  • England - 2019-nCov cases - 136,873 cases; 28,657 deaths

Two people in England have been diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus.

The patients are members of the same family and are the first English people to be diagnosed with it on British soil.

Until today, at least 161 people had tested negative for the virus but none had been diagnosed with it.

The infection makes England the 23rd country or territory outside of China to declare the infection has spread there.

The Department of Health said it would not reveal any details of who the patients are or where they are being looked after.

It did, however, confirm that they are not in Wirral, Merseyside, where people being evacuated from the centre of the outbreak will be quarantined later today

Typical UK - refusing to say where they are. Very helpful.

Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, statement about cases of novel coronavirus in England.

Published 31 January 2020 From: Department of Health and Social Care

We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus. The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus.

The NHS is extremely well-prepared and used to managing infections and we are already working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread.

We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately. We are continuing to work closely with the World Health Organization and the international community as the outbreak in China develops to ensure we are ready for all eventualities.

LONDON (Reuters) - The first two people in Britain to be diagnosed with the new coronavirus are being treated in a hospital in Newcastle, northeast England, Britain’s health ministry said on Friday.

England’s chief medical officer had previously said he would not give the location of the two patients, both from the same family, while medics attempted to contact other people they might have spread the infection to.

Yorkshire student with coronavirus has not been on campus since being exposed to the virus, university says

              02 02 2020

University officials have moved to reassure the community in York after it emerged one of the first two people to test positive for coronavirus is a student in the city.

The unnamed student has not been on campus since being infected and was not there in the period beforehand either, a spokesman for the University of York confirmed on Saturday evening.

He stressed the risk to staff and students is therefore low.

The pair - who are related - remain the only two confirmed cases in Britain of coronavirus, which has killed more than 250 people in China.

The UK now has three confirmed cases of coronavirus, while five Britons are in hospital in France after contracting the disease.

A student has been told to self-isolate for 14 days following a confirmed case of coronavirus in Brighton.

In a message sent to parents on Friday, Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) said: "As I am sure many of you are aware, media outlets reported on Thursday of a first confirmed case of the coronavirus in Brighton.

"We are working in collaboration with and being guided by the local authority and Public Health England to ensure that we at PACA are acting consistently with the right medical advice.

"Today we have been contacted by a parent of a student at PACA who was contacted by Public Health England as part of their investigation concerning the confirmed case that was reported in the press yesterday.

"We have been informed by the parent that they have been advised by Public Health England to self-isolate their child at home for 14 days. If at any point the child is found to be symptomatic we will be notified."
