A Belarusian woman from Vitebsk was reported as the second suspected case of coronavirus in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry.

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – A Belarusian woman from Vitebsk was reported as the second suspected case of coronavirus in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry.

“According to the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, one of the test samples taken from this woman revealed an RNA fragment that might be attributed to the novel coronavirus,” the press service informed.

The Belarusian national and two of her co-workers returned from Italy. As they were on a brief trip to the northern part of Italy, they were asked to come to a healthcare facility for tests. The patients were taken off to Vitebsk Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital. “As of today, all three of them are in satisfactory condition and show no symptoms of disease. In-depth laboratory tests are conducted on the affected patient. Two of her colleagues tested negative for the coronavirus,” the press service noted.

Three cases of COVID-19 coronavirus confirmed in Belarus

Minsk, March 2 (Prensa Latina) The Belarusian health authorities today confirmed the existence of three cases with the coronavirus COVID-19, according to laboratory tests, the results of which will be sent to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Deputy Minister of Health and head of epidemiological surveillance, Natalia Zhukova, said that, after testing in more than one laboratory, it was decided to send the samples to WHO to finally confirm the existence of new coronavirus cases, he explained.

Zhukova noted that two of the cases were registered in this capital. This is an Iranian student and her friend's father, while the third case is of a Belarusian from the city of Vitevsk, who returned from a trip to Italy.

The three patients have no visible symptoms of the disease, but their laboratory tests were positive, so there is a high probability of confirming them as cases of COVID-19, the official said.

On his side, the WHO representative, Beat Berdiklichev, said that the situation in this nation is normal.

Possible cases of infection are sought and at this time 271 people are examined to rule out the existence of the aforementioned virus and another 247 have already been discharged, obtaining negative results, he said.

There is no need for excessive restrictions, Natalya Zhukova said. The ministry is not going to suggest border closure.

A reminder, Belarus confirmed six coronavirus cases on 4 March. They were reported in Minsk (four cases) and Vitebsk (two cases). All these cases were identified during medical screenings. Two of them returned to Belarus from affected areas. Not only the confirmed cases were isolated, but also the people who came in close contact with them.

MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – The Belarusian Healthcare Ministry has substantiated its coronavirus containment measures in its Telegram channel, BelTA has learned.

According to the Healthcare Ministry, it is doubtful that the decision to shut down the Belarusian border could reliably prevent the import of coronavirus into the country. No country that closed its borders has banned the entry for its citizens, and this is usually the most common way of importing the infection. “Seven out of eight imported coronavirus cases in Belarus were Belarusian nationals returning from abroad,” the ministry informed.

The decision to close kindergartens and elementary schools makes more sense over other viral infections which are usually on the rise in this time of the year. “After closing pre-school and school facilities, the children whose parents have a job, will unlikely be at home alone. They are more likely to be taken care of their grandparents. Meanwhile, the virus is known to be most dangerous to elderly people who have the biggest risk of developing severe complications of viral infections (influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, measles and pneumonia),” the Healthcare Ministry underlined.

The ministry also opposes suspending classes at higher learning institutions, vocational colleges and high school. There is no guarantee that young people will stop closely communicating with each other.

All in all, the ministry reiterates that the most important thing is a responsible attitude of people to their own health and the health of surrounding people coupled with safety measures recommended to people who return from abroad, and hygiene etiquette. For example, one should no way conceal the fact of visiting at-risk countries and areas and avoid quarantine stations. Nevertheless, not all people demonstrate responsible behavior.

“All the patients are in satisfactory condition except for one who sought medical assistance too late. His condition can be classified as moderate. Some of the patients have already been discharged, some will be discharged soon. The others remain under medical observation, but their condition does not give reasons to worry,” the Healthcare Ministry noted.

The ministry emphasized that several hundred people in Belarus are now receiving treatment for pneumonia, however only one of them developed pneumonia as a result of coronavirus. “Sixty four people with pneumonia are in severe condition, however none of them has COVID-19. Thirty four patients are mechanically ventilated – none of them has coronavirus either. By the way, the patient who was reported dead by some media yesterday is alive and is getting better and he does not have coronavirus either,” the Healthcare Ministry said

The President of Belarus has put forward the idea that drinking vodka ever day and using the sauna will help to keep coronavirus at bay.

Alexander Lukashenko seems so unconcerned about the Covid-19 outbreak that he took part in an ice hockey game at the weekend, while football fans attended stadiums for games as usual, Sky News reports.

It's reported that little has been put in place to help stop the spread of coronavirus in Belarus, where there have been 94 cases of Covid-19 so far.

And President Lukashenko emphasized his attitude to the disease when he took to the ice for a game of ice hockey on Saturday - declaring that sport "is the best anti-virus remedy".
