The patient, a Montreal-area woman, had just returned from a trip to Iran Monday when she went to a medical clinic that evening because of “mild” symptoms, Quebec Health Minister Danielle McCann said. Her condition did not require hospitalization, but numerous reports said she was treated at Verdun Hospital before being released. McCann declined to give further details other than to say the woman flew via Doha and did not take public transit after her return.

Results of tests done Tuesday came back Thursday, Dr. Yves Jalbert, deputy head of Quebec’s public health protection agency, told reporters by phone from Quebec City.

Another analysis of the samples is required at the national microbiology laboratory in Winnipeg for official confirmation, McCann said. Results of that analysis will be known Sunday...

Quebec's public health authority announced a third probable case of the coronavirus COVID-19 late Thursday night, mere hours after the second case was confirmed.

Authorities say the infected person returned from a trip to France on Tuesday. After returning to Canada, they learned someone they had been in contact with in France had tested positive for the virus.

The person then called Quebec's Info-Sant? (811). The person followed their recommendation and self-quarantined at home before getting tested at a hospital in the Mont?r?gie region, near Montreal.

New case of COVID-19 - Reminder of the measures to be taken after returning from a trip abroad

                    Quebec, March 8, 2020

In the context of the school break which is coming to an end and due to the progression of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the world, the public health authorities of Quebec would like to recall the measures to be taken for people who have returned from their trip to outside of Canada.

Note also that another probable case has been detected in Quebec. The infected person, who has returned from a cruise, was taken care of in the Mont?r?gie because of his symptoms. The collection of information regarding his movements is still in progress.

When returning from a stay abroad, it is important that travelers pay attention to their state of health. COVID-19 compatible symptoms such as fever, cough and difficulty breathing are asked to be monitored for 14 days from the date of return to Canada. In the event of the onset of these symptoms, the first action to take is to contact Info-Sant? 811. A nurse will assess the situation, send the appropriate instructions and indicate the precautions to be taken if a medical consultation is required.

Remember that measures are taken at international airports to identify any traveler returning to Canada who may be suffering from COVID-19 and to make travelers aware of what to do if symptoms appear.

As of today, only travelers from the province of Hubei in China and Iran are invited to isolate themselves voluntarily upon return. For destinations like Mainland China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan and Singapore, the current guideline is to watch for symptoms for 14 days and avoid places where it is impossible to separate easily from others if these symptoms appear. In certain situations, regional public health departments may be called upon to issue a recommendation for voluntary isolation following the analysis of concomitant factors likely to pose a possible health risk. Otherwise,

For future trips, the risk for Canadian travelers abroad varies by destination. The Public Health Agency of Canada has categorized the risk of international travel according to four levels. It recommends that citizens avoid all non-essential travel to high-risk countries or areas (level 3) and avoid any travel to those presenting an extreme risk level (level 4).

                    Quote:

“All travelers should be informed of the health precautions they should take when traveling. When they return, it is essential that they be on the lookout for all the signs affecting their state of health. In order to ensure their well-being as well as the protection of their entourage and the community, they are asked to promptly report to Info-Sant? 811 the appearance of symptoms compatible with COVID-19. "

Yves Jalbert, Deputy Director General of Public Health Protection

                    Highlights:

It is always recommended to put into practice, in order to prevent most infections, the following instructions:
                    • Wash your hands often with warm running water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
                    • Use an alcohol-based disinfectant if access to water and soap is not possible.
                    • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
                    • Immediately throw away the tissues used in the trash and wash your hands afterwards.
                    • Avoid visiting people in hospitals or long-term care homes within 14 days of returning from a foreign country or if you are sick.
                    • Avoid direct contact for greetings, such as handshakes, and favor the use of alternative practices.
                    ...

                      Situation in Quebec

In Quebec, as of March 8, 2020, the situation is as follows:
                      • 2 confirmed cases
                      • 2 probable cases
                      • 10 people under investigation
                      • 340 negative analyzes (cases reversed)

For probable cases, another analysis must be carried out by the National Microbiology Laboratory in order to obtain official confirmation. The number of negative analyzes now includes the number of reports that were rejected as they did not meet the definition of COVID-19. The number of people under investigation is explained by the increase in the number of countries for which an analysis for COVID-19 is recommended.
