Denmark - Mink Farms Affected by Coronavirus: June 17 - September 14, 2020
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has found COVID-19 in another North Jutland mink farm. The herd is subject to stricter restrictions to avoid the spread of infection.
Press release , Published: August 26, 2020
As part of the government's monitoring of all Danish mink farms for COVID-19, the mink farmers regularly submit mink for testing. Last week, the Statens Serum Institut found signs of COVID-19 in mink, which a mink farmer had submitted from four different herds.
This week, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has taken new samples in the four mink farms. The test results show that there was COVID-19 in one of the farms, while no virus could be detected in the other three mink farms.
All four mink farms are still subject to stricter restrictions to avoid the spread of infection.
Stricter restrictions mean, among other things, that everyone who comes to the mink farm must wear special protective equipment, take a shower and wash their clothes after they have been inside the farm, says emergency manager Nikolas Hove K?hn from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. For the infected herd, we also demand that the enclosure be thoroughly inspected and that a "number of men" be kept over the minks on a daily basis.
Since June, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has been responsible for COVID-19 monitoring of the mink farms. In June, a sample survey among 125 mink herds, corresponding to 10% of Danish mink farms, showed no findings of COVID-19. In July, the government launched a monitoring, which means that all Danish mink farmers must submit dead mink for COVID-19 testing. At the same time, it is now a legal requirement that everyone who travels in mink herds uses protective equipment and draws up a detailed plan for infection protection.
With the surveillance strategy and the stricter restrictions for infected mink farms, the government finds it justifiable to let infected herds live, as the risk of infection spreading is minimal.

In collaboration with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, the Statens Serum Institut has found COVID-19 in a mink farm in Hirtshals Municipality. It is the sixth mink farm in Denmark, which has been found positive for COVID-19.
"To avoid infection outside the mink farm, we have, as with the other infected farms, put an iron ring around it. We did this already when we suspected the infection. The farm is now subject to strict restrictions. For example, visitors must wear special protective equipment, take a shower and wash their clothes after they have been inside the farm, "says Nikolas Hove, emergency manager at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
He says that the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has gone through the mink farm's enclosure to minimize the risk of mink escaping. In addition, the mink owner must count his mink daily to document that no one has run away.
Since July, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has monitored Denmark's almost 1,200 mink farms for COVID-19. This is done as part of the government's strategy to ensure close COVID-19 monitoring of the farms.
Today, it is a legal requirement that everyone who travels in mink herds wear protective equipment and that herd owners draw up a detailed plan for infection protection.
With the monitoring strategy and the stricter restrictions for infected mink farms, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the health authorities assess that it is justifiable to let infected herds live because the risk of spreading infection to humans is minimal.
In future, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will not send out press releases on individual finds of COVID-19 in Danish mink farms. Herds with confirmed infection will instead be published regularly on F?devarestyrelsen.dk
