DUBLIN — Ireland’s prime minister ordered citizens to stay home until April 12 to help slow the spread of coronavirus, telling them they can only leave to shop for groceries, for brief individual physical exercise or to make family visits that are essential.

Almost all shops will be shut, all public gatherings outside of household units prohibited completely, and those over the age of 70 or with chronic diseases will be told to stay in their homes completely.

These “radical actions” were aimed at saving as many lives as possible, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.

Varadkar had earlier warned that Ireland’s intensive care units would be at capacity within a few days given the rate of spread of coronavirus. Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland rose to 2,121 on Friday from 1,819 a day ago, with 22 deaths...

ICU units nearly at capacity. Intensive care units across Ireland could be at full capacity within days, according to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, as the Republic registered 2,615 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 36 deaths as of Sunday (29 March). The PM also said over the weekend that he would be surprised, judging by the figures, if the death rate in the country stayed below 1,000 people.

Meanwhile, the first supply of medical equipment from China landed in Ireland on Sunday. The Irish government has agreed on a €208 million deal with the Chinese for the provision of such equipment, which will be transported to the country on 10 Aer Lingus flight

THE HEALTH Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has reported that there have been at least 22 coronavirus 'clusters' identified in nursing homes across the country, raising fears for both the residents and health care workers.

The most up-to-date data was released this morning and has shown a worrying number of cluster cases in vulnerable institutions such as nursing homes (22) and hospitals (19).

'Clusters' are characterised by any more than two coronavirus cases being linked together-- last week, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said the average number of cases in each identified cluster was between 5 and 6.

An analysis report released today by the HPSC has revealed that there were a total of 103 identified clusters in the Republic of Ireland as of midnight, March 27, resulting in 379 confirmed cases.
