New coronavirus infection confirmed on a cruise ship calling at Yokohama Port

The cruise ship Diamond Princess, which arrived at Yokohama Port on February 3, is currently undergoing quarantine at sea. As coronavirus positivity was confirmed, we will carry it to a medical institution in Kanagawa today. Positive cases were confirmed in 20 of 102 people, including yesterday.

Some of the conveyed persons include elderly people and foreign nationals, and it is necessary to take measures that take into account physical conditions. The press is requested to give special consideration to coverage of this matter.

Quarantine of the cruise ship continues to be implemented. We are currently conducting a new coronavirus test for those who need it, and the results will be announced later.

Is there not a risk of the ship becoming a hotspot for this virus?
There was a report from China of a person who was apparently infected by a neighbor living in an apartment below hers. In the relatively crowded and confined quarters of a ship, such transmission must be facilitated even more.

I would think so too - but they are staying in their cabins - and I just saw one of the passengers speaking and they said they have now been given gloves. I am just hoping that the staff who are providing meals etc. are free of the virus. They are being very thorough - but quite a few people are testing negative even with symptoms.

The 41 new cases are mostly in their 70's and 80's and include:
                          • 21 Japanese
                          • 8 Americans
