Brazil had 656 deaths registered due to the new coronavirus in 24 hours and has more than 1.6 million confirmed cases, points out the survey made by the consortium of press vehicles based on data from the state health departments on Monday ( 6). There are 65,556 deaths caused by Covid-19 in the country in total. See the data, consolidated at 20h:
65,556 deaths; there were 64,900 until 8 pm this Sunday (5); a difference of 656 deaths.
1,626,071 confirmed cases; there were 1,604,585 infected until Sunday night, that is, there was an increase of 21,486 infected.
Before this assessment, the consortium released two partial bulletins, at 8 am and 1 pm. In the afternoon bulletin, the country reached 1,613,351 confirmed cases and 65,120 deaths. Earlier, with the data made available at 8 am, Brazil had 64,909 deaths and 1,604,683 confirmed cases.
The country is the 2nd with the highest number of deaths and infections in the world, behind only the United States: according to data from the American university Johns Hopkins, Brazil has 12% of deaths and 14% of cases on the planet.
Consortium of press vehicles
Data on coronavirus cases and deaths in Brazil were obtained after an unprecedented partnership between G1, O Globo, Extra, O Estado de S.Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo and UOL, which started to work since June 8 , collaboratively to gather the necessary information in the 26 states and the Federal District.
The goal is for Brazilians to be able to know how the evolution and the total number of deaths caused by Covid-19 is, in addition to the consolidated numbers of tested cases with positive results for the new coronavirus.
The partnership between the media was made in response to the Jair Bolsonaro government's decision to restrict access to data on the Covid-19 pandemic. Personalities from the political and legal world, together with entities representing professionals and the press, praised the initiative.
Changes made by the Ministry of Health to the publication of its pandemic balance sheet reduced for a few days the quantity and quality of the data. First, the disclosure time, which was at 5 pm in the administration of Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta (until April 17), passed to 7 pm and then to 10 pm. This made it difficult or impossible to publish the data on news and printed media. "There is no more story in the Jornal Nacional," said President Jair Bolsonaro, in a mocking tone, when commenting on the change.
The second change was of a qualitative nature. The portal on which the ministry reports the death toll was contaminated on the night of June 4. When he returned, after more than 19 hours, he started to present only information about “new” cases, that is, registered on the same day. The consolidated figures and history of the disease have disappeared since its inception. Links to data downloads in table format were also eliminated from the website, which are essential for the analysis of researchers and journalists, and which fed other dissemination initiatives.
Among the items that are no longer published are: curve of new cases by date of notification and by epidemiological week; cases accumulated by notification date and epidemiological week; deaths by notification date and epidemiological week; and accumulated deaths by notification date and epidemiological week.
On June 7, the government announced that it would re-inform its balance sheets about the disease. But it showed conflicting numbers, released within a few hours.
Only on June 9, the ministry returned to release the complete data, obeying the STF order.
On Monday (6), the agency released a new balance sheet. According to the folder, there were 620 new deaths and 20,229 new cases, totaling 65,487 deaths and 1,623,289 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
