The first case of the coronavirus has been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.

The patient is a male in the eastern part of the country, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

It said he is currently receiving appropriate medical care,.

The case is associated with travel from an affected area in northern Italy, rather than contact with another confirmed case in Ireland.

The patient was identified and tested in line with established protocols for the investigation of suspected cases of Covid-19.

A "drive-through" coronavirus testing centre is in operation at Antrim Area Hospital.

The facility allows patients referred by a GP to be tested in their vehicle.

Meanwhile churches have recommended changes to services, including stopping physical interaction.

The case is associated with travel from an affected area in northern Italy, rather than contact with another confirmed case.

A Dublin school with 400 pupils is to close for two weeks after one of its students was confirmed as having the coronavirus.

Ireland's chief medical officer says the action is linked to the country's first confirmed case.

        snip...
A secondary school in Dublin has been closed for 14 days due to concerns over coronavirus.

A male student has the virus and is being treated in a Dublin hospital with infection-control measures.

The National Public Health Emergency Team said that a risk assessment determined that "all pupils and teachers are being treated as close contacts of the confirmed case".

A woman from Northern Ireland was diagnosed with the virus on Thursday.

Two days later the first case of the coronavirus was confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.

Both had travelled home from an affected area in Italy.

Over 60 staff at Irish hospital in self isolation over coronavirus - RTE

DUBLIN (Reuters) - More than 60 staff at a hospital in the Irish city of Cork were asked on Friday to self-isolate after the country’s first community transmission of coronavirus was found there, an Irish health official was quoted as saying.

Health authorities in Ireland reported the first case of the virus not associated with travel from an affected area of Italy on Thursday as the number of cases rose to 13 from six a day earlier.

The male patient who contracted the virus is in the hospital in Cork, where his diagnosis was made a number of days after admission, which the chief medical officer said gave rise to the potential of contact with health workers...
