A resident and a worker at a retirement home in West Vancouver have both tested positive for COVID-19, marking the spread of the novel coronavirus to a second care home in British Columbia.

The new cases come as several major events were cancelled across British Columbia, while local officials and service providers say they have preparedness plans in place even as the risk of transmission remains low.

Dr. Rhonda Collins, chief medical officer for owner-operator Revera Living, says the cases were confirmed at the Hollyburn House today.

Collins says in a statement the resident of the care unit has been isolated and is receiving treatment, while the employee is now at home in self-isolation.

She says Revera has implemented full pandemic protocols across its Canadian operations and began active screening at its British Columbia locations this past weekend.

The two new cases bring the provincial total to at least 48 and follow a provincial announcement on Wednesday of enhanced screening at long-term facilities across after six health-care workers and two residents at Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver were diagnosed with the virus...

...There’s an outbreak at a second long-term care home in West Vancouver, the Revera Hollyburn House Retirement Residence, Dr. Henry said. A man in his 90s who lives there tested positive for COVID-19, as did two health care workers.

The two staff also worked at the Lynn Valley Care Centre, where BC’s first local outbreak of COVID-19 occurred.

There’s also been another case of community transmission, Dr. Henry said. A man in his 50s is sick with the virus, and officials can’t trace his case to travel or contact with another known COVID-19 case.

The final three new cases are all linked to travel. A couple in their 40s got sick after a Nile River cruise in Egypt, and a man contracted the virus while travelling in the UK....

Three administrative staff members at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver have tested positive for COVID-19, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) confirmed Friday.

The health authority said the employees are recovering in self-isolation at home. A statement said the staffers have not worked in clinical areas at the hospital, which is the fourth-busiest hospital in the province.

VCH said health officials are still investigating the source of the transmission and following up with other staff who may have been in contact with the affected colleagues...

B.C. has 11 new cases of COVID-19 in the province, bringing the province’s total to 64, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Friday.

The total number of cases in the province is now at 64, including one death. Six people have recovered with two consecutive negative tests.

The new cases include an outbreak at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. Three administrative staff members have tested positive for the novel coronavirus there.

“They are not people who had patient contact and measures have been taken at LGH to make sure that everything can be done as safely as possible there,” Henry told a news conference Friday.

One new case is linked to the Lynn Valley Care Centre, a long-term care home where the first provincial outbreak is located. Five new cases are related to travel in Egypt, the Philippines, Mexico, and Iran.

Two other cases are under investigation.

All new cases announced Friday are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region...

9 new coronavirus cases announced in B.C., majority at North Vancouver care home

British Columbia has announced nine new cases of novel coronavirus in the province, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 73.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the majority of the cases announced Saturday are related to the outbreak at the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver, where four residents and 12 staff members have now tested positive for COVID-19...

...Henry said another new case is in the Interior Health area, marking the region’s second case. She said that case is still presumptive, but added it is expected to be confirmed.

She said that case is related to travel to “a number of places within Europe,” most recently Portugal.

Another one of the new cases is in the Fraser Health region.

The second Vancouver-area care home under an outbreak protocol, Hollyburn House in West Vancouver, continues to have just one resident and one staff member testing positive. Henry said earlier reports of a second Hollyburn House staff member testing positive was actually a staffer associated with the Lynn Valley Care Centre...

Joint statement on B.C.’s COVID-19 response and latest updates

Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, and Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s provincial health officer, have issued the following joint statement regarding updates on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) response in British Columbia:

"We are deeply saddened to announce that three people who had tested positive for COVID-19 have recently passed away, all of whom were residents of the Lynn Valley Care Home. We offer our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones and the staff who cared for them during this difficult time.

“We are also announcing 30 new cases of COVID-19 for a total of 103 cases in British Columbia. The individuals are in the Vancouver Coastal, Fraser, Interior and Island health regions and were confirmed positive, based on BC Centre for Disease Control testing.

“Six people confirmed positive are in acute care, five have fully recovered and all others are self-isolating at home.

“A significant number of new cases are related to the Pacific Dental Conference 2020 held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on March 6 and 7, 2020. We are asking anyone who attended to self-isolate until March 22, 2020.

“Today, we are taking a number of additional steps to address the changing situation in B.C. and ensure our health-care system is best positioned to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“British Columbia’s health authorities are directed to immediately move all hospitals in the province to Outbreak Response Phase 2. This means hospitals will undertake only urgent and emergency procedures and will postpone all non-urgent scheduled surgeries. Hospitals will review operating-room capacity daily to prioritize urgent and emergency cases.

“Lions Gate Hospital in the Vancouver Coastal Health region is directed to move to Outbreak Response Phase 3. This means the hospital will accept only emergency patients. Lions Gate Hospital is also preparing to open a dedicated COVID-19 unit to provide care to those with the virus.

“These measures will assist hospitals to redeploy and train essential service health-care providers on critical care related to COVID-19 to ensure sufficient medical supplies for patients and staff who need them most, and to further increase capacity to respond to the potential for a surge of COVID-19 patients requiring acute care.

“We have worked with the College of Pharmacists to advise pharmacies to provide patients with a prescription refill or an emergency supply of their medications if needed. This will give physicians more time to care for patients with acute care needs. British Columbians are asked to respect this temporary arrangement and are reminded that there is no need to stockpile medication.

“To further enhance the availability of physicians for all British Columbians, the Province will provide physicians compensation for providing virtual-care services. We have also requested all health regulators to begin emergency registration of non-practising or retired health-care professionals, including professionals from other jurisdictions and the armed forces.

“Further, we are moving to restrict visitors in long-term care to essential visits only. Essential visits include compassionate visits for end-of-life care and visits that support care plans for residents based on resident and family needs, for example, families who routinely visit to provide assistance with feeding or mobility.

“In an effort to allow 811 health-care professionals to support more people who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or who require assistance with other health issues, the Province has created a dedicated phone service to provide British Columbians non-medical information about COVID-19. This includes the latest information on travel recommendations and social distancing, as well as access to support and resources from the provincial and federal governments.

“British Columbians can reach service representatives seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., by calling 1 888 COVID19. Information is available in more than 110 languages.

“We have also taken additional action to enhance social distancing and limit transmission. These efforts are not forever, but they are important for now.

“We are issuing a new order prohibiting all public gatherings of more than 50 people. This includes indoor and outdoor sporting events, conferences, meetings, religious gatherings and other similar events.

“On the recommendation of the provincial health officer, the attorney general, minister responsible for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, has ordered all casinos to close until further notice to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This order came into effect 11:59 a.m. today.

“We are also consulting with education stakeholders on potential recommendations for school operations following spring break.”

A Nanaimo physician says Vancouver Island could be hit harder than Italy if the number of coronavirus cases gets out of hand here.

Dr. David Forrest, an infectious diseases specialist and physician at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, turned to social media this week to plead with the public to help control the spread of the coronavirus to prevent COVID-19 cases from “overpowering” the medical system.

In a video message, more than seven minutes long and circulated on social media Monday, Forrest said that Vancouver Island has far fewer ICU ventilator beds than what are available to populations in the rest of the Western world. If the medical system on the Island becomes overwhelmed, he said, “some of you will get very sick and some of you will die. It may be your mother, your grandfather, your best friend, your child.”....
