Factbox: China's fight against novel coronavirus outbreak

    Source: Xinhua| 2020-02-09 17:00:30
BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China has stepped up efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Here are the latest developments:

-- Authorities on Sunday started to disinfect the city of Wuhan twice a day to beef up efforts in containing the outbreak of the novel strain of coronavirus. Wuhan is the epicenter of the virus outbreak in central China's Hubei Province.

-- More medical teams are arriving in virus-hit Wuhan to help battle the epidemic.

On Saturday night, 260 medical workers came to Wuhan from the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, bringing new medical equipment and supplies. A charter plane of Xiamen Airlines brought 264 medics from Xiamen City, in east China's Fujian Province, and authorities sent 132 medical staff by plane from Wuxi City, in the eastern Jiangsu Province.

Chinese health authorities have dispatched a total of 11,921 medical personnels from across the country to Hubei Province to aid the fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia, according to the National Health Commission on Sunday.

-- Trade unions in China have provided a financial aid of more than 20 million yuan (about 2.9 million U.S. dollars) to help Hubei Province battle the epidemic.

The All-China Federation of Trade Unions also donated 200 tonnes of disinfectants and 20,000 masks.

-- Chinese authorities have reassured producers of key medical supplies that the government would be the ultimate buyer in a move to encourage production to contain the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Such products initially include test kits, medical goggles, medical protective gear and masks, as well as their raw materials, and the list will be adjusted with the development of the epidemic, according to a guideline jointly issued by several ministries.

-- Authorities have begun closed-off management in some residential buildings in Huanggang, one of the cities worst hit by the epidemic in Hubei.

The buildings include those hosting confirmed cases of infection, suspected cases, patients with fever and possible link to the virus, and those who had close contacts with infected patients.

-- The National Health Commission Sunday said it received reports of 2,656 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 89 deaths on Saturday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 37,198 by the end of Saturday and 811 people had died of the disease.

-- A total of 2,649 patients infected with the novel coronavirus had been discharged from hospital after recovery by the end of Saturday, the commission announced Sunday.

-- Central China's Hubei, the hardest-hit province, reported 2,147 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 81 new deaths on Saturday, local health authorities said Sunday. The figure is 694 less compared with the new confirmed cases reported in the previous day.

-- The mortality rate of the virus in Hubei stood at 2.88 percent, with the city of Tianmen and Wuhan having the highest death rates at 5.08 percent and 4.06 percent, respectively.

-- The newly-built Leishenshan Hospital in Wuhan, the second in the city replicating Beijing's SARS treatment model, received on Saturday the first batch of patients infected with the virus. The two makeshift hospitals --Leishenshan (Thunder God Mountain) and Huoshenshan (Fire God Mountain), together can accommodate 2,600 beds.

-- China released an application guide to solicit research and development projects on rapid test kits for the novel coronavirus. The on-site quick testing equipment and reagents should be able to identify confirmed infection among suspected patients within 1.5 hours to help prevent and control the epidemic. Research institutes, universities and enterprises can submit applications to the Ministry of Science and Technology from Feb. 8 to 13.

Government procurement of the medical equipment and drugs of which there have been acute shortages is to be increased, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, a macroeconomic planning agency under the State Council, the country’s cabinet.

Makers of health screening equipment, and drugs and vaccines, were being pushed to produce more of them as soon as possible, the NDRC said on Sunday. The government would help companies to secure funding, licences, facilities and raw materials if needed, and would buy any unsold products, it said.

The list of supplies covered by the move would include medical overalls, masks, eye shields, testing kits, infrared thermometers and related drugs, it said.

Where did they go? Millions left Wuhan before quarantine
Erika Kinetz The Associated Press Published Sunday, February 9, 2020 8:57AM EST

SHANGHAI -- For weeks after the first reports of a mysterious new virus in Wuhan, millions of people poured out of the central Chinese city, cramming onto buses, trains and planes as the first wave of China's great Lunar New Year migration broke across the nation. Some carried with them the new virus that has since claimed over 800 lives and sickened more than 37,000 people.

Officials finally began to seal the borders on Jan. 23. But it was too late. Speaking to reporters a few days after the city was put under quarantine, the mayor estimated that 5 million people had already left.

              Where did they go?...

Bangladesh Scraps Second Evacuation Plan As Aircrew Refuses To Fly To Wuhan Bangladesh evacuated 312 people from Wuhan last week, and had planned a second flight for another 171 Bangladeshis.

                Dhaka:
Aircrew from Bangladesh's national carrier Biman have refused to work on a flight aimed at repatriating citizens from virus-hit Chinese cities, forcing the government to scrap the evacuation plan.

The South Asian nation last week evacuated 312 people, mostly students, from the epicentre of the deadly outbreak, and had planned a second flight for another 171 Bangladeshis.

"We can't bring them because we can't send any flight," foreign minister A.K. Abdul Momen told reporters on Saturday.

"No crew wants to go there. The crew who went there earlier don't want to go either."

                    09 Feb, 2020 - 21:02

Sichuan (China) — Orders issued by China’s top health authority for the swift cremation of the remains of coronavirus victims at facilities near the hospitals where they died appear to be an overreaction and unnecessary to curb the transmission of the disease, top epidemiologists have said.

The February 2 notice from the country’s National Health Commission requires hospitals to notify funeral parlours of the death along with family members, but also states the procedure can be completed even if the family of the deceased does not agree...

Chinese experts on whether Wuhan pneumonia virus is airborne

Time: 2020-02-09 19:17News citation: Central News AgencyWritten Editor: Huang Qilin

Chinese experts and officials are still unsure whether the new type of coronavirus pneumonia (Wuhan pneumonia) will be transmitted through droplet particles (called "aerosols" in China), that is, airborne infections. Some experts have analyzed that this type of infection is less likely than a traffic accident.

A few days ago, Ningbo, Zhejiang, disclosed a case of neocoronavirus pneumonia. The infected person was infected only after staying close to the patient for 15 seconds, which triggered a discussion of the virus infection route.

Chinanews reported that Zeng Qun, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, said at a press conference on the Shanghai epidemic prevention and control work team on the 8th that the transmission routes that can be identified in Wuhan are mainly direct transmission, droplet transmission and contact transmission.

But on the same day, the fifth edition of the pneumonia diagnosis and treatment plan for 2019 new coronavirus infection issued by the Chinese National Health Commission reiterated that "the aerosol (droplet particles) and the digestive tract and other transmission routes are yet to be clarified."

Aerosol refers to a gaseous dispersion system composed of suspended solid or liquid particles. It is often used to refer to dust-containing or polluting gases. Viral droplet transmission refers to the formation of droplet nuclei in the air suspension process, which can float to a distance and cause long-distance transmission.

In the content released on the 8th of the "Ask Me and Answer" module of the National Health and Medical Commission website, Feng Luzhao, a researcher at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that at present, the main transmission route of new coronavirus in 2019 is respiratory droplets and contact transmission. The transmission routes of particles and feces should be further clarified.

He said that the droplets travel short distances and do not float in the air for a long time. The transmission of droplet particles can occur under certain special conditions, such as when performing professional medical procedures such as clinical tracheal intubation. If it is under routine clinical care and general working and living conditions, wearing a mask properly is enough to protect ordinary people from being infected.

Yao Maosheng, a professor at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Peking University, said that in a car or office where there is not enough ventilation and the environment is relatively small, droplet particle transmission and droplet transmission should be considered as equally important factors.

Yao Maosheng said that the ventilation of subways, airplanes, and high-speed rails is relatively good, and cars and cabins are continuously exchanging air with the outside world.

He analyzed that the virus droplets discharged by patients were rapidly diluted in an open environment, the concentration was significantly reduced, the activity was affected, and the probability and dose of inhalation were greatly reduced. In the absence of close-up patient droplets nearby, the risk of infection in healthy people is lower than the chance of a traffic accident.

For how to prevent indoor droplet infection, experts recommend opening windows for ventilation or using an air cleaner, wearing a mask in the elevator and touching it with care.
