The passengers have all been in quarantine in their cabins since the 3rd Feb 2020 i.e 14 days ago, yet new cases are being detected daily and clinical data shows a mean incubation period IRO 3 -5 days. So either staff, food are transmitting or perhaps they need to consider airborne transmission, especially if air is being circulated around the ship. Otherwise how is this happening?

88 more people test positive for COVID-19 on Diamond Princess cruise ship
        18 Feb 2020 12:52PM
        (Updated: 18 Feb 2020 06:21PM)

TOKYO: Another 88 people aboard a cruise ship off Japan have tested positive for COVID-19, authorities said Tuesday (Feb 18).

The new cases take the total number of confirmed cases on the Diamond Princess to 542 - the biggest cluster outside the epicentre in China.

The patients will be sent to specialised hospitals, Japan's health ministry said in a statement. Sixty-five of those who tested positive were not yet showing symptoms.

The government earlier on Tuesday said all passengers and crew aboard the ship were tested for the coronavirus...

Quarantined cruise ship in Japan became incubator for virus

          By ASSOCIATED PRESS

          | UPDATED: 14:29 EST, 18 February 2020

TOKYO (AP) - As an extraordinary two-week quarantine of a cruise ship ends Wednesday in Japan, many scientists say it was a failed experiment: The ship seemed to serve as an incubator for the new virus from China instead of an isolation facility meant to prevent the worsening of an outbreak.

Since the virus was identified late last year in central China, it has sickened tens of thousands of people and killed more than 1,800.

As of Tuesday, 542 cases of the virus, known as COVID-19, have been identified among the 3,711 quarantined passengers and crew, making the ship the site of the most infections outside of China. The Diamond Princess cruise ship is also the only place where health officials have seen the disease spread efficiently beyond China.

          The question now is: Why?

The Japanese government has repeatedly defended the effectiveness of the quarantine. But some experts suggest it may have been less than rigorous.

In a possible sign of lax quarantine protocols, three Japanese health officials who helped in the quarantine checks on the ship were also infected..."Given how the virus has continued to spread, we have to presume everyone leaving the ship is potentially infected, and therefore they have to go through another two-week quarantine period," he said. "Not to do so would be reckless."...https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap...tor-virus.html

Not sure if this has been posted previously

Professor Iwata Kentaro MD, MSc, PhD of Kobe University, Shindai ? Division of Infectious Diseases.

He made it onboard the Diamond Princess eventually and saw no proper infection control measures at all. When he tried to implement proper protocol he was made not welcome. He now fears he may himself be infected and is self quarantining.

              (404) 639-3286 Update on the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship in Japan

We commend the extraordinary efforts by the Government of Japan to institute quarantine measures onboard the Diamond Princess. While the quarantine potentially conferred a significant public health benefit in slowing transmission, CDC’s assessment is that it may not have been sufficient to prevent transmission among individuals on the ship. CDC believes the rate of new infections on board, especially among those without symptoms, represents an ongoing risk. Therefore, to protect the health of the American public, all passengers and crew of the ship have been placed under travel restrictions, preventing them from returning to the United States for at least 14 days after they had left the Diamond Princess.

Currently, there are more than 100 U.S. citizens still onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship or in hospitals in Japan. These citizens have been placed under the restrictions, as have the ship’s other passengers and crew.

After disembarkation from the Diamond Princess, these passengers and crew will be required to wait 14 days without having symptoms or a positive coronavirus test result before they are permitted to board flights to the United States.

If an individual from this cruise arrives in the United States before the 14-day period ends, they will still be subject to a mandatory quarantine until they have completed the 14-day period with no symptoms or positive coronavirus test results.

Because of their high-risk exposure, there may be additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the remaining passengers on board the Diamond Princess.

CDC is committed to protecting the health and safety of all Americans. We continue to believe that the risk of exposure to COVID-19 to the general public in the United States is currently low. The U.S. Government is taking these measures to protect the Diamond Princess passengers and crew, their loved ones, the traveling public, and communities within the United States.

US tells remaining cruise passengers in Japan: Stay out for 2 weeks

                  February 19, 2020 (Mainichi Japan)

The U.S. government made good on its warning to Americans who chose to remain on board a quarantined cruise ship in Japan, telling them they cannot return home for at least two weeks after they come ashore.
U.S. officials notified the passengers Tuesday of the travel restriction, citing their possible exposure to the new virus while on board the Diamond Princess. A third Quebecer with coronavirus

VAT News| Published on February 18, 2020 at 9:03 AM

Quebecer Julien Bergeron, a cruise ship on the "Diamond Princess", also has coronavirus.

"They came knocking on my door to announce it to me," he said in an interview with Jean-Fran?ois Gu?rin in Quebec Matin. Ten hours after the terrible news, no more details. The couple have received a sheet of instructions to follow, but still do not know when and where Julien Bergeron will be transferred.

The Quebecer is one of 32 Canadians to have been infected with COVID-19 on board the cruise ship, quarantined for 16 days now. Two other Quebecers, Diane and Bernard M?nard, are also affected. Mr. Bergeron is accompanied by his spouse, Manon Trudel, who is still awaiting a response regarding her condition.

                    The first symptoms

The cruise line begins to experience symptoms related to the virus. "I have the flu, but I don't have a big temperature. I am tired, I have a little chills, ”describes the patient.

The couple are awaiting the transfer of Mr. Bergeron, either to a hospital in Japan or to a hotel. He says he has received conflicting messages about where he will be treated. "If I'm sick, I want to be cured as soon as possible!" He pleads.

The Bergeron-Trudel's luggage is done, they are ready to finally leave the ship. "We're tired, we don't know what's going on outside, we're in a tight space ... In 14 days, we had 10 hours of fresh air."

                    Elsewhere

The boat is not an adequate place to contain the quarantine, advance the couple. "We are in quarantine, we are supposed to improve!". Since the start of their forced isolation, 542 people have been infected with the coronavirus on board the "Diamond Princess".

The return of Julien Bergeron to Canada on board the charter flight planned by the government will therefore be impossible until it is restored.

The couple would like the Canadian government to consider other options to repatriate their 32 affected nationals, such as a military aircraft, or a hospital aircraft.

In the meantime, the couple is on the alert. The quarantine officers on board the cruise ship keep them informed of the development of the situation. "They knocked on the door twice. Each time the heart beats. "

About new coronavirus infectious disease confirmed in cruise ship during quarantine in Yokohama Port (the thirteenth report)

The cruise ship Diamond Princess, which arrived at Yokohama Port on February 3, is undergoing quarantine at sea. A new coronavirus test was conducted, including those who are considered to be at high risk from the viewpoint of ensuring health due to long-term stay on board, including those with symptoms such as fever, and the results were found. Of 607, 79 (including 68 asymptomatic pathogen carriers) were confirmed to be positive for the new coronavirus. In the future, it will be transported to medical institutions with infectious disease wards. Positive cases were confirmed in 621 of the 3,011 people tested (including 322 asymptomatic pathogen carriers).

Those who are transported include elderly people and foreign nationals, and it is necessary to take measures that take into account physical conditions. The press is requested to give special consideration to coverage of this matter.

Quarantine of the cruise ship continues to be implemented. A new coronavirus test is conducted for those who need it, and the results will be announced later.

                            February 20, 2020 11:38

Two Japanese men and women in their 80s who were hospitalized and treated for the virus were killed on the 20th in a cruise ship passenger who was confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus. This is the first time a cruise ship passenger has died and three people have been killed in the country.

As of the 19th, 621 cruise ships out of approximately 3,700 crew members and passengers on the cruise ship where outbreaks of the new coronavirus were confirmed were confirmed.

According to government officials, two of them, a 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman, died on the 20th.

Both were Japanese and had a basic illness and were confirmed to have been infected with the virus, so it was said that men were hospitalized on the 11th of this month and women on the 12th to be treated.

This is the first time a cruise ship passenger has died.

In addition, three people have been killed in Japan, following the death of a woman in her 80s living in Kanagawa Prefecture on the 13th of this month.

SALT LAKE CITY — From an isolation room in Japan’s Chiba Hospital where he is battling pneumonia, Tooele resident John Haering sent an email begging for help to both the cruise line that quarantined him after passengers were exposed to coronavirus and the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

“I have verified that I’m on your Contact list of people who are in hospitals off the Diamond Princess,” he wrote to both Princess Cruises and U.S. Embassy officials Thursday. “I have verified I have tested positive for COVID-19. My wife and friend have reached out to the embassy on my behalf, and yet still to this date, I have received one phone call from the embassy and have heard nothing from the Princess Cruise line since being pulled off the ship and sent to hospital in Chiba without even being tested to see if I had the Corona virus,” he wrote.

“I’m a US citizen who should have some rights and I don’t think it is to much to ask for some communication from the US embassy in Japan or from the cruise line I entrusted with my safety and the safety of my wife.”...
