MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australian troops will begin on Saturday taking citizens returning from overseas to compulsory quarantine places to prevent spread of the coronavirus, as Victoria officials closed beaches on a warm autumn day amid public resistance, warning of fines.

The compulsory self-isolation for travellers in hotels and other lodgings across Australia comes as the country gradually tightens its social distancing rules, which have so far confused many.

With temperatures reaching 28 Celsius (82F) on Friday, hundreds of people in the state of Victoria defied pleas to stay home and flocked the beaches, forcing the police to close them on Saturday.

While Australia shut down mass gathering venues, closed many businesses and introduced the mandatory 14-day quarantine for those returning from abroad, there is no national order to stay home, although the government has said that those who can must stay inside...

...Victoria, where about a quarter of Australia's 25.5-million population lives, saw its largest daily increase of coronavirus cases of 111 on Saturday, bringing the total in the state to 685 cases. As of late Friday, there were 3,166 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, with 13 deaths related to the virus. ..

Covid-19 coronavirus: Australia announces 'radical' new restrictions

Australians have been told tonight not to go out in public with more than one other person while all public spaces including parks, playgrounds, skateparks and outside gyms will be closed from midday tomorrow in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic...

...There are now 3981 confirmed cases across the country. That includes 1791 in New South Wales, 769 in Victoria, 656 in Queensland, 299 in South Australia, 312 in Western Australia, 62 in Tasmania, 77 in the Australian Capital Territory and 15 in the Northern Territory.

The national coronavirus death toll hit 20 on Wednesday after a 95-year-old female resident at the Dorothy Henderson Lodge in New South Wales succumbed to the virus.

Four other deaths have been linked to the aged care home which was one of the first places to report the virus...

Cruise ships ordered out of Qld waters

There'll be more COVID-19 testing in Qld, with 32 of the state's cases having an unknown source.
All cruise ships anchored in Queensland waters will leave by Wednesday as the state continues to crack down on movements to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Nine cruise ships had been off the coast and the four that now remain have been ordered to leave Queensland waters by one minute before midnight on Wednesday.

The total number of diagnoses in Queensland has reached 934 with an additional 13 cases overnight.

Of the current cases, 42 people had been hospitalised and 11 are in intensive care on ventilation.


Health Minister Steven Miles says four of Queensland's five fatalities from the coronavirus were from people who had been on cruise ships.

Passengers account for 119 cases of the virus in Queensland and a further six people have caught the virus from them.

"We need to stop these cruise ships coming into Queensland and bringing the virus with them," Mr Miles said.

Among Queensland's 13 new cases was an infectious diseases nurse from the Princess Alexandra Hospital who is now isolating.

The nurse was working with COVID-19 patients when she reported feeling unwell.

Queensland Health stated she had followed all procedures including staying home as soon as symptoms emerged.

Six staff members who came in contact with the nurse will also self-isolate for 14 days.

The death of a 62-year-old woman is a reminder that the “nasty” coronavirus does not discriminate between its victims, Premier Steven Marshall says, as it’s revealed five more people have been diagnosed.

An Adelaide woman who had been a passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship died in the early hours of Wednesday in the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s intensive care unit.

• Over the past week, there has been an average of 89 new cases reported each day. Of the newly reported cases, the majority have been from NSW, followed by Vic.
• Cases of COVID-19 were reported across all ages.
  • The median age of all cases is 47 years (range: 0 to 100 years).
  • The median age of deaths is 79 years (range: 55 to 94 years).
• There is a relatively equal ratio of male-to-female cases across most age groups.
• The daily rate of increase in COVID-19 cases has fallen over the past fortnight, with the rate of increase in the past 24 hours being less than 1%, compared with 9% observed in the 24 hours a fortnight ago.
• Of cases with a reported place of acquisition, more than 65% have recent international travel history, including more than 1,200 cases associated with cruise ships. It is likely the proportion of imported cases will reduce over the coming weeks as a result of the border restrictions imposed.
• The overall proportion of cases under investigation in each state and territory is relatively low, indicating that public health actions, including case identification and contact tracing, is occurring in a timely manner.
• To date, more than 353,000 tests have been conducted nationally. Of those tests conducted around 2% have been positive.
