Coronavirus 'getting very serious' in NSW
            23 March 2020

The NSW premier has urged the public to take personal responsibility to slow the spread of coronavirus, with police on standby if people fail to comply with the social distancing rules.

Gladys Berejiklian on Monday implored people to understand the seriousness of the COVID-19 outbreak after social distancing rules on the weekend were widely ignored.

"This is getting very serious and our actions have to match how serious this is," Ms Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

Her comments come as the number of COVID-19 cases in NSW jumped to 669 as of 8pm on Sunday - increasing by 136 cases in 24 hours...

              • Ruby Princess cruise passenger becomes Australia's eighth coronavirus death

A woman in her 70s has become the eighth person to die after contracting COVID-19 in Australia.

A passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship has become Australia's eighth coronavirus fatality after testing positive to the disease last week.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was one of the first passengers from the cruise ship to be diagnosed after it docked in Sydney on Thursday, New South Wales health authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

There have since been 107 confirmed COVID-19 cases in NSW from the ship and a further 26 interstate.

There have been extensive concerns raised over why passengers were allowed to disembark the ship at Sydney Harbour despite some showing symptoms of COVID-19.

But NSW authorities have repeatedly insisted that proper precautions were taken to monitor those on board after the ship became one of four given an exemption to land after the government introduced a country-wide 30-day ban on foreign cruises.

The Ruby Princess had 1,148 crew and 2,647 passengers on board when it travelled to New Zealand before returning to Sydney Harbour, but NSW chief medical officer Kerry Chant said the ship was deemed "low risk" because it only travelled between New Zealand and Australia.

All those aboard the ship were asked to self-isolate for 14 days once positive cases were confirmed as part of heightened measures to contain the virus....

A day after passengers left the ship four cases had been identified - that has now jumped to a total of 133 positive tests.

Australian COVID-19 death toll rises to 11 as Victoria reports first fatalities
                          Updated 16 minutes ago

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has revealed that two men being treated for COVID-19 died overnight, becoming the state's first coronavirus fatalities and bringing the national total to 11.

Professor Sutton told radio station 3AW that "tragically" two men in their 70s had died overnight.

"They're our first deaths," he said.

"But in a sense they're not unexpected. We're now up to 520 cases, so two deaths amongst 500 is relatively small looking at the global figures."...
