherapist who fell ill in the first days of May. Hence the decision to recall all the patients who have been discharged since the 18th of the month, their family members and the closest contacts. By activating two drive test stations for serological tests and swabs, one at the former Forlanini hospital and another at the Casal Bernocchi health center, he literally stormed: 1,800 clinical tests that are carried out in a few hours.

In the following two days, the infection spreads and reaches the province of Rieti, where the third victim and several positive cases among his relatives and closest friends are registered, and also the Policlinico Umberto I: a nurse from the Tropical Diseases department falls ill (who had had contacts with a San Raffaele health worker, who was also infected), a colleague and a patient.

In 48 hours it reaches 68 total positivity. Meanwhile, the work of tracing the contacts and the tests continue: in two days 2,332 swabs and over 2,500 serological tests are carried out. On June 11 other 9 cases emerge. While yesterday another 22, which bring the total to 99. Among them two health workers and 14 patients (later transferred to Spallanzani) were discovered with swabs made for the second time within five days within the health facility . At the first molecular test last week they were all negative. Always connected to the Pisana cluster, two other deaths that bring the total number of victims to five. ASL 3 has decided to extend the epidemiological investigation backwards, starting from all those discharged from May 1, their relatives and their contacts.

While trying to stem the contagion at San Raffaele, another delicate situation emerges in the capital: at the Garbatella, in a busy building in Piazza Attilio Pecile, there is an entire family of Peruvian origin positive for coronavirus. The first to be infected would have been the youngest child in the family, now hospitalized - in good condition - in the Covid center of Palidoro of the Bambino Ges? pediatric hospital. in the building, now in quarantine and manned by law enforcement. One hundred and seven people tested: 9 infected were reported to have emerged from the first results. The fear is that what happened in April at the Selam Palace on the Collatina will repeat itself, where there were 50 cases.
