The retired couple in their 50s were admitted to hospital on Thursday, after returning from a trip to Italy via Hong Kong along with their two sons. One son was sent to quarantine on Saturday, before the second son, who showed no symptoms, tested positive for the virus overnight.

“We will change our policy of examination by checking close relatives of the infected even if they do not show any symptoms of the disease,” Chen said.

The number of newly diagnosed patients with new coronary pneumonia in Taiwan has increased to 18, and the first cases have no obvious symptoms

        Xinhua News Agency 2020-02-10 05:30:57

The Taiwan Epidemic Epidemic Command Center held a press conference on the 9th to announce that Taiwan has added a new confirmed case of new coronavirus pneumonia, and the total number of patients has now increased to 18. This is the first case in Taiwan that has no obvious symptoms but high levels of virus in the body.

The person in charge of the Taiwan Epidemic Epidemic Command Center said the new case was the youngest son of a couple who had recently been diagnosed with the new coronavirus pneumonia. The family of four transferred from Hong Kong to Italy for travel on January 22, and returned to Taiwan from Hong Kong on February 1. First, the husband was notified of fever and pneumonia, and the wife was notified for the cold symptoms. The couple was diagnosed on February 6 and the eldest son was diagnosed on the 8th.

During the epidemic investigation, the epidemic prevention officers found that although the youngest son had no symptoms, because the three family members of his companion had been diagnosed one after another, it was determined that they might be exposed to the same source of infection. Therefore, even if the inspection conditions were not met, the epidemic prevention officers still took the initiative to conduct inspections. The diagnosis of new coronavirus is positive, and the amount of virus in the body is quite high. It may be just that no symptoms have appeared and whether it is infectious is unknown.

The person in charge of the epidemic command center said that because the family of four was "free walking" and there were no other close contacts, there were currently 78 people in a family of four contacts. According to current regulations, close contacts of confirmed cases will be quarantined at home for 14 days. Once fever, upper respiratory tract and other symptoms occur, they will be sent to the doctor for quarantine notification. However, the first case of asymptomatic infection in Taiwan occurred, and the amount of virus in the body was found to be comparable. Therefore, the consideration of expanding the scope of collection and inspection may lead to a rapid increase in the number of confirmed cases.

At present, the expert meeting of the health authorities of the Taiwan authorities is discussing. In the future, as long as the close contacts of confirmed cases are to be examined, they will no longer be checked for symptoms.

The person in charge of the epidemic command center said that there are currently 18 confirmed cases in Taiwan, of which the first has been released from quarantine. In other cases, the vital signs were comprehensive and stable, no oxygen was used in the hospital, breathing was normal, and they were still in hospital isolation. At present, there are 6 people who were negative in the latest collection and hope to recover gradually.

After a 61-year old taxi driver succumbed to the disease on Sunday (Feb. 16), a survey of people he had been in close contact revealed that his mother, who is in her 80s, had sought medical treatment after developing symptoms on Feb. 6. The 22nd confirmed case, the deceased man's nephew-in-law, experienced a fever and a cough between Jan. 28 and Feb. 6.

Because the 22nd case did not usually closely interact with his relatives, doctors believe he contracted the case while spending time with the family during the Lunar New Year. The taxi driver's brother also tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), but he was asymptomatic...
