GENEVA – An advance team of international experts led by the World Health Organization (WHO) has left for Beijing to help investigate China’s coronavirus epidemic, the Geneva-based agency said on Sunday.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who made a trip to Beijing for talks with President Xi Jinping and Chinese ministers in late January, returned with an agreement on sending an international mission.

But it has taken nearly two weeks to get the government’s green light on its composition, which was not announced, other than to say that WHO veteran Dr. Bruce Aylward, a Canadian epidemiologist and emergencies expert, was heading it...

WHO: Panel of Experts to conduct investigations over weekend
    2020-02-14

A working group led by WHO will launch an investigation into the new crown virus epidemic in China this weekend.

A Reuters report on the 14th quoted WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as revealing that the team members included 12 international experts and 12 corresponding Chinese leaders. This investigation will focus on the spread of the new crown virus, the severity of the epidemic, and the impact of current epidemic prevention measures.

He also added that the purpose of the working group's visit was to provide further instructions for the outbreak response and China and global epidemic prevention operations.

In addition, Mike Ryan, WHO's executive director of health emergencies, said he believes U.S. health officials have joined the working group, but he did not mention specific details.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said recently that the agency has not been invited to China to investigate a new coronavirus outbreak. Kudlow, economic adviser to the White House, expressed "disappointment" in this, saying that the transparency of China's handling of the epidemic was worse than expected.

WHO expert team visits China for virus control
By Zhao Juecheng and Leng Shumei Source:Global Times Published: 2020/2/17 20:08:40

A World Health Organization (WHO) expert team, including American experts, has arrived in Beijing and will visit South China's Guangdong Province and Southwest China's Sichuan Province to research China's prevention and control work on the novel coronavirus.

Geng Shuang, spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry, made the announcement at a routine press conference on Monday.

The team has started their activities, Geng said.

The expert team can help China trace the virus and provide suggestions on quarantine, Chen Xi, an assistant professor at the School of Public Health of Yale University, told the Global Times on Monday.

He noted a lack of epidemiological surveys while nationwide medical staff dash to the frontier to treat patients.

The epidemic-stricken Hubei is not included in the international expert team's destinations, which, according to experts, is because the province is at a vital time combating the epidemic, and cannot spare time and people to receive the experts...
