Four people in Scotland being tested for deadly coronavirus after showing symptoms following China visit

Three of the suspected cases were in Edinburgh, while the other is believed to be in Glasgow.

All four patients recently returned form Wuhan, the source of the outbreak.

It is not yet known which hospitals are treating them, though Prof Juergen Haas, head of infection medicine at Edinburgh University, said it was "very likely" that cases would be confirmed in the UK.

"In any European countries there is a danger that these cases occur," he said.

ECDC: Pneumonia cases associated with novel coronavirus, China

Chinese authorities have identified a cluster of novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV infections in Wuhan City, China. Cases with travel history to Wuhan have been detected in other areas of China, such as Beijing and Guangdong. Thailand, Japan, South Korea and the United States have also reported cases. Further global spread is likely.

Contact tracing activities and applied hygiene and environmental sanitation activities in Wuhan are ongoing.

The 2019-nCoV identified in China is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. Outbreaks of novel virus infections among people are always of public health concern, especially when there’s little knowledge about the characteristics of the virus, how it spreads between people, how severe are the resulting infections and how to treat them.

Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed but more information is needed to evaluate the full extent of this mode of transmission. The source of infection is unknown and could still be active. Therefore, the likelihood of infection for travellers visiting Wuhan having close contact with symptomatic individuals is considered moderate. Consequently, the likelihood of importation of cases of 2019-nCoV to the EU/EEA is also considered to be moderate. Adherence to appropriate infection prevention and control practices, in particular in healthcare settings in EU/EEA countries with direct links to Wuhan, make the likelihood that a case reported in the EU would result in secondary cases within the EU/EEA low.

All flights from Wuhan have been cancelled. The Chinese New Year celebrations at the end of January will increase travel volume to/from China and within China, hence increasing the likelihood of arrival of cases in the EU.

The outbreak investigations are on-going and as this is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, ECDC will provide updated information as it becomes available

Coronavirus fears in Scotland as two in hospital after China trip

Two travellers to Scotland from China are being treated in hospital amid fears over the spread of deadly coronavirus.

The patients were taken into isolation after reporting flu-like symptoms after entering the UK.

It is believed that the travellers came to Scotland from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the latest outbreak erupted, in the past week.

Initial tests have not been able to rule out coronavirus but senior doctors believed the timing of the flights and symptoms gave grounds to be optimistic that they were suffering from common flu.

Coronavirus outbreak: doctors use robot to treat first known US patient

American citizen in his 30s was admitted to Washington state hospital on Monday after trip to China

"Doctors have been using a robot to treat the first person known to have been admitted to hospital in the US with a new strain of the coronavirus, as part of an effort to prevent the spread of the disease, which has killed at least 17 people in China and infected hundreds more.

The man in his 30s was admitted to the special pathogens unit in a hospital in Everett, Washington, on Monday. The US citizen had recently returned from a trip to central China and had been diagnosed in Seattle.

Dr George Diaz, the section chief of infectious diseases at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, told the Guardian the patient was in a “satisfactory condition” on Wednesday. He did not give an update on how long the patient would remain in the unit.

Diaz said he had sat outside a window of the patient’s 20ft x 20ft room to operate the robot, which was equipped with a camera, microphone and stethoscope. It is one of many ways the hospital has worked to reduce risk of the virus spreading.

Diaz said the patient was picked up from his home and taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was brought to the isolation unit in an Isopod – a closed gurney – and then allowed to move around inside his room once it was secured.,,"

In a 50-minute interview with reporters, Wang Guangfa could not hear the difference from normal people except for occasional cough. During the interview, his attending doctor greeted him outside the door, and Wang Guangfa blurted out: "You are my life-saving benefactor."

Wang Guangfa told reporters that this is because the doctor suggested that he use a drug called "lopinavirlitonavir tablets", which is an antiviral drug for AIDS. This drug is effective in his case, but it is unclear whether it will be effective in other patients and follow-up observations are needed. Earlier, Zhong Nanshan, a well-known respiratory expert in China and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, once said that currently there is no specific medicine for this new type of pneumonia.

Wang Guangfa said that many patients generally need more than one to two weeks to gradually control and improve their condition. It took him only a day to get his temperature down. After three days of normal body temperature, he had to go through two tests. The most optimistic estimate is that he will be discharged from the hospital five days later. (Finish)
