  • Researchers say the coronavirus may be more contagious than current data shows

    KEY POINTS
    • The so-called R naught of the disease, a mathematical equation that shows how many people will get sick from each infected person, is around 2.2.
    • World health officials caution that it may take months before the true R naught is known as more coronavirus cases come to light.
    • China’s health minister, Ma Xiaowei, recently told reporters there is evidence it’s already mutated into a stronger variation that is able to spread more easily among humans.
....“The rapid acceleration of cases is of concern,” Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s emergencies program, said at a news conference last week before the agency declared a global health emergency.

Chinese scientists worry the respiratory illness, which world health officials say likely came from a fish market, has mutated to adapt to its new human hosts far more quickly than SARS. Data on the virus is changing by the day, and some infectious disease specialists say it will take weeks before they can see just how contagious it is. What they’re seeing so far is concerning and leading U.S. and international scientists to believe the virus is more contagious than the current data shows, according to interviews with epidemiologists, scientists and infectious disease specialists.
...Additionally, the virus’s current transmission number may be underestimated by scientists who currently have very limited data, according to Huang. While the new virus appears to be less lethal than the 2003 SARS outbreak, which sickened 8,098 people and killed almost 800 over nine months, it is spreading significantly faster. It took the new virus less than a month to surpass the number of SARS cases.

“A relatively mild virus can cause a lot of damage if a lot of people get it,” WHO’s Ryan said last week. “And this is the issue at the moment. We don’t fully understand it.”

Researchers from Lancaster University in England estimated the virus’s R naught may be closer to 3.1, saying “current clinical and epidemiological data are insufficient to understa...https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/04/rese...ata-shows.html

Our county quickly implemented the spirit of the video conference of Sichuan Province's response to the new coronavirus infection pneumonia epidemic

      Time: 2020-02-04 12:37:06

On February 3, a teleconference on Sichuan province's response to pneumonia epidemic of new coronavirus infection was held. Li Benyong, secretary of the county Party committee and leader of the county-level response to the new coronavirus infection pneumonia epidemic, attended the meeting at our county branch and made arrangements for implementing the meeting requirements. Li Shanjun, deputy secretary of the county party committee, county head, and county coordinating group for the leadership of the new type of coronavirus infection pneumonia; Wan Lin, director of the Standing Committee of the County People's Congress; Fu outline of the chairman of the county CPPCC; Chen Bin and Lou Kewei, deputy secretaries of the county party committee, attended the meeting in our county branch

The meeting pointed out that the resumption of work and the resumption of production of enterprises will bring new challenges to epidemic prevention and control. The county's party and government agencies, enterprises, and institutions should report to work according to the actual situation of the personnel to avoid the gathering of personnel. Cadres and employees who do not have the task of prevention and control should actively report to the community or village, and cooperate with the village and community to do a good job of visits, investigations, and publicity and guidance. jobs. All production enterprises and construction units must follow the unified time schedule of the provincial, municipal, and county committees to do a good job in order to resume work. If it is really necessary to start work, it must be approved by relevant departments.

The meeting called for a major environmental sanitation reform. Do a good job of cleaning and disinfection of all public areas in county towns, central villages and towns, and settlements. Relevant departments should take effective measures to regulate the disposal of medical waste and social source masks to prevent secondary transmission. It is necessary to strengthen the control of personnel going out. All party members, cadres, people's congress members and CPPCC members in the county should take the lead in managing themselves and their families, and motivate the people and neighbors to assist villages and community workers to persuade residents to go out less, not to go on the street, not to visit, or to gather.

Those who do not obey the management and persuasion of village and community workers and gather people to cause troubles shall be dealt with according to law by the public security organs. Any party member, cadre, or public official who finds that they do not obey the management, do not obey the persuasion, and violate the discipline of prevention and control, the disciplinary inspection organ shall promptly, promptly, and strictly

For accountability, all agencies, state-owned enterprises, and institutions must strengthen their propaganda, education, supervision, and management of their cadres and employees. It is necessary to continue comprehensive investigations and prevent death guards. To ensure that joint defense and joint control are in place, we must strictly implement carpet-style inspections with full coverage and no dead spots. Close contacts of confirmed cases and recent personnel from key epidemic areas must be tracked, registered, and observed. If necessary, focus on key personnel. Isolation and observation to ensure early detection, early reporting, early diagnosis, early isolation, and early treatment. We must make every effort to ensure the smooth supply of epidemic prevention materials. Open up a "green channel" to support relevant enterprises with conditions to convert production of medical protective supplies, open up more procurement channels, further mobilize social donations, coordinate and allocate resources from all parties, and effectively alleviate the pressure on medical supplies. We must do a good job of defense in rural areas. Due to the spread of the epidemic, the transportation is not smooth, and many local breeding enterprises have insufficient reserves. The agricultural and rural departments should actively assist them to purchase the materials and ensure the supply of breeding enterprises. It is necessary to strictly implement the requirements for prevention and control, and to increase the disinfection of agricultural and agricultural enterprises, specialized organizations, and breeding farms.

The meeting emphasized that the epidemic prevention and control period has now entered the most critical period, and the county must continue to maintain fighting spirit, with a firm attitude, winning confidence, thorough control and pragmatic style, resolutely win the epidemic prevention and control fight

        • What does it mean if the latest confirmed cases exceed 20,000? When will the 'inflection point' of the epidemic arrive?

Early this morning, I was swiped by 20,000!

As of 24:00 on February 3, the number of confirmed cases of pneumonia of the new coronavirus infection exceeded 20,000, reaching 20,438, and the number of suspected cases was 23,214. Some people are worried about it, and even worry that the epidemic will develop in a bad direction.

What does it mean if there are more than 20,000 confirmed cases? Can the epidemic be controlled? When is the inflection point? Come and listen to what authoritative experts say. Some experts have been fighting the front line of the epidemic. I believe that after hearing what they said, these questions will be answered.

Yes, the epidemic has indeed reached the critical stage of climbing

What does it mean to have over 20,000 confirmed cases?

Many experts believe that the number of confirmed cases is increasing, but the increase in the number is already expected, and I believe it will not last long.

Zhong Nanshan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the leader of the high-level expert group of the National Health and Health Committee, told the media that the number of confirmed diagnoses is now increasing and may even continue for some time, but I believe it will not take too long.

Shan Guangliang, professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences believes that in the longest incubation period (14 days), those who have been in close contact with the disease have developed the disease, and those who have not developed the disease have not. Will be sick, completely in the field of control.

Shan Guangliang said that after experiencing the longest incubation period, we should be able to see significant prevention and control effects, that is, the number of new cases will be significantly reduced, and the area of epidemic spread will be significantly reduced and more and more limited.

Nevertheless, experts continue to remind the arduousness of the fight against the 'epidemic'.

Zhong Nanshan said that in the face of the current epidemic, we still need to strengthen prevention and control, and we cannot relax our vigilance. Shan Guangliang said that we are in the critical period of preventing and controlling viral infections. If we want to achieve a decisive victory, we must continue to consider the overall situation and go all out without slackening!

Seeing hope, cured cases have surpassed deaths

Don't look at the number of confirmed diagnoses increasing these days, and the epidemic situation is also undergoing positive changes-

The good news is that the number of new cured cases exceeds the number of new deaths for 4 consecutive days!

Just now, this latest development is also hot search.

According to the latest pneumonia epidemic situation of new coronavirus infection announced by the National Health and Health Commission, China's cumulative cured cases exceeded cumulative deaths for 2 consecutive days, and newly cured cases exceeded deaths for 4 consecutive days.

          As of 24:00 on February 2nd, a total of 361 deaths and 475 cured cases were discharged;

As of 24:00 on February 1, a total of 304 deaths and 328 cured cases were discharged.

This is the cumulative cure for more than 2 consecutive deaths.

In addition, from 04:00 to 2 February, 57 new deaths and 147 new cases were cured and discharged. Prior to February 1, January 31, and January 30, the new deaths and newly cured cases were: 45 cases, 85 cases; 46 cases, 72 cases; 43 cases, 47 cases.

This is an increase in newly cured cases over deaths for 4 consecutive days.

In fact, in the epidemic situation, it is not easy to cure and discharge. Not only does it take time to meet the discharge conditions, but the standards are also high.

Li Xingwang, member of the National Medical Experts Group and chief expert of the Infectious Diseases Diagnosis and Research Center of Beijing Ditan Hospital, explained that in order to ensure that patients were not infectious when discharged from hospital, clinical symptoms were basically relieved and their temperature was normal. .

Jiang Min, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing Shijitan Hospital, said that the cumulative cure of discharged patients is higher than deaths, which is a positive signal, indicating that the epidemic prevention and control work has achieved certain results and 'seeing hope.'

Still persisting, the 'inflection point' of the epidemic is ahead

There are also many 'positive energy' messages coming one after another:

——There will be more and more discharged patients! Zhong Nanshan said recently that the number of cured discharges 'will soon increase.'

-Important progress has been made in vaccine development! Li Lanjuan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a member of the high-level expert group of the National Health and Health Commission, said that eight strains of the virus have been isolated from P3 in the State Key Laboratory of Infectious Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, and several of them are very suitable for vaccines and are being launched in full swing!

——The production capacity of pharmaceutical companies is rapidly recovering! Tian Yulong, chief engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said: On February 1, the daily output of the new coronavirus nucleic acid detection reagent reached 773,000, which is 40 times that of suspected patients.

          ...

So, when will the inflection point of the epidemic come?

Zhang Wenhong, leader of the Shanghai Medical Treatment Expert Team and director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, said that if the prevention and control works quickly, the inflection point of the epidemic will come sooner. 'The turning point may appear in 2 to 4 weeks as a whole.'

Academician Zhong Nanshan said that the epidemic is expected to show a peak in the next 10 days to about two weeks, that is, the peak period will occur between the 12th and 16th of this month.

Shan Guangliang believes that if the current new cases are basically found in close contacts who have been isolated, then after a long incubation period, that is, around the Lantern Festival, it is expected that the number of cases will be seen. Significantly decreased.

According to experts, although the 'inflection point' cannot be accurately predicted, it will not wait too long.

We believe that with the Party Central Committee attaching great importance to it, with 1.4 billion people united as one, the morale is high, and the frontline medical staff fights retrograde, and we will surely achieve the ultimate victory of the epidemic prevention and control blockade.

Today (February 5), Lin Li, deputy team leader of Zhangzhou Hospital's New Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment Group and director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Medicine, told the Beijing News reporter that because the patient's lung CT meets the characteristics of confirmed cases, he insisted on multiple tests. "I don't want to miss the diagnosis." He also suggested that more caution should be used in the detection of the new coronavirus, and the value of chest CT diagnosis should be strengthened.

Today (February 5), a reporter from the Beijing News learned from Zhangzhou Hospital of Fujian Province that a new patient with newly diagnosed new pneumonia was diagnosed in the hospital. After five throat swab tests, the final diagnosis was completed. The first four related test results All were negative.

The hospital stated that the patient Zheng Moumou, 32 years old, had fever twice after returning to Zhangzhou from Wuhan on January 22. On January 29, the test was negative for the first time, and on February 2, the fifth test was positive and the result was positive. After expert discussion, Zheng Moumou was diagnosed with new coronary pneumonia on February 4.

Lin Li, deputy leader of the new coronavirus prevention and treatment group and director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, told the Beijing News reporter on the phone that according to the diagnosis and treatment guidelines, the national standard is to test twice, and the test result is negative before it can be ruled out. "But during the diagnosis, we found that although the patient's symptoms were mild, from the perspective of imaging CT, we felt that there were still more typical symptoms of viral pneumonia, so we insisted on doing it a few more times."

Lin Li said that once the diagnosis is missed, it may cause the spread of the virus. "In this case, other hospitals have also reported that the fourth and fifth detections are only rare."

In response to this confirmed case, Lin Li believes that the new crown virus test may be related to the individual's viral load. "Each person's load is different and the test results may be different. When the total viral load in the body is relatively small, the test results may be presented. negative."

He acknowledged that any test has certain limitations and cannot be 100% accurate. "It is recommended that outpatient units strengthen the diagnostic value of chest CT, especially those with a history of epidemiology, such as living in Wuhan, etc., and make a comprehensive judgment."

                            • Radiologists describe coronavirus imaging features

Date: February 5, 2020 Source: Radiological Society of North America Summary: Researchers describe CT imaging features that aid in the early detection and diagnosis of Wuhan coronavirus.

In a special report published today in the journal Radiology, researchers describe CT imaging features that aid in the early detection and diagnosis of Wuhan coronavirus.

"Early disease recognition is important not only for prompt implementation of treatment, but also for patient isolation and effective public health surveillance, containment and response," said the study's lead author, Michael Chung, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic, Interventional and Molecular Radiology in the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, N.Y.

On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) learned of several cases of a respiratory illness clinically resembling viral pneumonia and manifesting as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The newly discovered virus emerging from Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China, has been temporarily named "novel coronavirus" (2019-nCoV). This new coronavirus belongs to a family of viruses that include Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The outbreak is escalating quickly, with thousands of confirmed 2019-nCoV cases reported globally. On January 30, the U.S. reported the first confirmed ....For each of the 21 patients, the initial CT scan was evaluated for the following characteristics: (1) presence of ground-glass opacities, (2) presence of consolidation, (3) number of lobes affected by ground-glass or consolidative opacities, (4) degree of lobe involvement in addition to overall lung "total severity score," (5) presence of nodules, (6) presence of a pleural effusion, (7) presence of thoracic lymphadenopathy (lymph nodes of abnormal size or morphology), and (8) presence of underlying lung disease such as emphysema or fibrosis. Any other thoracic abnormalities were also noted.

The analysis showed that 2019-nCoV typically manifests on CT with bilateral ground-glass and consolidative pulmonary opacities. Nodular opacities, crazy-paving pattern, and a peripheral distribution of disease may be additional features helpful in early diagnosis. The researchers also noted that lung cavitation, discrete pulmonary nodules, pleural effusions and lymphadenopathy are characteristically absent in cases of 2019-nCoV.
