Alberta has five cases of COVID-19 that do not have obvious transmission sources, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said, as the cases in the province rose to 119.

Three of the cases without determined links are in Edmonton and the other two are in Calgary. One case in the north zone appears to have acquired the illness while visiting the Edmonton area.

The chief medical officer announced 22 new cases in the province at her daily update Wednesday. Three of the cases are in intensive care and six are receiving treatment in hospital. The rest are recovering at home. One previously diagnosed case is in intensive care as well.

The province is also further restricting visitors to hospitals. Only one visitor will be allowed to see a patient at a time and they must be symptom free. Children will not be permitted to visit, except in special circumstances...

                  New rules in Alberta

Premier Jason Kenney said the restriction on mass gatherings was being tightened. People can no longer gather in groups of under 50; they must be smaller than 15. That includes indoor and outdoor events, the premier said, like weddings and funerals.

Kenney also announced the closure of all non-essential businesses. He said that includes close-contact businesses like hair and nail salons, tattoo parlours, furniture and clothing stores, computer and gaming stores...

EDMONTON -- Alberta confirmed 117 cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, the largest daily total in Alberta to date.

The province credits the large increase, which brought the total to 871, to a testing backlog.

Two more Albertans have died as a result of the novel coronavirus, bringing Alberta's death toll to 11.

"This has been the toughest week of the pandemic for our province," Kenney said.

"We need to be upfront with Albertans. The hard truth is that things will get worse before they get better."
