    Novel coronavirus alert

    There has been a fifth confirmed case of novel coronavirus in Queensland.

    The 37 year old woman, a Chinese national, is currently isolated in the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH).

    The woman is travelling in the same tour group as the previously confirmed cases – a 44 year old man, a 42 year old woman, a 37 year old man and an 8 year old boy.

    All five people who have been confirmed to have novel coronavirus are stable.

    The four others from the same tour group remain in isolation in GCUH.

      Summary

      This is the first epidemiological report of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) acute respiratory disease infections reported in Australia at 19:00 Australian Eastern Daylight Time [AEDT] 1 February 2020. It includes data on Australian cases notified during the week 26 January to 1 February 2020 and in the previous week (19 to 25 January 2020), the international situation and current information on the severity, transmission and spread of the 2019-nCoV infection.

      In Australia:

      • A total of twelve cases of 2019-nCoV infection were notified up until 1 February 2020;

      • All twelve cases reported a travel history to China, and 92% (11/12) had a travel history to Wuhan, Hubei Province, China;

      • The majority of cases (92%, 11/12) developed mild to moderate symptoms, with one case (8%, 1/12) admitted to intensive care;

      • Zero deaths were reported; and

      • Two days elapsed since the onset of illness in the latest confirmed case and the date of this report.

        As at 05:45 hrs on 11 February 2020, we have confirmed 15 cases of novel coronavirus in Australia:
        • 5 in Queensland
        • 4 in New South Wales
        • 4 in Victoria
        • 2 in South Australia

        5 people have recovered. The others are in a stable condition

        All of the cases in Australia have come from Wuhan except one in NSW who had contact in China with a confirmed case in Wuhan.

          Two cruise ship evacuees contract virus

          Two people evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan to an Australian quarantine centre have contracted coronavirus, and more cases are possible.

          A 24-year-old woman from South Australia will be transferred to Royal Adelaide Hospital on Friday. The other patient is from Western Australia.

          Both remain well and are being housed in a separate isolation unit at Howard Springs outside Darwin...

            • 5 in Queensland
            • 4 in New South Wales
            • 4 in Victoria
            • 2 in South Australia

            There are also 6 cases associated with the Diamond Princess repatriation flight from Japan.
            • 1 is a resident of Western Australia
            • 1 is a resident of South Australia
            • 2 are residents of Queensland
            • 2 are residents of Victoria

            The people from Western Australia and South Australia with confirmed cases returned to their home state on 21 February 2020. The people from Queensland and Victoria with confirmed cases will return to their home states today.

            10 of the earlier cases are reported to have recovered.

                  Gold Coast beautician in isolation after contracting coronavirus

                  A 63-year-old beautician on the Gold Coast is in isolation after testing positive to the coronavirus COVID-19.

                  The woman began feeling unwell at work on Thursday after returning from Iran, where the disease has reached epidemic levels.

                  She is currently being treated at the Gold Coast University Hospital...

                    Fifth virus case in NSW after Iran travel

                    A man who recently travelled to Iran has become the fifth person in NSW to be diagnosed with the coronavirus.
                    The male in his 40s arrived in Sydney from Iran on February 22 and didn't develop symptoms of COVID-19 until two days later.
                    He was tested on February 28 and was confirmed to have COVID-19 on Saturday, NSW Health said in a statement on Sunday.
                    The man has relatively minor symptoms and has been taken to Westmead Hospital...

                      The first Australian death from the lethal coronavirus outbreak has been confirmed, after a man died in a Perth hospital overnight.

                      Australia has recorded its first coronavirus fatality after a man confirmed as COVID-19 positive died in a Perth hospital overnight.

                      The as yet unnamed coronavirus victim was a 78-year-old from the infected cruise ship Diamond Princess who died in the early hours of Sunday morning at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

                      He had been taken from a Darwin quarantine camp with his wife, who is also infected, after being isolated in a quarantine camp there from Japan.

                      The couple were two of 164 Australians who were quarantined aboard the Diamond Princess with coronavirus then flown from Japan to Darwin and placed in isolation at the Howards Springs camp.

                      The dead man’s wife is now in isolation at a Perth hospital...

                        Sixth COVID-19 case after woman returns from Iran

                        NSW Health has confirmed a sixth case of COVID-19 in a woman who recently returned from Iran and is urging anyone who may have been on the same flight to seek immediate health assessment if symptoms develop within 14 days.

                        The woman in her 50s had been in Iran and flew back to Sydney via Qatar, arriving on Sunday 23 February on Qatar Airways Flight QR 908. She developed symptoms the following day, and was tested for COVID on 29 February after presenting to a hospital emergency department.

                        Anyone on Qatar Airways flight QR908 from Qatar to Sydney that was scheduled to arrive at 6.45pm on Sunday 23 February should be on the alert for symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. If symptoms develop, people who were on that flight should isolate themselves straight away and contact their GP or local emergency department.

                        This latest case is not linked to, and was not on the same flight, as the fifth confirmed case who has also returned from Iran but on a different day...

                            Ninth Victorian case of coronavirus confirmed by health officials

                            Passengers who sat near a coronavirus-infected woman on a flight to Melbourne may not be contacted with health concerns for several more days.

                            Delays in the processing of a flight manifests between federal and state departments mean Victorian health authorities still do not know the identity of dozens of people who may have been in close contact with an infected woman.

                            The woman, in her 30s, has been confirmed as Melbourne’s ninth coronavirus patient after flying into the airport on Friday.

                            She recently returned home from Tehran in Iran and was on flight Malindo Air OD177 from Kuala Lumpur to Denpasar then Melbourne, arriving at 6.04am on Friday, February 28...

                            ...Until the flight manifest is obtained, Victorian health authorities are urging anybody who travelled on Malindo Air on flight number OD177 and landed in Melbourne on 28 February at 6.04am to contact them for further guidance.

                            Hospital staff considered the woman clinically well enough to be discharged, and she is now isolated at home, health minister Jenny Mikakos confirmed...

                              Nine cases of COVID-19 confirmed in NSW

                              NSW Health now has nine confirmed cases since the outbreak of COVID-19 began,with three new cases confirmed yesterday by Health Minister Brad Hazzard andChief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant.

                              Dr Chant urged people to ensure they are aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 and seek immediate health assessment if symptoms develop, if they have returned fromcountries at risk including mainland China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan,Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Cambodia.

                              “One case recently travelled from Iran, and one was in close contact with anothercase who had travelled from Iran. The third case hadn’t travelled internationally inrecent weeks,” Dr Chant said.

                              The first new case, an adult male in his 30s, has been diagnosed with COVID-19following recent travel from Iran. The man has had relatively mild symptoms, afterarriving in Sydney from Iran via Malaysia on Saturday (29 February 2020). Hedeveloped symptoms and was tested at a local hospital.

                              He is being isolated in hospital after test results confirmed a positive result forCOVID-19

                              The second new case, a woman in her 40s, is a close relative of the fifth confirmedcase, a man who recently returned from Iran. She had been awaiting test results inhospital isolation.

                              The third new case is a man in his 50s. The man, a health care worker, is currentlybeing treated in Sydney’s Westmead Hospital and was tested after developingrespiratory symptoms. He has not travelled to any high risk countries in recentweeks.

                              This health care worker was not treating patients at Westmead as incorrectlyreported by some media outlets...

                                Tenth coronavirus case confirmed in Qld

                                A tenth Queensland coronavirus case has been confirmed by state health authorities.

                                A 20-year-old man from China has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

                                The man, who had travelled to Dubai for at least two weeks before entering Australia, is in a stable condition in isolation in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

                                He was living in the Brisbane suburb of Toowong with a male housemate, who is now being assessed for the disease.

                                There are reports the man may be a university student, but authorities are yet to confirm this.

                                Meanwhile, a student accommodation business told AAP Chinese students are bypassing the China travel ban by spending two weeks in other countries before entering Australia...
