PARIS — France’s only aircraft carrier has confirmed 50 cases of the virus aboard and is heading back to port.

The French military says three of those aboard the Charles de Gaulle with the virus have been flown to a French hospital for treatment. Medics are staying aboard to track the infections and prevent further spread among the 1,700 crew after 50 of the 66 tests were positive.

U.S. aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt experienced a similar outbreak, leading to a major controversy after its captain was fired.

Amid suspicions of an outbreak aboard the Charles de Gaulle, a medical team equipped with tests was flown to the French aircraft carrier on Wednesday while it was on a mission in the Atlantic Ocean.

(CNN)Four US military personnel that were assigned to a French aircraft carrier that experienced an outbreak of the coronavirus have been placed into quarantine in France, two US defense officials tell CNN.

The officials said it is unclear whether the sailors have been tested for the virus but said that they appear to be "in good health" and "are being treated well" by the French military.
France's Ministry for the Armed Forces said in a statement Sunday that the nuclear powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which has 50 confirmed coronavirus cases on board, arrived in its home port of Toulon on Sunday afternoon and has begun to quarantine personnel who are to be confined to military bases for 14 days.
The presence of US personnel aboard the aircraft carrier has not been previously reported. It is common for US personnel to serve on allied ships in order to bolster interoperability between allied militaries. The US Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.... https://us.cnn.com/2020/04/14/politi...rus/index.html

Two US sailors on French carrier test positive for coronavirus

BY REBECCA KHEEL - 04/15/20 12:08 PM EDT
Two U.S. sailors aboard a French aircraft carrier have tested positive for the coronavirus, the U.S. Navy said Wednesday.

Those sailors are “receiving excellent host nation medical care at French facilities,” the Navy said in a news release.

“We are working closely with our NATO ally to fight against the virus, and we are confident that our sailors are in good hands,” the Navy said. “We look forward to continued operations with the Charles de Gaulle and the French Navy in the future.”

Four U.S. sailors in total were serving aboard the FS Charles de Gaulle as part of the Navy’s personnel exchange program meant to strengthen relationships and communication with U.S. partners and allies.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier returned to its home port of Toulon on Sunday about 10 days ahead of schedule after the French Ministry for the Armed Forces confirmed at least 50 COVID-19 cases aboard the ship....https://thehill.com/policy/defense/4...or-coronavirus

PARIS (Reuters) - Nearly 700 sailors assigned to the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle’s naval group have tested positive for the coronavirus, the armed forces ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry said 1,767 mariners, nearly all from the Charles de Gaulle itself, had been tested and results showed at least 668 to be infected with the new coronavirus. Results are still not in from a third of the tests.

PARIS (AP) — The French navy is investigating how the coronavirus infected more than 1,000 sailors aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, amid growing pressure on government leaders to explain how it could have happened.

The ship, France's biggest carrier and the flagship of its navy, is undergoing a lengthy disinfection process since returning to its home base in Toulon five days ago.

One person remains in intensive care and some 20 others hospitalized, navy spokesman Cmdr. Eric Lavault told The Associated Press.
