            News

            2020.08.24 - PUBLIC, PROFESSIONNEL

PUBLIC ADVISORY – TO EVERYONE WHO HAS ATTENDED LATIN DANCE EVENTS: GET TESTED FOR COVID-19

Dr. Myl?ne Drouin, Montr?al’s regional director of public health, is asking anyone who has attended indoor or outdoor Latin dance events since July 31st to get tested for COVID-19. Most of these events took place in Montr?al.

To date, 3 confirmed cases of COVID-19 attended one or several Latin dance events over the past few weeks. 2, of whom were contagious, attended events in Montr?al on the evenings of Friday, August 14 (St. Catherine street) and Saturday, August 15 (Fr?d?ric-Back park). Other Latin dance events, organised in Park Lafontaine and Verdun, could also be linked to the outbreak.

The call to get tested is even more important for people with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, loss of sense of smell, sore throat, headaches, muscle pain. Testing clinics in Montr?al have been notified and are ready to test people who participated in those events,” said Dr. Drouin.

The Montr?al’s regional public health department (DRSP) reminds the public that currently, indoor gatherings where people can dance are prohibited, since this type of activity presents a high risk of spreading COVID-19.
For outdoor dance events, the following preventive measures are essential and must be respected:
            • Don’t go to any event if you have symptoms.
            • Don’t go to any event if there is a risk that you have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19.
            • Wear a mask or face covering if the 2-metre distance is not respected, for instance, when people dance together.
            • Don’t change dance partners during the event or between one event and another. Ideally, dance only with a partner who lives at the same address as you.
            • Wash hands regularly, before, during and after the event.
            • Don’t sing or shout during these events.

The DRSP also reminds the public that confidentiality for all cases of COVID-19 is protected during investigations, especially when close contacts of confirmed cases are notified by public health. It is very important that everyone collaborate so contacts who must self-isolate can be informed, and that way we can stop transmission of the virus. This will reduce the risks of a second wave and protect the health of the population.

To see the list of COVID-19 testing clinics, go to santemontreal.qc.ca/coronavirus-en, or call 514-644-4545 to be referred to the right resource, from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Please note that the Services Qu?bec call center will be open on weekends from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting Saturday, August 29, for calls related to COVID-19. Outside service hours, call Info-Sant? 811.
Reminder of public health measures for the public:
            • Wear a face covering in public places.
            • Limit contacts as much as possible (maximum of 10 people from 3 households).
            • Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you don’t have access to soap and water.
            • Use hygiene measures when you cough or sneeze: cover your mouth and nose with your arm, throw your tissue away as soon as possible, and wash your hands immediately.
            • Respect physical distancing and stay at least 2 metres away from other people.

                  COVID-19

More than 80 students already on forced leave

CLARK / QUEBEC JOURNAL / QMI AGENCY
                  DAPHNE DION-VIENS
                  Monday, August 31, 2020 21:19
                  UPDATE Tuesday, September 1, 2020 11:45

Two other cases of COVID-19 have been reported in two elementary schools in Quebec, Les Pr?s-Verts and Jules-?mond, bringing to four the number of schools in the capital to be affected by the virus since the start of the school year.

About 20 elementary school students and 80 secondary school students are now on forced leave in Quebec.

Les Pr?s-Verts school is located in the Lebourgneuf sector and Jules-?mond school, in the Val-B?lair sector.

These two establishments are in addition to Polyvalente de Charlesbourg and Jean-de-Br?beuf secondary school, where positive cases were also reported on Sunday.

In these two establishments, approximately 80 students were placed in administrative segregation for 14 days. Students with the virus contracted the virus outside of school.

                  No outbreak

At the Polyvalente de Charlesbourg, the two cases are not linked, so we are not talking about an outbreak.

For their part, students with a "low" risk level may continue to attend school. The parents of these students are still advised to watch for the possible appearance of symptoms.

If a child develops symptoms, it is recommended to keep the child at home, notify the school administration and follow public health recommendations.

“We're going to hope we don't have an outbreak. But there are going to be cases like that that will register from time to time. It's almost unavoidable when the virus is circulating in the community, ”says Dr. Girard.

All people who come in the next few hours to be screened in connection with these cases will be prioritized, adds Dr. Girard.

“If you have symptoms, you are told not to go to school and to call to see if you could benefit from a test,” recalls Dr. Girard.

Regarding the three cases of students declared positive for COVID-19, the Regional Directorate of Public Health indicates that the isolation rules have all been observed.

                  Distance learning

In the two school service centers concerned, it is also ensured that distance education will continue for students who are on forced leave.

Computers or tablets will be distributed to students who do not have them at home, it is said.

The lessons will be given remotely by the usual teachers and according to the normal schedule. They will be given a work plan.

At the Quebec Region Education Union (SERQ), it is rather stated that confusion reigns in this area. "Who is going to do what?" It’s very confusing at the moment, ”says interim president Daniel Gauthier.

Schools had until September 15 to put in place an emergency protocol that provided for the measures to be put in place in the event of a class or school closure.

Education Minister Jean-Fran?ois Roberge has promised that schools will be able to "switch" to distance learning within 24 hours if a class or school is closed.

122 new cases of COVID-19 in Quebec and two more deaths

A quarter of the new cases of COVID-19 unveiled on Tuesday come from Quebec. A karaoke bar under the microscope.

                    Radio-Canada
                    11:40 a.m.

Quebec today reported 122 new cases of COVID-19, an opportunity for the Minister of Health, Christian Dub? to warn the population again.

Two new deaths were recorded between August 25 and 30. The death toll is now 5,762.

The number of people hospitalized was 110 on Monday, two less than the day before. Of these, 20 people were in intensive care, two more than the day before.

The number of samples taken on Sunday for screening purposes amounted to 10,510, or below the government target. A total of 1,673,913 samples have been taken so far. (The number of samples is announced 24 hours after the other data.)

                    Regional distribution

It is in the Capitale-Nationale that we have recorded the most new cases (+31, for a total of 2,093 since the start of the pandemic). This represents a quarter of the new cases identified on Monday.

Remember that four schools in the Quebec City region are affected by COVID-19 and that around 20 customers of a bar in the city have also been infected.

In Montreal, there are now 29,863 cases since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 22 from the previous day.

Estrie is also hit by an upsurge in the pandemic. On Saturday, 17 new cases were recorded, bringing the total to 1267. There were also 9338 (+16) in Mont?r?gie and ten in Mauricie-Center-du-Qu?bec (2149).

The number of new cases has also exceeded ten in the Outaouais (844, +12). In Lanaudi?re (4858, +3), the situation seems to be stabilizing, as in Laval (6307, +8). However, in the latter, a student at Odyssey for Youth high school was removed from the classroom after testing positive for COVID-19.

In the Laurentians, six new cases were recorded (4,243), and one in Gasp?sie-?les-de-la-Madeleine (213).

The number of cases remained at 377 in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

Québec a fait état aujourd'hui de 122 nouveaux cas de COVID-19, l'occasion pour le ministre de la Santé, Christian Dubé d'avertir de nouveau la population.

                    • VPS is reporting 2-3 deaths in children aged 2-17 in Quebec. You have to dig into the data a bit but there was an ICU case under 2 who was discharged and 2 of 3 pediatric ICU workers discharged out of a total of 10 pediatric ICU cases. The deaths appear to have occurred in April/May but are just now being reported.

VPS COVID-19 dashboard showing North American Pediatric Intensive Care Units.

This has not been reported officially in Canadian data and has not been picked up by the media. We have just over 10,000 pediatric cases in Canada with 1 death so adding 2-3 deaths to that total would be a big deal, especially given that all the cases reported in VPS had either normal or mild comorbidities.

The Chaudi?re-Appalaches Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS-CA) has confirmed that a resident of the CHSLD Saint-Alexandre in Thetford Mines has tested positive for COVID-19. Two other accommodation areas in the city are also affected.

A hairdresser with COVID-19 caused infections in these three residences. The CISSS-CA was able to identify 15 close contacts and the screening tests are positive for three of them. These were placed in a hot zone, also called red, at the CHSLD Saint-Alexandre. This sector is intended to accommodate people declared positive for COVID-19.

“All the preventive and safety measures necessary to protect the health of residents and workers are in place. All CHSLD residents and staff quickly underwent a screening test and the results will be known over the next few days, ”indicates the CISSS-CA in its September 9 report.

Bas-Saint-Laurent fears an explosion in COVID-19 cases

At least a dozen infected people attended student parties

                            DOMINIQUE LELI?VRE

                            UPDATE Wednesday, September 9, 2020 10:52 PM

Benefiting so far from an enviable situation, Bas-Saint-Laurent now fears an explosion in COVID-19 cases as a dozen people have received a positive diagnosis after participating in student parties, including one would have brought together more than 100 people.

Positive individuals took part in various private events between August 30 and September 6 in the Kamouraska region. Some of them would have presented there even if they started to feel symptoms of the coronavirus; they could not have "resisted" the invitation extended to them.

With these new cases, the Bas-Saint-Laurent health region presented its worst results on Wednesday since the start of the pandemic. However, the regional director of public health of Bas-Saint-Laurent, Dr. Sylvain Leduc, believes that this is perhaps only the "tip of the iceberg", since not all the revelers could be. tested again.

"Many cases will be added, we fear," he declared, in an interview with Le Journal , recalling that in Quebec, a banal evening of karaoke in a bar in the lower town, in the month of August alone infected 72 people, in addition to forcing students in some schools to self-isolate.

A party "which had no place to be"

The positive cases are mainly young adults attending C?gep de La Pocati?re and the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire. The celebrations were organized "spontaneously", without these establishments being consulted.

The most important occurred on August 30 and would have gathered, according to testimonies, more than a hundred people in a residence of La Pocati?re, in flagrant violation of the prohibition to make private gatherings of more than 10 people and 3 households.

“My job is to protect vulnerable people in Bas-Saint-Laurent against COVID-19; people who have not asked to be exposed [to the coronavirus], but who will perhaps be by the force of circumstances, because they will have frequented a business where young people work and who had attended a party which had no place to be, ”lamented Dr. Sylvain Leduc.

                            Indiscipline

The CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent launches a broad call for screening, saying it is in an approach where it wants to promote "dialogue", and not repressive, in order to take the full measure of the situation and "limit the consequences"

All those who participated in these events are therefore invited to be tested, as are the clientele of bars in Kamouraska and Rivi?re-du-Loup, whom some positive cases have visited.

“There are people who may have been unruly. [...] We have a tangible example that it can happen here. It is important to contain this epidemic, ”insisted the mayor of La Pocati?re, Sylvain Hudon, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

The S?ret? du Qu?bec was not able to say, in the evening, whether it is investigating the event of August 30.

In the evening, the C?gep de La Pocati?re announced that due to the cases identified in the student community, and on the recommendation of Public Health, it was suspending until September 24 inclusively all educational and extracurricular activities offered on its campus. from La Pocati?re.

“Thus, all the courses will continue 100% in virtual. This situation will be reassessed on or around September 24, 2020, ”the C?gep said on its Facebook page.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
