DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Appearing before the cameras coughing and sweating profusely, the man leading Iran's response to the new coronavirus outbreak promised it was of no danger to his country.
"Quarantines belong to the Stone Age," Iraj Harirchi insisted.
A day later, he himself would be in quarantine from the virus...
Iran has temporarily released 85,000 prisoners as the coronavirus crisis escalates in the region.
Its judiciary minister Gholamhossein Esmaili announced the decision on Monday.
Political prisoners are reportedly among those released. It is unclear whether Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian dual citizen detained in Iran since 2016, is among them.
Over 14,000 people in Iran had infected the COVID-19 virus as of Monday, with over 850 deaths.
The Iranian government has temporarily released 85,000 prisoners in an emergency move to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Gholamhossein Esmaili, Iran's judiciary minister, on Tuesday said: Some 50% of those released are security-related prisoners... also in the jails we have taken precautionary measures to confront the outbreak," Sky News reported.

Iran: Coronavirus death toll rises to 1,556
ANKARA
A total of 123 people in Iran have died of coronavirus over the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 1,556, said Iranian health officials on Saturday.
A Health Ministry statement said 966 new virus cases were found, raising the number of cases to 20,610.
A total of 7,635 people who were treated for the virus have been discharged from hospitals to date, it added.

An infectious disease expert has warned of a "disaster" in Iran if the authorities failed to impose a travel ban during Nowruz, the Persian New Year holiday, to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Highlighting that the virus was spreading in Iran even faster than China, Masoud Mardani of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences said the authorities were slow to respond to the outbreak.
"The pandemic has spread to other cities from Qom because the city could not be isolated in a timely manner," said Mardani, who is also a member of the Iranian coronavirus science council.
He said between 100-150 people die and thousands get infected with the virus every day in Iran.
Mardani, however, claimed that the daily data announced by the country’s Health Ministry includes only the cases recorded in hospitals.
"The real figures could be higher than the official numbers," he said...

A total of 139 people in Iran have died due to the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll up to 2,517, health officials announced on Saturday.
Health Ministry spokesperson Kianoush Jahanpour said 3,076 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 35,408.
