Iceland employs detective work, testing and quarantine in coronavirus fight
"We are using science and the best evidence there is," Iceland’s health director, Dr. Alma Moeller, says.

By Willem Marx and Mac William Bishop

REYKJAVIK, Iceland — Gestur Palmason has spent the past few weeks running down leads and profiling suspects, but those whom the veteran police detective is chasing aren’t criminals, they are coronavirus carriers.

The 40-year-old with a shaved head is part of a team of “contact tracers” operating at Iceland’s National Crisis Coordination Center, the high-pressure heart of this small country’s singular strategy to combat COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

“Every second somebody is getting infected, so obviously we want as few people infected as we possibly can,” he told NBC News. “As quickly as we can, we have to reach everyone that might have been in contact with someone who’s positive, and try to stop them before they get in contact with more people.”...

Fear of Iceland Statement: Half of our Coronavirus Cases Show No Symptoms
      By Daniel Kucher -
      March 27, 2020

Iceland’s Ministry of Health announced that half of the people who tested positive for the corona virus test did not show the virus symptoms as a result of their corona virus test study. This statement is a harbinger that many infected people unknowingly make others sick.

Most of the countries struggling with the coronavirus outbreak cannot test everyone because there are not enough tests. However, Iceland has managed to apply a coronavirus test to a significant part of its population.

According to the statement made by the Ministry of Health of Iceland, 12,615 coronavirus tests were performed in the country with 364,000 inhabitants until 25 March. The coronavirus tests of 802 people tested were positive. Although the number of tests seems low at first, it is not low compared to the population of the country. Because Iceland has tested 3.4% of the entire population. If the total number of people testing tests we wanted to apply the same rate in Turkey would find a population of 2 million 822 thousand...

Violations of Iceland’s current quarantine and gathering ban regulations will now be punishable with fines of ISK 50,000 – 500,000 [€323 – 3,239; $359 – 3,585]. The new penalties were announced on Friday in an order issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The fines will be levied throughout Iceland “for violations of the Minister of Health’s rules related to the gathering ban, the closure of public meeting places and activities, as well as on the isolation of those infected [with COVID-19] and quarantine.”

‘We’re just going to have to have bad hair for the next few weeks’

While the regulations on large gatherings have mostly been observed, however, police say not everyone is taking the regulations seriously enough. “There are way too many reports about people in quarantine who are going out to the shops,” remarked V??ir Reynisson, the Manager of the Police Commissioner’s Civil Protection and Emergency Management Division, during a press conference on Friday. Proper distancing protocols are not always being followed in shops, either, he continued, and they have indication that individuals in certain service professions, such as hairdressers, have continued to cut hair from their homes.

“Come on—we haven’t put this ban in place for no reason,” V??ir sighed. “We’re just going to have to have bad hair for the next few weeks. We just have to live with it.”

The husband of the 71-year-old Icelandic woman with asthma who died from COVID-19 on Monday March 23rd—the first Icelander to do so—is seriously ill, Stundin reports. The 75-year-old man has been put on a respirator in Landsp?tali hospital. He has had no other health complications so far.
        Sincere and strong words

Their son posted on Facebook on Tuesday, saying goodbye to his mother, and imploring people to learn from his experience. “It’s time for this nation and its citizens to take this seriously and stop acting like idiots,” he wrote.

President Gu?ni Th. J?hannesson sent a sincere greeting to the family. In addition, he urged people to exercise caution, and listen to the experts. “We are dealing with a threat to people’s lives and health. The most important thing is to protect those who are the weakest,” he said. “We must follow all the recommendations and instructions in every way. And we trust in our accomplished staff in the health care system. They all deserve many thanks for their work on these difficult days.”

Chief of Police V??ir Reynisson had strong words for those who disregarded public safety instructions. “It’s really important, what we are focusing on, that people obey this. We are not kidding. These numbers are really serious. People must take this seriously.”

Almost a hundred people have signed up to provide relief assistance on farms across the country, V?sir reports. The initiative, launched by the Farmers Association of Iceland (B?), will send temporary workers to help farmers who have fallen ill with COVID-19 and are unable to maintain their farms. At time of writing, six farmers in the Vestur-H?nvatnss?sla district in Northwest Iceland have contracted the virus.

“Almost a hundred people are on our list,” remarked Gu?bj?rg J?nsd?ttir, the B? project manager. “I’m really touched at how the country is thinking about farmers and is ready to help. There are people who have experience and knowledge and have an education in agriculture and then also those who have lost their jobs in the tourism sector and then working consultants—all really decent folk from all over the country.”

At this time, the infected farmers in Northwest Iceland have been able to continue maintaining their farms with the help of family members or workers from nearby farms. It’s not yet known what other farms have been affected by COVID-19, but by having a list of volunteers in place, B? is hoping to circumvent further disruptions in the agricultural sector as the virus continues to spread.

The mayor says her small town has received a major blow as most people there knew and liked the couple.

Thorolfur Gudnason, the epidemiologist, says it is gratifying to see that the infection with the coronary virus has decreased today since yesterday. However, it cannot be read from the conclusion that the peak of the epidemic has been reached.

"You wonder if this is a significant reduction, but I think it's too early to say that. The next few days will determine whether or not we have reached the top. It would be as good as it was, "Thorolf said at today's public defense meeting.

"About 5 percent of the population is quarantined or has been quarantined, which is a pretty incredible proportion. Work is currently underway on the implementation of a ban on assembly after the current ban ends on May 4 and the reception of tourists to the country over the next few weeks.
