China insists official Covid data is transparent: state media

Merlin Lint 5 hours ago Last update: 2022-12-30
    ...
China has insisted that the data it publishes on Covid-19 deaths has always been transparent, state media reported, although the official figures are tiny compared to other countries and that its hospitals are overwhelmed with infections.

Beijing's release of all information about the virus was done "in a spirit of openness", a senior health official said at a press briefing hosted by China's State Council, Xinhua reported Thursday evening.

A national disease control body said there were around 5,500 new local cases and one death on Friday, but with mass testing ending and criteria narrowing for what counts as a Covid death, those numbers are no longer supposed to reflect reality. Some experts estimate that there could be up to 9,000 daily deaths.

"China has always released information on deaths and serious cases of Covid-19 in a spirit of openness and transparency," Jiao Yahui of the National Health Commission (NHC) told reporters on Thursday.

Jiao said China only counts Covid-19 deaths as cases of people who died of virus-induced respiratory failure after testing positive with a nucleic acid test, rather than other countries that include all deaths within 28 days of positive tests.

    Jiao said:

China has always stuck to scientific criteria for judging Covid-19 deaths, from start to finish, which are in line with international criteria.

The NHC said last week it would no longer publish the official daily Covid death toll.

Health risk analysis firm Airfinity said it currently estimates 9,000 daily deaths and 1.8 million infections per day in China, while it also expects 1.7 million deaths across the country by the end of April 2023.

The Britain-based researchers said their model was based on data from regional Chinese provinces, before changes in infection reporting were implemented, combined with case growth rates from other former countries. zero-Covid when they lifted the restrictions.

China announced this week that it would end mandatory quarantine upon arrival, after announcing earlier in the month that it had dropped a series of strict measures to contain the coronavirus.

The world's most populous country will downgrade its handling of Covid-19 from January 8, treating it as a Class B infection, rather than a more serious Class A infection.

Liang Wannian, head of the NHC's Covid response expert group, called the measures appropriate, scientific and based on law, Xinhua reported.

The state news agency reported that Liang said the change did not mean China was abandoning the virus, but rather directed resources to the most important areas of epidemic control and treatment. infected people.

Apparently the China government does not know about statistics and probability.

The truth will become apparent in the mortality statistics.
Life expectancy in the US has dropped by 2.4 years since the pandemic started, heavily impacting the life insurance industry, whose actuarial underpinnings suffered an earthquake.
China will perhaps do a bit better, having relatively fewer old people, but several million Covid deaths seems inescapable.

China does not publish mortality statistics. Except Hongkong and sometimes
some cities. E.g. WHO has it by age and cause for 1987-2000 for 3 regions (<10% of population)
      but nothing since 2000.

Wow, I'd not known that. Thank you, gsgs, your input corrects my mistaken beliefs.
Seems astonishing that a modern society would deliberately hide this central data, but China sure is going its own way..

maybe not deliberately hiding. Its a big country and lots of organisation required.
      It's similar in Russia,Brasil,India

      ----------edit------------
sorry, Russia and Brasil do publish it. They had some gaps in the past.
But add Indonesia,Nigeria. So, China,India,Indonesia and most of Central Africa.

It is very remarkable when the WHO publicly disagrees with China since that country can be a major source of funding:

      snip

The surge in cases in a country of 1.4 billion has also raised global concerns about the potential emergence of new variants – and of China’s levels of monitoring and sharing data. A number of economies have implemented Covid testing requirements for travelers from China, citing a dearth of data on strains circulating there.

On Wednesday, the European Union “strongly encouraged” its member states to introduce a requirement for a negative Covid test for passengers traveling from China to the EU, according to a statement released by the Swedish presidency of the bloc.

The WHO’s Tedros said Wednesday it was “understandable” that some countries were taking these steps, “with circulation in China so high and comprehensive data not forthcoming.”

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning’s Regular Press Conference on January 5, 2023
        ...
Fuji TV: A question on COVID-19. The WHO said that China should provide more detailed and accurate data. What is your comment?

Mao Ning: Since COVID began, China has shared information and data with the international community in an open and transparent manner. We shared the genome sequence of the virus at the earliest opportunity, making important contribution to the drug and vaccine research and development in countries around the world. China has carried out close cooperation with the WHO over the years. We have kept channels open for close communication at three levels with WHO’s headquarters, Western Pacific Regional Office and Representative Office in China. Preliminary figures show that since COVID was first reported, the two sides have had over 60 technical exchanges on COVID containment, treatment, vaccine research and development and origins-tracing.

After recently refining its COVID response measures, China has held several technical meetings with the WHO. I would like to briefly go over these meetings:

On December 9, 2022, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) held a special meeting with the WHO Representative Office in China, during which the NHC informed the WHO of the containment and treatment of the disease in China.

On December 30, 2022, China and the WHO held another technical meeting on COVID-19. The two sides exchanged views on the current COVID situation, clinical care, vaccination and other technical issues. Chinese experts shared in detail the background and basis for the policy refinement and provided a comprehensive update on the current situation in China.

On January 3, 2023, China, at the invitation of the WHO, sent experts from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to a meeting of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution, where we provided a comprehensive update on the recent developments and COVID variants in China.

On January 5, 2023, WHO will hold a briefing with member states. China has asked relevant experts to attend the meeting where they will further inform the WHO of epidemic containment in China in detail and respond to technical issues that are of concern to other parties.

Besides all these, recently China’s relevant departments have shared the genome data of the virus from COVID cases in China via the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID).

The WHO has noted on many occasions that the technical meetings between China and the WHO have gone smoothly and produced positive results. The information and data that China shared helped scientists from all countries to learn about the evolution of the virus in China and strengthened the global science community’s confidence in China’s COVID response.

Facts have proven that China has always maintained close communication with the WHO and shared information and data on the epidemic in a timely, open and transparent manner in accordance with law.

At the moment, China’s COVID situation is under control. As China adjusts its COVID response policy, we will continue to carry out activities including technical exchanges with the WHO. It is hoped that the WHO Secretariat will take a science-based, objective and just position and play a positive role in addressing the pandemic globally.

AFP: I have a related question. The US leader said yesterday that he’s worried about how China is handling the COVID outbreak. Do you have any response to these remarks?

Mao Ning: Since COVID began, China has shared relevant information and data with the international community, including the US in an open, transparent and responsible manner.

I have gone over in detail how relevant authorities of China shared data with the WHO. According to a WHO release on January 4, the genome data of the virus provided by China’s National Health Commission shows that the predominant variant in China is in line with the genome sequence from travelers from China infected with the virus submitted by other countries, and no new variant or mutation of known significance was noted.

The COVID situation in China is under control. China will continue to closely monitor possible mutations of the virus, release relevant information in a timely manner, and work with the international community to tackle the COVID challenge. We also call on all parties to take science-based and proportionate response measures not targeting any specific country, avoid remarks and actions that politicize the epidemic, jointly safeguard normal people-to-people exchange and work together for an early victory over the pandemic.

Kyodo News: It is reported that Japan will impose new COVID measures targeting travelers from China from January 8. Travelers from China to Japan need to present a negative nucleic acid test taken within 72 hours prior to departure and take a nucleic acid test upon arrival. The EU also calls on its member states to take the same measures. What is China’s comment?

Mao Ning: We noted the reports. China always believes that for all countries, COVID response measures need to be fact-based, science-based and proportionate. They should not be used for political manipulation, there should not be discriminatory measures, and measures should not affect normal travel and people-to-people exchange and cooperation. We also remind our fellow citizens who are planning to travel abroad to check their health conditions and the entry requirements of their destination in advance to avoid disruption to their itinerary.

NHK: WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that given the lack of information from China, restrictions that some countries introduced in response to China’s COVID situation are understandable. What’s your comment?

Mao Ning: Let me stress again that China’s COVID situation is under control. For all countries, COVID response measures need to be science-based and proportionate. They should not be used for political manipulation, there should not be discriminatory measures against China, and measures should not affect normal travel and people-to-people exchange and cooperation.

Bloomberg: You say that China has been open with the WHO and the rest of the world in providing data and yet the WHO still says China hasn’t provided complete data. So how do you respond to this?

Mao Ning: I just shared with you some details of the communication and exchange between the Chinese side and the WHO. We will keep up such exchange. On technical issues related to the sharing of data, I will refer you to competent Chinese authorities.

AFP: The WHO’s emergency director Mike Ryan also said yesterday that he believes that China’s definition of COVID death is too narrow. Do you have any response to this?

Mao Ning: I have noted the recent response by Chinese public health experts on this question. You can ask the competent Chinese authorities for further information.

Covid cases in China touch 900 million - study

            Published

            By Nicholas Yong
            BBC News

Some 900 million people in China have been infected with the coronavirus as of 11 January, according to a study by Peking University.

The report estimates that 64% of the country's population has the virus.

It ranks Gansu province, where 91% of the people are reported to be infected, at the top, followed by Yunnan (84%) and Qinghai (80%).
            ...
China's central Henan province is the only province to have given details of infection rates - earlier this month a health official there said nearly 90% of the population had had Covid, with similar rates seen in urban and rural areas.
            ...
Last month, China abruptly abandoned its zero Covid policies. It also reopened its borders on Sunday.

Official data shows five or fewer deaths a day over the past month, numbers which are inconsistent with the long queues seen at funeral homes and reports of deaths on social media.

In December Chinese officials said they planned to issue monthly rather than daily updates on the Covid situation in the country.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said China, which stopped reporting Covid fatalities from Tuesday, was heavily under-reporting Covid deaths.
            ...
International health experts have predicted at least a million Covid-related deaths in China this year. Beijing has officially reported just over 5,000 deaths since the pandemic began, one of the lowest death rates in the world.

This comes amid warnings from a top scientist that cases in rural areas will surge over the new year.

China reports big jump in COVID hospitalisations - WHO

GENEVA, Jan 19 (Reuters) - China reported a large jump in COVID-19 hospitalisations in the week through to January 15 to the highest since the pandemic began, according to a weekly report published by the World Health Organization on Thursday.

However, the WHO said it awaited "detailed provincial data disaggregated by week of reporting" nearly 60,000 additional COVID-related hospital deaths reported by China last week and did not include them in the tally.

The number of people hospitalised with the disease in China rose by 70 % to 63,307 versus the previous week, according to the WHO report based on data submitted by Beijing. This is the highest weekly figure China has reported since COVID-19 first emerged more than three years ago.

Just peculiar how China's Covid numbers have ceased to move.
                Does an uncounted epidemic matter?
At this point, it seems the world has decided that the Swedish government was essentially right, the cost of lockdowns far exceeded the cost of maintaining a functioning social framework.
